    Overheating Machine!

Pros: Cheap price, RAM and SSD are easy upgrades, and the 5600M runs games quite well. Cons: The Dell G5 comes with a lot of bloatware (the easiest method to get rid of it is reinstalling a fresh copy of windows), Driver updates are a nightmare, and this laptop overheats, so you are going to need a cooling pad if you plan to use this laptop for anything other than productivity and very light gaming. Although I like this laptop, I cannot recommend it to others.

An inexpensive option for start-up crypto miners!

I bought these Dell G5 laptops specifically to crypto mine etherium. The Radeon 5600m 6GB gets around 34/mh while the laptop uses around 200-Watts of electricity total. A pretty decent mining setup for the price. They do work well for this purpose! 1. The laptops are definitely budget builds, but the plastic used is sturdy and doesnt easily scratch. Very thick. 2. The laptops are easy to do maintenance on. The bottom comes off easily using standard philips head screwdrivers. The cooling setup also comes off easily, which makes replacing the thermal paste and thermal pads simple. 3. Dell support has actually been easy to work with when using the laptop's 1 year warranty. Hit up their support chat, provide the product ID number, and they send you a box with paid shipping. I've received all of laptops back within a month and working normally. My biggest concern with this laptop is the cooling. 1. The Dell G5 come with a metal mesh sticker over the ventilation holes on the bottom. They absolutely restrict cooling performance. I removed the mesh stickers and now the laptop pushes a decent amount of air through the radiator. 2. I've had to replace a fan or two after 6 months of use. Not a big deal, but something to consider if youre running these 24/7. Can also send into Dell for a warranty fix. 3. You cannot manually set the fan speeds using the provided Dell software. You're stuck with the default fan curve or a 'G' performance mode with the fans cranked. 4. You cannot easily change the memory or GPU core speeds on this AMD 5600m like you can on NVIDIA based laptop GPUs. At least not on Windows 10 and using the provided vBios. Would be helpful for tuning and getting temps down. Overall, still usable for mining! Definitely needs some love to work, but the Dell G5 is capable!

First off this computer will restart randomly (and this is a known issue with almost all of these computers)… updating drivers and all that jazz does nothing… it WILL happen to you I promise! This was horrendously worse on battery life.. we’re talking minutes! This computer has so many issue that dell actively keeps making worse and worse… Dell keeps updating the bios that makes the performance worse and worse on this computer… like look at the subreddit for this computer and there literally posts telling people to avoid certain bios updates at all costs… and literal hour long guides on how to set this Pc up to work ok and even then it’ll still randomly restart on you.. Seriously save yourself the headaches and don’t buy this computer.. even below MSRP! I also had issues updating the AMD drivers and had graphics issues in games.. I’ll post pictures!

The Pros: I read several negative reviews about this laptop, but I wanted a full AMD laptop. The system performs exceedingly well in gaming. I averaged 85 FPS in Warzone at max settings. Cons: For the price, the system should of had more ram and better storage. Storage is very important for a gaming laptop. I believe a 120hz panel would have been a plus as well, but the 60hz panel performs well. The laptop does get hot, but that is common for AMD. The cooling system in the laptop does a good job and isn't terribly loud. I would recommend adding a second NVME drive for storage and 16gb of 3200mhz ram. You can usually find a god deal on newegg or ebay. I would recommend Gskill ram for the upgrade.

Pros: -excellent value -pleasing, understated design -Ryzen 5 4600H is a highly rated CPU -Radeon RX 5600M is will suited for 1080p gaming on new titles at high settings -good quality screen -Dell support website is actually useful for getting updates -Dell BIOS update is easy -storage and RAM can be upgraded -two M.2 storage slots (no need to reinstall Windows to add storage) -battery is replacable -fast PCIe storage -useful variety of data and video ports -Windows 11 compatible (but I am sticking with Windows 10 for now) Cons: -256gb is a little low for a gaming laptop -getting into the computer is a bit of an annoying process, which involves removing 10 screws and prying off the plastic bottom -screen looks a little washed out at certain viewing angles -keyboard is tough to read when the red LEDs are off -switching the keyboard lighting to always on required changing BIOS settings

Good laptop, games run fine, thermals are a pain

Used it for gaming and software development, ran pretty well. Thermals are a pain, activating high performance mode helps (a lot). You may or may not face some sound driver issues (the latest driver as of May 3 does not work, you want to manually use the version before). There's a subreddit dedicated to this line of laptop, they have great tips. But like the title says, it runs fast, games run smoothly with good graphics, but you'll feel the heat on the keyboard (if you don't activate turbo mode) Also it comes with bloat, remove all except the Dell software, those are useful.

