Fatal Printer errors after 4 months of minor usage

Died after 4 months and 120 total pages printed. The printer is showing error 71.02.4a on the multi-color screen which is a fatal printer error. I have a warranty request inbound to HP support. I purchased the printer through Best Buy, and that initial warranty period has expired. I have hard-reset the printer, re-installed the HP ink, made sure nothing is out of order or obviously blocking any of the mechanisms, it just died an early death. It was a decen't printer for the 4 months we've had it, but we just barely went through the ink that came with it, and it has already died on us. I cannot recommend a product that ends up being a lemon. I have rebooted this printer probably 2 dozen times, factory reset it. It is practically brand new. Hopefully, HP warranty support comes through for us and I don't have to ban their products from my house for eternity.

This printer is the worst purchased I have ever made. It is very slow to load when turning it on, and also I purchased it thinking that there was an option to buy ink cartridges independently, which I did when it emptied the first time. Now that I was about to enroll to get ink through HP system it wouldn't let me, the alert on the screen says that the cartridges is not the original one and that it has been counterfeit. Also in their system its noted that they recently changed their ink requiremebts, however they are not even offering to replace the cartridges back to their brand, there is no option for me, Really!? This is a rip off and I would never buy this brand again, I tried to contact support and all they have is a robot machine and doesn't answer my simple question. I received a survey to complete and after explaining what my concerns are, they didn't have the courtesy to contact me to find a solution about the ink cartridges. Now I don't even know if I purchase the ink cartridges if it would añlow me to print, since they changed their system that we have to be enroll in their system if I want to print. I wasted $230 for nothing.

Print Quality Issues and No Help from HP or BB

Posted . Owned for 8 months when reviewed.
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Oh, this printer! Things started so well, but the print quality issues the past 4 months have been a headache and a half. Anything I print using the colors blue and yellow is a mess. HP knows of this problem and sent customers a message and new ink cartridges. But that didn't fix it, the same issue. I tried to reach out to HP multiple times to get help, but everything is automated and goes nowhere. 4 months later, after the issue began, there is no solution. I then reached out to Best Buy. No solution, after HOURS of talking to Best Buy's customer service and Geek Squad (who were all very kind, I might add, but my call was dropped a few times, and I had to call back and explain everything from the beginning, which was frustrating). Now, I am out of the money I spent on this printer just 8 months after purchasing it. I didn't buy their extended warranty plan because this printer 2k+ great reviews....and why would I not think a $200 printer would last at least a couple of years without any issues. My previous printer was $50 and lasted 8 years without any issue. I purchased this printer because of the reviews stating its quality. I use it for work to send presentation pages to clients. I cannot send them what this thing prints out. I am a designer; things need to look nice for me to present to my clients. I now go to a printer around the corner to have things printed. This printer was a waste of money for me. It has tested my patience and a huge headache. With all the other good reviews, I can only guess I received a dud. But the lack of customer service from HP and the fact that Best Buy won't stand by their product after less than a year of ownership is really disappointing. This will be the last HP product I buy.

      Hi, Meg.

I’m sorry to hear that your printer has rendered prints of poor quality and that you’ve gone through such an ordeal attempting to remedy the situation without success. I can certainly understand why you’d be exasperated by this point. With that in mind, I’ll offer some resources I hope will help you find a resolution.

As you point out, HP has identified a manufacturing issue on specific production lots of supplies that can affect print quality like you’ve encountered. This can also cause a cartridge-recognition error. HP recently released new firmware to help protect your printer from this.

You can resolve the problem by following the steps below:

      1. Visit our official support site: support.hp.com
      2. In the section called “Identify your product for manuals and specific product information” insert your printer’s serial number and click “submit.”
      3. Scroll down and click the tile with “Are you having print quality issues or getting an incompatible cartridge message?”
      4. Proceed as instructed.

If the problem persists, I suggest that you contact us directly at +1 800-474-6836 so we can help you assess the situation and find a solution. (Please note that because of restrictions on personal movement and workplace attendance associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, wait times for agents are longer than normal. Thanks in advance for your understanding.) To expedite the process, I recommend gathering the following information before the call:

      - Model number
      - Serial number
      - Your location
      - Case number (from any previous contact with HP support)

I'll also mention that HP printers have a one-year warranty from their purchase date that covers hardware as well as ink supplies, so if it comes to that, you might consider making use of it. You can verify the warranty using the following link:

A piece of garbage like every other HP product I have bought. It us frozen on the HP screen and can not reset. No way to get into the settings and this happened 5 days after the return window closed. Customer service just keeps reading their help menu and not listening. I got to settings if there us no settings menu. The power button will not shut it off and unplugging it does not reset it.

This HP printer was fine--worked pretty well most of the time for scanning and printing. However, a few months ago without warning it pushed through an update and now requires ONLY HP ink. I've spoken with the company multiple ways and can't get any solution. We've had the printer 2 years and used generic ink with no problem, so I have a bunch that I've bought. The HP brand ink is much more expensive, of course. I would rather get rid of this printer and never buy HP again than buy their ink after being swindled. Lots of others have had this experience based on online reviews.

