Look No Further - Portable Document Scanner

As the saying goes, "looks can be deceiving," and this was surely the case of the Epson Workforce ES-300W Document Scanner. Upon first glance, I was thought the unit was too small and not powerful enough to scan the plethora of business documents I seem to accrue day in and day out. After five days of use, I found the unit to be responsive, fast, and most of all, useful. It has a whisper sound and the document feeding was exacting. Unboxing was easy - compartmentalized with the cable, USB cord and instructions readily available. The manual was straightforward and had a detailed setup process. The unit was standalone and there was no need to attach or detach any items - it was truly convertible. The front latch allowed for the unit to be opened easily and for the feeding mechanism to be unfurled. The URL to download the software/drivers was clear. Initially, I had trouble with the Wi-Fi connection, but after using the USB cable, I was able to circumvent this snafu. The Epson Capture Pro software had a user-friendly interface that made it very simple to navigate when scanning and naming documents with selected file formats. The instructions also clearly stated to place documents with the printed side facing down. I had scanned numerous items in the past few days, including a 33-page report in one sitting. The Epson Workforce ES-300W scanned through it with effortless ease and in less than 75 seconds! The text was crisp, bold, and there was a nice border surrounding each page. The unit is portable – which is a nice touch especially since I am frequently on the go. Most importantly, this scanner affords me the flexibility to upload documents in the cloud for easy reference and organization. * This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

Wonderful portable scanner for those on the go

I was truly amazed at the compactness of the Epson WorkForce ES-300W. I was a little skeptical about it, thinking it would be bulky and hard to use. Quite the opposite! It is roughly the width of my Yeti cup and slightly taller. It also fits at the bottom of my computer case, along with my computer. How convenient is that? You can plug it in, use the USB cable or battery. The scanner is easy to open and folds out at the touch of a button. The top lifts up and the paper guide slides open easily. The edge guide slides out to accommodate various sizes of paper. It also has a special area made for business cards with just a switch of a button. If you toggle the button to the left, it will accept business cards. If you toggle the button to the right it will accommodate paper of various sizes. The other thing I really like about this scanner is that you do not even need an electrical outlet. I can use the USB cable that runs from the scanner to my laptop and scan documents in my car. The wireless feature is wonderful too. It was easy to download and install the free Epson app to my phone. I was surprised at how quiet the scanner is and how fast it actually scans. The quality of the scanned documents is very clear. I also love the fact that you can create searchable PDF’s. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. The opinions were unbiased and a reflection of my true experiences using this scanner. I work from my car and on the go quite a bit and this has really helped me in my line of work.

Compact and fast scanner. Love it but with 1 complaint - the scanner does not detect the paper on the feeder. You have to force the paper in or fold the end of the paper in such a way so the scanner can detect the paper.

It’s the when connected part. No instructions. And hard to follow web site left me sitting with this scanner for a few hours not connected. I’m still not sure if it’s connected correctly. That being said. I’ve used the es300 for weeks now and it’s fast and feeds paper well. I read the other reviews and for the money this portable wireless battery operated scanner is worth having.

I really love this wireless scanner. It makes it so easy to set it on the kitchen table using the internal battery and my iPad. I usually scan in all of the documents to be scanned and then later I will save the documents to the desired file location in the iCloud with the desired file name. This machine feels solid and is very fast. It is great to be untethered from a desktop and again the internal battery means no need to keep moving the power cord to the work location. I highly recommend this scanner!