Overall a great product. It does get really hot as other reviewers . Fans are quite loud when they get going. Out of the box you will have to update the bios and drivers otherwise it will not perform as it is supposed to but once you do that its good to go. If you are willing to adjust settings you should have no problems with this laptop, as usual with AMD powered devices you tend to get a decent product that needs some love out of the box. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark on highest preset I averaged 75 fps. My results in games are as high as what I have seen from reviews of rtx2060 laptops which was surprising considering every review I have read put it under it and more in line with an gtx1660ti.

When you purchase this laptop you will need to update the bios first on the dell website. Once you've updated the bios then download the latest drivers. You will need to go to your radeon drivers go to graphics and use GPU 2 if you don't follow these instructions you will have your games freeze or your computer will shutdown due to bugs. The drivers I've listed below. https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/servicetag/0-WU9PUlA3L0RSS0w0ek9WMWVIMWpYZz090/drivers This is a great laptop for gaming. The display is more crisp than my 2017 Alienware R4. The graphics is pretty close to the 1070 max q and is between the 1660ti and 2060 with updated software 9/17/2020. Its a great laptop for the price. The red keyboard is decent, its not a msi steel series keyboard. It will take some time to adjust. The boot speed is super fast. Upgrades: You have an additional SSD M.2 slot on this laptop. I suggest using it for 256gb will go fast while utilizing this for games. You could put a regular SSD in here or a hard drive however you will need to purchase the ribbon for it through dell. You can only use one or the other because they take up the same space as far as upgrades. I hope this helps its a great laptop just update everything and match your settings to your needs. Dell: I highly suggest testing laptops better. Im a bit disappointed with the drivers however you did fix it but not everyone is computer literate. I've never had problem with dell before this is a first and I've had MANY dell laptops of all kinds. This laptop will make you happy. This display is great it bleeds very slightly with dark background but if your playing games or surfing the web you wont even notice it.

Out of the box this computer is very fast and easy to use I would recommend adding another hard drive if you are going to be using it for any type of gaming as the 256gigs goes really fast There are two m.2 SSD slots and a normal 2.5 HHD slot the first m.2 has the 256gig in it For a laptop this is very open to upgrades I have installed a 1tb m.2 and I will be upgrading the RAM next Over all I am pleased with my purchase but I would definitely recommend a bigger hard drive

If youre able to find this open box around $550 its worth it for a 6 Core + 6GB GPU Laptop in 2021/2022. Has an additional M.2 slot but no room for a 2.5'' HDD/SSD. Gets pretty hot, would recommend a laptop cooler.

Runs super quickly for games, though it does require a lot of updates initially both on dell's side and amd's side. If you complete these though, it runs very well. The fans do not seem ridiculously loud to me, but I'm used to using them in a room that also has a fan or AC unit. It's not whisper quiet. It's not super hot but it's probably better to use it with some type of cooling pad. The fan placement does leave some to be desired. I would also upgrade the ram but it doesn't seem to be all that necessary for gaming on current AAA games above 60 FPS. Some which play remarkably above that. Overall, it's a great quality for the price.

Solid budget gaming laptop. Like others have noted, it does run a bit hot. However, I have now had this laptop for 9 months and noticed none of the other concerns. When gaming, I place it on a lap-desk that has holes, and it keeps the temps lower. If you place it directly on a flat surface, it will overheat. Aside from that, this is the best bang for your buck laptop that will play any game you want to throw at it. As long as you don't seriously multi-task, 8gb should be fine. I would recommend throwing another hard drive in the extra m2 port and upgrading to 16gb RAM if you want to invest another $100 into it. Do that and you'll have a nice mid-range machine instead of budget.

