The setup was as easy as plugging it in and.. Oh wait that's it. I plugged in the hdmi, then the power and it turned on. The Google Nexus player loads Netflix extremely fast vs some Blu ray players with slow interfaces. YouTube works great, in HD too. The Pandora app is flawless, and there are countless apps for things such as weather, games, news. The included remote has a built-in microphone for voice search. Just say what you want to see and it's there. If you want a smart TV but don't want to replace your old set, then this is a definite buy! I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and with Best Buy for providing excellent customer service and prices.

What can I say? I LOVE this thing! I am totally digging OTA HD tv by way of Antenna and streaming Netflix and Hulu on my Nexus Player. I will never go back to paying $120 for Satellite TV. The Nexus Player is fast, fluid and extremely smooth. No hick-ups, no issues. I actually bought another one for the bedroom. I bought a Roku 3 at first. Hated it. Very buggy. Would reset on its own. My Nexus Player has not crashed or given me a single issue since setting it up. I wish it had more internal storage memory, but a $12 OTG USB thumb drive took care of that. This little gem will not disappoint you if you are looking to jump off the high cost of pay cable / satellite tv.

The Nexus Player is Google's answer to Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV, and runs Android TV, a specialized version of Android for TVs and set-top boxes, and it delivers (for the most part) in all facets. The design of the actual device is pretty minimal, sporting the "hockey puck" aesthetic, with the ports somewhat hidden in the back and under the device, and the remote is fairly minimal as well, sporting only a few buttons. It's nothing too fancy to look at, but aesthetics weren't my concern when purchasing this over any of the competition. Out of the box, Android TV is pretty impressive, sporting a nice home screen already populated with several apps both by Google and third-party developers to get users right into enjoying content. Among these apps are Google Play Movies, Google Play Music, and YouTube, making it easy for people already getting movies, TV, and music through Google to dive right in. To extend the functionality of the Nexus Player, users can download apps from the Google Play Store, though not all apps are Android TV optimized, and therefore some apps may not be available to download to the Player. However, there are several great apps available in the Play Store, including Kodi (formerly XBMC) that can greatly expand the abilities of the Nexus Player and allow users to truly enjoy the benefits of Android TV over a Chromecast or another platform. Speaking of Chromecast, the Nexus Player is Cast Ready, meaning you can cast content from your phone, tablet, or computer to the Nexus Player through Google Cast where it's available. I've only had one big gripe with the Nexus Player, and that is that the Nexus Player seems to have an issue managing running apps. Some days I'll come to watch something in the YouTube app, and the app won't display any parts of the interface that are necessary to actually watch videos. Furthermore, it seems that Android TV doesn't kill apps in the same way as regular Android, as I'll see decent amounts of lag if I move from game to game which should be eliminated if Android TV kills apps that are no longer being used. So to conclude, it seems that Google may need to further refine Android TV as a product, which means the Nexus Player with the latest version of Android TV as of the writing of this review, less-savvy users may want to steer clear of this device, though if you can learn to restart the device, you'll be fine. Regardless of the aforementioned issues, the Nexus Player is a fairly nice device, and with the optional controller accessory, it's a great device for families that don't necessarily want to spend money on a game console and a set-top box.

THE GOOD The Google Nexus Player Android TV streaming box offers good conversational voice search from the included physical remote. If you use your smartphone or tablet to Cast compatible apps, it provides access to most important services. It delivers Android games to the big screen and is compatible with optional Bluetooth game controllers. THE BAD At launch, native app selection is abysmal compared with that of Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. The interface seems designed to push users toward Google's media services, and voice search doesn't yet include major third-party apps like Netflix or Hulu Plus. Connectivity is sparse, with no Ethernet connection, and the 8GB of storage is too small for avid gamers.

The sky is the limit for this style of android tv box, and for the price it's not much of a risk in picking one up. So far the app selection is limited, but that should improve as the platform matures. Youtube, hulu and Netflix work very smoothly, as does google music. It's almost worth the cost just for those apps. However I have had some freeze ups, and stuttering when it's running background processes the same time a processor intensive app is running. Having more than 1 gig of ram seems like it would have been a nice addition. When apps misbehave, force closing them through settings might be tough to figure out for the android novice. The platform is young, and I expect rapid growth, but for now it's like a Chromecast on steroids, with no need for a second device, and it has a lot of upside.