Batt. powered and portable scanner; so-so software

This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. To provide some background, I own a lot of computer equipment, flash my routers' firmware, build my own servers, have owned many scanners, both Epson and Canon; in few words, I'm fluent in tech. The scanner is pretty obvious to unpack and open up. I quickly downloaded the software from the Epson site facing the same, usual dread I always encounter with scanners: it installed many pieces of software on your computer and I was left to ponder whether I did really need those to operate the scanner. For a Mac, it was Document Capture, Epson Scan 2, EpsonNet Config, EPSON Software Updater, Epson Scan 2 Utility, User Guide and Uninstaller, and - optional - also ABBYY FineReader Sprint and Presto! BizCard 7. I hardly used the quick install guide, just when in doubt making sure it was on USB mode rather than Wi-Fi, and opted to experiment quickly with over the wire config. Scanning pages in AFD (autofeed document) mode was really fast using Document Capture. There was no jam and scan quality was more than sufficient even at low res. You can trigger the start of the scan on either scanner or comp side, or by inserting pages. It was also very easy to create scanning configs that automatically uploaded the doc to the Cloud (Good Drive in my case but there are other possibilities). It is worth mentioning though that Cloud uploads require your comp to be up as a temporary scan is first created on your comp, then uploaded, and then removed (I believe this is configurable if you want to retain a local copy). Going wireless was a bit of a pain. I started in wired mode with the intent to set the wireless config, and then go wireless. Well it does not work that way and embarrassingly I had to read the manual. You first place the scanner in AP mode, set your comp to connect to the scanner's Wi-Fi, use then EpsonNet Config to configure the wireless, switch the scanner to Wi-Fi mode, reconnect your comp to your Wi-Fi, and then are able to discover your scanner. One comment about the manual: instructions were laid out over multiple pages. Somehow, I open the manual from one of the apps which directed to a web page. No need to tell you I was unable to read the next page when connected to the scanner's Wi-Fi :-(. Another thing you need to be aware of is you need to use a different software, Epson Scan 2, when scanning in wireless mode; Document Capture just does not work. Another thing you need to be aware of is that such a small scanner does not have any display. It means you do not have the ability to select a destination computer for scan over Wi-Fi like you could on much larger scanners. This means that not only your comp is up and running, but Epson Scan 2 is also ready. Unlike on USB mode, you need to trigger the scan from within Epson Scan 2. I intend on creating a small virtual machine with the Epson software and driver loaded, have Epson Scan 2 up and running there, and have the house guest connect to it for them to scan docs as needed to a common Cloud account. It will prevent them to have to install the all software package and config everything, meanwhile they’ll benefit of the scanner portability. It I was to summarize my impressions of the Epson ES-300W scanner, I'd say the following. The scanner is solid, simple, battery operated, and can go wireless, thus portable. It is a bit bigger than I'd wished for to bring on a trip and scan my expense receipts while traveling. It scans quickly and the output documents exhibit the same solid quality Epson has got us used to. I just dislike the software and this for few reasons: 1) I don’t understand why config and utilization is not available under one roof, 2) I don’t understand why I have to deal with 2 similar yet different scanning software packages depending on usage mode (USB or Wi-Fi), 3) the overall design and UX is way, way dated and it shows. In fairness, I think it is the plight of many scanner manufacturers; maybe they all OEM the software from the same shop.

This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. The ES-300W scanner is a real gem, and is perfect for at home or on the go. It's fairly light-weight and compact, and scans lightning fast. If there's one negative mark against this product, it's the setup. I first tried to set up the scanner via my aging desktop computer. I ran through the setup program fine until the point that it asks how you want to connect. I chose the manual wireless setup option as I don't have WPS on my wireless, and at that point it wan't able to continue due to the install erring out. I decided to then use the supplied USB cable, and that allowed me to complete the setup. Once that completed, I tried to scan a document, but when selecting the scanner it would close out the program. Frustrated with that, I tried the setup on my laptop via the USB cable and the setup went without a hitch, so there may have been an issue computer related with my desktop install attempt. Next, I wanted to try and get the scanner on my wireless. To do that, I had to connect direct via wireless, run the EpsonNet Config program, and configure the device with my wireless network settings. At the end of the day, that whole process was a little tedious and potentially daunting for the non-technically minded. With the installation out of the way, I gave it a test run of 15 pages. I was shocked at how fast it scans, and the quality was great to boot. It scans way faster than my Workforce all-in-one flatbed. In the time it takes to scan one document on the flatbed, I could easily pump out 10+ pages on the ES-300W! As far as travel goes, it does fit easily into my backpack, and doesn't add too much weight. When closed up, it folds into a nice little package that's easy to carry around. What's also really great is that it has a really small footprint. Also, the battery seems to last a good long time, though I don't have exact numbers. I have got a good week out of use without having to charge it just by powering it off when not in use. Overall, minus the initial setup, this scanner has been excellent. It's so fast, I no longer use the flatbed scanner if I don't have to. The portability is excellent, and great for those on the go. I must say that I really do like this product and would highly recommend it it the potential setup snags don't scare you off.