Great laptop. I got my son this and it has no problems playing any of the games he wants to play or run any of the engines he uses to create with. Easy to upgrade ram and storage but will only take a nvme storage. I couldn’t find a way to use his old ssd. Battery also looks to be easily upgraded if you need to. I’m not a huge fan of dell products but this one has been great and all amd.. more bang for the buck. Also, my son hasn’t complained about the bloatwear slowing things down or creating any other types of issues. Overall it’s been a great laptop for what he does with it.

Nice laptop with good features for the price. Shipping took longer than promised. Expected to pick up same day as it showed it was in stock but none in store. Too much bloatware taking up space. Laptop pauses too often for no apparent reason when surfing the internet or checking email. Otherwise it performs well for everyday minimal work. Have not tried it as a gaming machine yet but will try soon and update the review. Maybe a clean install would fix some of the issues. All available updates were performed.

great laptop, runs all games well, need to do some post-box additions like add ssd (make sure dell gives you an extra screw its a unique size and geek squad cant add the ssd without it- you will have to buy one from dell or have the old ssd outright replaced) does run warm, make sure the first thing you do is open the drivers and bios w/ dell and update it, certainly helps. kill the alienware and killer software when you get it set up, itll help w/ performance

Works pretty well. I play games on it plus use programs such as photoshop and illustrator and it doesnt slow or anything. Only complaint is that it can get pretty hot, especially if its on your lap or a soft, cloth surface such as a couch or a bed. One of the few.. I mean very few all AMD laptops. this G5 15 SE utilizes AMD CPU and GPU also it supports AMD's Smartshift tech, meaning it distributes power between the CPU and GPU. Laptop have a silver pearlescent finish to it a bit on the chunky side, exterior is mostly plastic, but its fairly sturdy. Although my complaint with it's exterior is how fairly sharp the lip or edges of its panels are, which kind of triggers my product designer side. It have two cooling fans, and plenty of vents, which is good since its AMD parts runs hotter than intel laptops. It offers a decent amount of ports. The display is 1080 60hz, brightness level of 220nits which not bad since I don't plan on playing too much on this laptop.. I have my desktop for that, or using it outdoors or by a window. I wanted this one more for productivity and movies, and maybe some gaming on the go lol! So full sized chiclet keyboard with number pad, and good size touch pad is great! The bottom firing stereo speakers are loud. As for performance it can handle most games fairly well with the combination of Ryzen 5 and RX5600M. Granted it have proper ventilation or in cold room and proper set up like with a laptop cooling pad, you could play games for long period without having it getting too hot. Some warnings to those who wants to buy this. If you're not the type to tinker or you don't have the patience you will have a hard time with this one, because it comes with stability issues, but if you are its a great value of a laptop. Out of the box you definitely have to update every driver I mean all especially the BIOS through windows, Dell update, and Dell Support Assist. Also it took me some time to tinker with alienware command center to get the right power usage, and fan speed when I need it at certain times. Bottom line its a great laptop for the price I got it for and I am very happy with it!

The laptop is extremely fast, I had purchased it for school and it was able to keep up with me having multiple tabs open. The laptop is also easy to setup, the only thing is that the setup took around 3 hours because it looks for updates through windows, according to Google this is about the normal set up time for this laptop but if you have faster wifi it may take less time. Anyways, the laptop itself is pretty fast, icons load quickly, sometimes I would accidentally open up two web browsers at once with how quick it works. I’m used to having to double tap to make the internet browser pop up, but with this laptop I didn’t have to. However, although this laptop is pretty amazing, the one I had received ended up being a dud. This is nobodies fault at all, which is why I still give this laptop 5 stars. The battery ended up going out randomly, the laptop wouldn’t turn on, or charge. I was just unlucky but that doesn’t mean this laptop isn’t worth purchasing. While I was using it it really was a great laptop and I was sad when it stopped working.