My logitech revue was getting long in the tooth and I had a $25 off card, so I picked this up for $50 after taxes. The good: Came preloaded with a lot of apps It's pretty fast, on wireless. I haven't had any video issues. It's small and doesn't use much power. It has a mini usb port. It would be better to have a full sized one. Installing Kodi was just a google play install. The remote is pretty good, but limited. Update to latest version worked well The bad: No optical audio out. Only HDMI. (see below for one solution) No wired ethernet port. (See below for one solution) Default installed apps, and recommendations all over the screen. I removed all the unwanted apps I could, and turned off recommendations. It has enough storage if you use someplace else for storing movies, music... The netflix app will deactivate your account (logs you out) if you are on autoplay next episode. You'll have to re-activate the account. (Netflix is supposedly working on this, it's on their end.) Things I've added to make it useful Kodi (I am getting close to cutting the cord.) My home theater only has hdmi passtthrough, so I bought an hdmi switch with optical audio out. I purchased a wireless backlit mini usb keyboard with touchpad so I could type on it. Purchased a mini B male to USB A female cable to hook up the usb wireless keyboard. I am considering a usb hub with ethernet since it's about 2 feet from my wireless router, I haven't had any wireless issues with it (yet). Other users have.

This device does a great job of giving you all the media you love from your phone on to the big screen, and then some. This device is running Google's latest Android Lollipop Operating System and it runs quite smoothly. However, there are a couple of limitations with this device. I am coming from Amazon's Fire TV to this device ( I switched because I love Google) and the Fire TV actually had 3 GB of RAM which I have come to miss with the Nexus Player. Also, the Nexus Player does not come with an on-board Ethernet port, so you will need to plug in a USB to Ethernet adapter to use Ethernet. There is only one USB port on this device, so if you want to use more than one USB device you could use a hub and plug in a keyboard & mouse, Ethernet adapter, or removable storage. If you do any modifying that requires more RAM you might find this is an annoying bottleneck that leaves you considering a different device.

The device as a whole is fast and speedy with the ability to stream from your mobile device which is the main reason i bought this one. I replaced a roku since i couldnt stream however the current list of compatible apps is a little lacking comparatively speaking. Once this is remedied then this will be the streaming device to beat.

I got this on sale for $50 so though I would give it a try. I am a fan of the Nexus line offered by Google so I figured this would be a decent product. Coming from Apple TV to this (better price point was a major reason) and looked to be more powerful than Chromecast. Interface is decent though not as customizable as Android or Apple TV so a little surprised there. The remote is almost laughable, it is cheap plastic and makes horrendous clicking noises when any button is pressed, however, it does get the job done and the built in mic works flawlessly from my use. Has most all the standard apps though nowhere near the growing apps of Apple TV or even Chromecast at this point. Comcast does not support this device so that may also be a factor for most people. HBO GO, Showtime, FX Now all will not activate if you have Comcast but will on Verizon FiOS. Player handles everything I throw at it. Gaming is mostly mediocre and needs to run on medium settings compared to the Nexus 9 tablet that runs on high. AC wireless streams very fast and 1080p looks sharp and does not buffer. Plex and Kodi apps are nice apps to stream local content. This has a large developer base and the home brew content is fairly decent if you are into tinkering and rooting your Android device. All-in-all if you are in Google's ecosystem this may be worth looking at as the price has dropped and it is a decent all around device. In most cases though the Chromecast is a even better price and has a lot more apps to choose from. If you are from the Apple ecosystem I would suggest sticking with that as this device will not be one to make you consider switching, or, give you a satisfied feeling if you do switch.

I have used almost every single streaming box available (smart TV's, smart blu-ray players, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, Roku 3, Chromecast, etc.) and Android TV has become my platform of choice. The performance is always great on these devices, and the interface is much more intuitive and good looking compared to options such as Roku. You have all your great streaming channels on Android TV (Netflix, Hulu, CinemaNow for Ultraviolet movies, etc.), except for Amazon Instant Video, which wasn't important to me considering it usually has similar content to Netflix. Wi-Fi performance is top notch via AC 5GHz Wi-Fi, videos starting almost instantly and I hardly ever saw buffering. The Nexus Player has improved considerably since released, and no longer is as buggy as many reviews would lead you to believe. If you have more money, I would get the NVIDIA Shield Android TV, which costs around $200 and is a considerably better product, but for only $50 at the time of this review, the Nexus Player is much better than a comparable Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, or Fire TV.