The scanner comes with a power adapter, a USB cable and instruction materials. I downloaded the software from the url provided onto my windows 10 machine. There are two choices for installing the software - using the USB cable provided or through wireless. I chose the later. After installing the software, I was prompted to upgrade my firmware. This took a few minutes to complete. The software package comes with the Epson Scan 2 Utility (Used to provide statistics and key settings), Epson Scan 2 (Application used to perform scanning with advanced settings), Document Capture Pro (USed to perform advanced scanning with features to save the image to your computer, email, ftp, sharepoint, evernote, google drive or SugarSync. This also comes with multiple file formats and different type of page detections). There is also a mobile application available for iOS and Andriod devices. This allows you to scan to your mobile device. I primary used the Epson Scan 2 application. I used it to scan a stack of old photos. The part I was impressed about the most was the quality and speed of the scan. I chose to save all the photos in PNG format on my drive. I really like the scanner due to how compact it is and how great all the photos turned out. The only thing I wish it were able to do is scan things that do not bend - right now everything has to be passed through the feeder. This means I would not be able to scan my passport for example. If this is indeed possible, please let me know. I also used the android mobile application to scan a few photos after installing it from the play store. It was able to easily find the already setup scanner on my wifi network and prompted me through the options to scan documents. I see room for improvement in the instruction manual. I wish the instruction manual had a separate sheet for each language rather than combining them together. It makes it easier to read. I also would like to see more details in the documentation about the different type of download options. The documentation simply has a url to go to but the site had multiple downloads. This will be confusing to the average user. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

Full disclosure: This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. Now that we got that bit out of the way, let's talk about this great portable scanner. I travel for work and visit many trade shows and meet with many customers and prospects. If you're in the sales biz or are a decision maker in your organization, you know that your pockets are full of business cards and your briefcase is full of collateral after a day at the trade show or conference. I've tried many different apps and other portable solutions for card scanning that were either slow, tempermental when connecting with my laptop, or had poor quality scans. I'm happy to say that those dark days are behind us with the Epson ES-300W. Not only does it scan in varying DPI that you choose, but it does single pass duplex scanning and does it very quickly. I was quite surprised the 1st time I scanned some docs how quickly it was complete. Business cards are scanned quickly and also in full duplex. I was also able to scan receipts for my expense reports quickly and easily. The scanner can be connected either via USB or wifi. It has an internal battery that lasts for over a day (by my testing) and can also draw power via USB. I usually connect up via USB while at the booth and leave the power brick in the hotel room for sustained scanning sessions. If you need a fast and capable duplex scanner, the Epson ES-300W won't steer you wrong.

I've worked with a lot of different brands of hardware and it seems that epson has out done themselves with this gem. I was super impressed with the speed of scanning, quality of the scan, and simplicity of the unit. It's definitely compact and makes life easy for anyone who is traveling or limited on space. Anyone who travels and has to scan and send in papers on the road this is perfect. The battery life is exceptional. I charged it when I received the unit and have put more than a couple 100 sheets through the unit. Truth be told, I expected another run of the mill scanners that were just going to be "okay". This by far exceeds my expectations between the mobility and other features. I used it with both my android phone and my windows 10 laptop over wifi and was impress with the connectivity over wireless since it's commonly an issue with other devices. Without a shadow of a doubt, hands down, this has been the best scanner I have ever owned. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs portability, simplicity, and/or a compact scanner. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. Even because of that fact above I was really impressed with it's performance. I have lots of paper to scan weekly and I spent hours doing that, espesially double sided papers. When I opened it I was like, well, this is small so it will be slow performer. For test I had about 100 double sided papers to scan. For my surprise it did it's job in no time. I could not even believe it! Quality is good as well. Only thing that I did not like is since it very fast it some times scan papers in the angel. not straight.. But having it done so fast you can re-do it few times. Overall I like everything the rest. Set up was pretty easy. Same as un-boxing. So far I'm really happy with this unit. Personally speaking, I suggest you to try first before buying. I would probably never spend $300 on it, thinking it will be just about average scanner but now I would do it in no time after I saw it at work.

