Requires HP+ account, poor print quality

I was excited about this printer because of how small it is, but after two weeks I'm extremely disappointed by it and would return it if I was still in the Best Buy return period. Setting up the printer requires connecting it to wifi through the HP mobile app. No problem. It was my understanding however–from an official answer on the HP website itself (screenshot attached)–that opting in to the HP+ program, and consenting to always leave the printer connected to the internet/never use 3rd party cartridges, was optional. This appeared to be true in the first few days I had the printer: I went through the setup steps in the mobile app successfully, then when it prompted me to sign up for HP+ (without a Decline option), I was able to print so I just closed the app and moved on. The printer worked fine for the first 20 pages I printed, then stopped printing with an error stating I needed to complete the setup process. Well it turns out that in reality, completing the setup process is not actually possible without opting in to HP+, and without that opt-in the printer is now a $130 brick on my desk. I have no interest in promising HP I'll always leave this printer connected to the internet and always use their cartridges. My last HP printer lasted me nearly 20 years. Will the web service that this thing connects to for permission to operate even exist at that point? Probably not. Particularly frustratingly, I successfully printed some things right after setting it up, but didn't hit that 20 page threshold where it completely locked up until it was outside of the return window. On top of all of this, the print quality is pretty bad. I wasn't expecting perfection here, I recognized that with this model I was trading DPI for a smaller form factor. That said, I expect a laser printer to produce crisp text. This printer does not produce crisp text. Regardless of the source document, it produces strangely jagged/dithered text that looks significantly worse than a cheap inkjet. So here I am with a printer that produced 20 fuzzy pages before demanding my indefinite loyalty to HP before ever printing again, and I'm left wondering: why would I ever buy another HP product?

Didn't know you have to set up a printer with an ap o lication in order for to let you print. Would've known that I wouldn't had bought it. Pretty frustrating, specifically when you're on the go trying to print several jobs. Never again.

    Misleading and unreliable

HP has clearly decided to create this printer as a Trojan horse for a subscription service. What that's done is led them to develop sub-par software, an always-connected requirement, and a strong-arm subscription approach that renders the printer unusable without it. This is not disclosed when you purchase the unit. In terms of performance, HP's software is really bad. I've never found an IT troubleshooting problem I can't solve, but this one came close, as the wireless connectivity of the unit is finicky and it goes offline frequently, with the only recourse being physically resetting the unit. When I did get it to work, print jobs were substantially sub-par, with paper that was fed into the machine straight, coming out askew (text slanted on page). This is not user error; it is a problem with the feed mechanism in the printer. In short, not only is this going back on the second day, but it's caused me to place a moratorium for my company on all HP equipment.

The printer worked great for a month. Then it required me to install their spyware app on my pc or it completely disabled the printer. Total scam. But to make it worse their garbage website crashes and I cannot complete the app install if I want to. So I have a brand new completely working printer going in the trash because the company remotely disabled it. NEVER buy HP trash. From the review on the app it looks like you cannot ever uninstall the app either.

    Worst product and return procedure

I imagine they sell this low quality product to collage students, fully expecting the product to break in the short term and then they bank on the student being too busy with life to deal with the insane product return process of hoops to jump through to get a refund. Worst product I've ever purchased. Broke after a short period of time and then HP did everything in their power to not to honor the warranty. Ridiculous amount of obstruction to get them to take the printer back for a refund. I proved absolutely it was a manufacture defect. It took months of back and forth to get a shipping label to return the product. It felt very predatory, to be sold a product that breaks and then experience an almost impossible amount of friction to get ones money back. I'll never buy a HP product again.

Bought this printer not knowing that this printer requires a subscription to HP+ to continue printing after 6 months. True to form, 6 months after the purchase the error light lit up, and the printer won’t print! I tried purchasing another print cartridge, but that didn’t work. Looking over my event logs for my router I noticed a firmware update came from HP through the WiFi network on - You guessed it! The 6-month anniversary of purchase/setup. This printer is now a brick unless you “subscribe”. I am returning or exchanging this item tomorrow. VERY misleading business practice here !!

The printer works fine, HOWEVER, I did not like HP's heavy hand at forcing the customer to subscribe to HP+. My printer automatically disabled itself after 3 months of use b/c I did not sign up for the service! Really frustrating! I had to spend a lot of time to make it work again without HP+... I regret this purchase and will stay away from HP Printers as a result of this recent experience!

Never EVER buy an HP printer! I have 40 years experience using personal computers and printers. HP used to make good printers. Now, they cripple them with apps that force you to be connected to the internet so they can disable your ability to print even when you have plenty of toner left. Most of the time the printer won’t even connect to wifi. It is completely WORTHLESS! If you read this and still buy an HP printer, you deserve failure! Go with a Brother printer instead!

I would never have bought this if I had known I would be forced to have an account with HP allowing them access to my cloud. It won't print even without the wireless until I give up my privacy. Just sitting there on my desk wasting my money. Extortion of data

This is the worst printer I have ever bought. Does not connect to wifi, slow to print and overall not functional. I know price is your issue if you are looking at this however, you are seriously wasting your money. Do not do it and stop lying to yourself and looking for a good review to tell yourself it is ok. This printer is completely useless.

I loved the printer until I had wifi issues and could no longer print with it either using wifi or a cable. HP phone and chat support were unable to solve the problem, including closing out an ongoing support case without telling me. I exchanged it with a Canon printer with far more helpful support, including information that likely would have solved the problem I had with HP wifi.

This printer is worthless and I do not recommend. I haven't even had this printer for a year. I have been trying for hours to resolve the blinking "!" and have gotten nowhere! I even called HP and was told that I need to separate my wifi so the printer could connect to the 2.4 ghz, which I did and still no fix. The HP website is less than helpful. I will be buying a new (non HP printer) today.

Really horrible design! As each page prints, it curls back and goes directly into the feeder. If you're not standing over it to grab each page as it prints, it will print over the same page multiple times. Also, Instant Ink is a total scam! It started sending me cartridges after printing just eight pages and requires constant connection to the internet and if you try to use the cartridge after cancelling the subscription, the ink won't work.

    Forced internet and HP toner

Did not even get to finish the installation of the printer setup. Downloaded the install software. Connected the printer to my network. Gave HP my email and all of my personal information. Got to the last page of the setup and get a notice from HP that you must agree to only use HP replacement toner for the life of the printer. If you use any toner other than HP the printer will be disabled and you will no longer be able to use it. It is my printer. I paid for it. I can use it however I choose to. They also force you to agree to always have the printer connected to the internet. If you disconnect it from the internet the printer will be disabled and you will no longer be able to use it. Why does it need to be connected to the internet? What is it that HP is monitoring and collecting? Does every file and document printed get uploaded to HP? You can not finish the install until you have agreed to these terms. If these terms were expressed before the sale I would not even considered buying the printer. Had to spend an hour+ trying to figure out how to reset the factory setting to remove my personal information off of the printer before returning it. Never buy another HP product.

Purchased bc it's so small and doesn't take up much space, plus it's wireless so that's a plus. However, it is so temperamental, it only prints when it's in the mood. When it does print, it's great but it's a toss up of when it will cooperate. I turn it off, restart it, pet it, talk nicely to it when I really, really need it to work but to no avail. I would not recommend nor repurchase and I'm stuck with it because it's no longer returnable.