Just as the title says, very basic, but not a bad, Android TV device. It will work for most applications but I find the Shield is better for gaming. At less than $100 this device is a steal though.

I bought this for my girlfriend and she loves it. Detrimentally, or beneficially enough depending on your take, she has now been binge watching on a several shows she missed on regular cable tv. This streaming box was built by the book as it competes against other streaming devices such as Apple TV and Roku 3 and still delivers a powerful performance. Ease of use and and a user-friendly interface makes this device a good choice for anyone seeking a nice streaming box. Ideal for those seeking a casual viewing experience, as well as light app-based gaming.

Love this player. It's snappy, works great, has all the popular media formats, and works great with the Plex app for viewing my media library over the network in my house. But it suffers from a lack of great games, low storage size, and they don't seem to be making the game controller any more. Just feels like they gave up on it way too soon. Just be sure you buy it knowing that what it is capable of today is probably all it will be capable of in the future.

I bought the Nexus player to replace my chromecasts / amazon fire tvs that were on all my tv's. I mainly use this as a media/streaming player. I am connected to my 5Ghz band on my AC Router. The UI is nice and easy. Performance-wise, the Nexus Player buffers fast, content loads quickly, and there is hardly any lag. The best part is i don't have to have a separate chromecast / media player anymore! It's super convenient! The only gripe is the lack of buttons on the remote when compared to the amazon fire tv. (it lacks the ffwd, rew, and menu buttons) It's not a deal breaker, I still love this thing.

I used a Google Chromecast for the longest time, and loved it. I saw this on sale and figured it would be just as good as a Chromecast, with added functionality. So far, I've found most of the issues I have with it to be App related, not Chromecast related. Pros: - Can cast most everything just like Chromecast. - Smooth and quick interface. - Normal Google OS updates, which means very frequent patching/fixing. - Android TV constantly adding new Apps all the time. - Sleek yet small controller and unit. Cons: - No way of closing apps easily (like on a phone) without a hard reset. - Cannot cast Spotify from your phone, and HBO Go doesn't work for all cable providers (COUGH COMCAST COUGH). Again, app issues not the device issues. - Unlike the Chromecast, you cannot (yet) use your own photos as the backdrops during the sleep mode. It only uses the normal images from the internet. Overall, I'm going to keepusing it. I'll keep my Chromecast plugged in for emergencies (Spotify/HBO Go currently) but I love the remote interface, and the recommendations for videos you might like. And as all Google Products, much like wine, they just get better with time.

This was bought to replace a dying WD streaming box. I was worried that the lack of an Ethernet port would be an issue, but we stream Netflix & don't have any problems such as pixelization or pauses to buffer. My son chose it because it plays more video formats than other boxes. The USB port isn't for plugging in a memory stick or other storage, so he rooted it & installed Kodi to unlock that ability. You can even speak into the remote for searches etc. I understand that I can install a browser & have the web on my TV. I just need a BlueTooth mouse to navigate.

It is better than chromecast + fireTV stick for sure, haven't test the fireTV(the $99 one) as the direct competitor to the nexus player so that I have to go with nexus player as it is after all a nexus Android and not Amazon modified Android. Reasons for 3 stars only, because of some functions not working well or lost signal sometimes. Wish the storage was bigger as 8GB is really not enough and there's no SD card slot, and for the better use, you really needs a micro-usb to USB 2.0 adapter + a mouse. As navigating with the remote control wasn't that good especially when you browsing the net.( as I'm able to installed chrome and Google(now).

First, I'll admit, I am a Google guy, so I am already likely to prefer this to the other options out there. It's a great product, does everything you could ask of a TV box and does it all simply and well. The only downfall here is this device is kinda old now (2016) and lacks some of the latest tech, for me I'd like to see 4k support, and an ethernet port, hopefully in a updated version soon, but this device could be perfect for you if those things aren't needed. Actually I purchased a little USB to ethernet adapter to solve that problem so that can be done.