Power packed in a small package

This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review Power packed in a small package – I have never used a portable scanner and was not really sure what to expect when the small package arrived at my doorstep. The scanner is well designed and compact. A really small footprint - 11 inches wide (same as the width of a US letter sized paper), 2.5 inches tall and about 4 inches deep. Weighs about 2.5 - 3 pounds. As I said, a small and compact foot print. The scanner then just grows (sort of like the Transformers movie). The front opens up, a couple of blades/wings flip out to hold documents that need to be scanned. Not sure how much weight the feeder can hold. Plug in the charger which is similar to the little brick and cord use get with the typical laptop. That’s about what it takes to get it physically setup. To get the scanner connected and ready for use, you will need to download software from the Epson website (URL provided in the setup document is not quite right but it was easy to locate the right software on the Epson website). Would have been nice if the software was provided on a mini CD or a USB stick. There are quite a few applications that need to be downloaded and if you have a slow internet connection, it could take a few minutes. I chose to set it up on the home network via the Wifi option. Not quite the easiest setup process. For once, I had to crack open the user manual to figure out the process. After a few attempts at setting it up via a device on my wireless network, I ended up connecting it using the WPS option on my router. The WPS option worked out well and was quick. In hindsight, I would suggest that this is the best option and should be default option for everyone. Once the software is installed, I was prompted to do a firmware upgrade which I accepted. The firmware upgrade process appeared to have hung up after the update was completed. I waited about 5 – 10 minutes before I manually shut down the printer and restarted it. I was worried that I would end up with a dead scanner since the firmware did not exit gracefully. But it worked out. Now for the actual usage. I started the Epson app and selected the defaults to perform my first scan – black and white scan of a US Letter sized document. The scanner spit it out at such a high speed that I thought something was wrong. But that was not the case. Indeed, the speed of scanning is impressive. As the scan resolution is increased, the scanning speed is reduced but well within acceptable time of a few seconds per page. It certainly takes a few seconds to get the data to show up on the computer (note that I am on a Wifi connection). I think the delay is due to the wifi transfer of data from the scanner to the computer. Have to wonder Scan speed did not change much between a one side scan vs a duplex scan. Note that duplex scan is a single pass and does not require the document to be flipped over and scanned again. Good work on this design. Black and White scans took about the same time as color Scans – just a few seconds if that. I was able to scan up to 10 documents on a single pass. I just did not need to scan larger stacks and so cannot really speak to the upper limit of the document feeder. I did run into something that I need to sort out. A black and white scan came through fine for the most part except where I had a bar code in one part of the document. The scanned image of the bar code came out a bit smudged. The same document in color mode reproduced the bar code well without any issues. I played around with the resolution but the B&W image of the bar code did not come out right regardless of the resolution. I will need to play a bit more and see what I am doing wrong. After a few minutes of non-use, the device goes to sleep even when connected to power. Good green credentials, I say. Paper jams did happen once or twice and they were easily resolved. No complicated machines and elements to mess with. Just a latch to open the scanner and take out the original. The software however could not handle paper jams elegantly. Anytime I opened the device to clear a paper jam, I had to restart the app and I think this may be by design as the device disconnects the wireless connection and the application does not have a good way to pick up when reconnected. Hopefully, this part of the design can get improved in a future update. I did not scan any business cards – do folks still use business cards? A few documents I scanned seemed to get the bottom edges cut off. Repositioning and scanning them worked out well but cannot figure why the bottom edge seems to get cut off. I would certainly confirm the scanned output before scanning the next document. On a related note, the design of the scanner enables easy scanning of long documents. As regards the physical characteristics, I would suggest a gentle touch given the small footprint. I would worry about breaking the document guides and the paper holder flaps if I was not careful with them. What I would be curious to know is if this scanner can be used to scan large volume of documents/photographs/originals, etc.? Or if the design and specification is intended for low volume and infrequent use. I like it too much to burn it out by overuse! As regards pricing, I think it is a bit higher than what I would pay. Something around the range of $150 would seem to be optimal, IMO.

This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. I have owned several scanners in the past and this one has got to be one of the best. The size is perfect for easy portability and the wireless function allows you to scan whenever you are connected to wifi. You also always have the option of connecting via USB cable. Set up was very simple and the speed and quality of the scan was very very good. Downloading the software was painless and you have several ways to save scans including email, to your documents folder, or dropbox/google drive. Remember that in order to scan, pages must be face down and turned over. I highly recommend this scanner by Epson if you are looking for a compact scanner that doesn't skimp on quality, speed, ease of use, and a variety of ways to connect.