I would not recommend an HP printer. I purchased this one because it was the only one available during the time when all of the printer shelves were empty in 2021. It has been nothing but a problem since day 1. If I try to copy something, it takes from four to five minutes before it will copy and print. HP tech supports answer is to try to sell me a new one. Don't sign up for their instant ink program. It is a scam to take your money. The last set of ink that I purchased through this program would not work after I cancelled the program... which charges you monthly, whether you need new ink or not. Buyer beware.

I have owned several HP all in one printers over the past 10 years. This is absolutely the worst printer I have ever purchased! I am pretty tech savvy but I have had nothing but trouble trying to print a document. The printer jams after printing one page of a document. It also indicates that the paper tray is open when its not. I have had the printer for a few months and have had nothing but trouble. the printer does not work. I've tried contacting HP to fix, which this has been a total nightmare. The support is non-existent. As a result, I will never buy a HP product again.

I have used HP printers exclusively for years and have always had great experiences both with the printer and with customer service when the need arose, however this time that is not the case. I have had non stop issues with this printer since I received it. Printer jams about every other print job, uses excessive yellow and red ink so it runs out to fast, and doesn’t communicate with HP instaink so I have to contact them weekly to send me ink. Originally HP was going to replace it under manufacturers warranty but a Best Buy rep online told me that would void my extended warranty through Best Buy so I didn’t allow them to replace it. I then spoke to a person at a Best Buy store and he said I could use the manufacturers warranty without voiding my Best Buy warranty only now HP won’t replace the printer. So now I either have to pay $50 for a new warranty or contact HP weekly (which I’ve been doing for over a month) for every issue that arrises with this defective printer and every time I need ink. Oh and it’s only 6mths of free ink and a $30 credit so if you’ve been with HP for quite awhile and use an ink plan higher than the minimum plan it will not equal 12 months free- you just can’t see that until you receive the box. My advice is if you do buy this printer, but the extra warranty but if it has any issues what so ever during the return window don’t contact HP, just return it directly to the store because HP will give you the run around until you can no longer return it without buying another warranty through Best Buy.

After 40 years of using HP products at work and at home, an putting up with their incremental software intrusions, particularly with their printers, I have decided to jump ship and promise never ever again to buy another HP product, I am that upset about it. I purchased this HP Officejet Pro 8035e to replace my old HP Officejet 6000 series which died a couple of weeks ago. After sending more than 3 hours trying to navigate the installation process which forces you to install HPSMART (not as smart, as it is intrusive) and pushing me to get into their pay per page gimmick, I was able to get it to wirelessly connected to my network. However I was never able to print a single page. I found it right down ridiculous that a they expect a printer that sits in my office to connect to the cloud in order to print a sheet of paper. In addition, they require every device to download their stupid app in order to print anything. Anyway, STAY AWAY from this one.

I regret purchasing this printer. I only it bought it since I purchased the HP All in One Pavilion PC (that gets 5 stars). I had so many issues. I constantly either have to BYPASS the setup cartridges and/or I get a BIG BLUE screen with the 890074 error. I'm tired of re-entering English/USA each time. It says I need to be in HP Insta Ink to use and I am. It won't let me put the new cartridges in. I looked on the HP support community It is helpful at times

I bought this printer in May 2021, and for various reasons, didn't get it hooked up until July. I hate this printer, our old HP worked so much better until it died in the spring. The paper drawer sticks ALL OF THE TIME when attempting to push it in or out. I worry about breaking it. Envelopes are extremely hard to print, keeps saying it is out of paper when it wasn’t, plus I couldn’t print envelopes because of the “no paper” message. I have to print pages of checks that are specifically made for an HP inkjet. If I don't put in a whole sheet of 3 checks, the printer won't print 2 or one by itself. They get jammed up in the mechanism and I have to take it apart to remove the ruined checks. I have used HP products for years, and have always had positive experiences. I wish I had spent a little more money on a printer, and not bothered with this model. I wouldn't mind bringing it back for an upgrade, if BB would allow it. At the same time, I also purchased the 4 year Geek Squad replacement program. I guess my question would be, can I return this and do an upgrade since I have the program

If you need a printer it has worked without problems, though I have only used it to print 5 pages since purchasing. Flimsy plastic paper tray. Want to return this as it does not serve its purpose. I needed a new scanner with a duplex document feeder so bought this specifically because my understanding was that I could duplex scan. I repeatedly told the Best Buy rep helping me that I had no interest in the printing features he kept pushing as I have a printer but needed a scanner that can scan both sides of a sheet without having to flip the stack over. After wrestling with WiFi & computer connection for days turns out it DOES NOT duplex scan, manual hardly mentions the scanning capability. Am not happy but it is too late to return. Am using my cranky old scanner in preference to this model. First not-so-good experience with Best Buy sales rep .

      Hi, Lena.

Thanks for the review. While I’m glad your printer has printed without problems, I’m sorry to hear that the setup was difficult and that the scanning feature falls short of what you need. I can see how that would be a great disappointment, especially after being told otherwise about the scanning feature. So, let’s see whether I can provide some useful information.

If you’ve not already, you can visit the link below to find user manuals, troubleshooting guides, video tutorials, software updates and other materials for your printer. In the main user manual, the section on scanning is longer than what you describe in your review, so I’m not sure whether you’ve seen this manual or not. Regardless, duplex scanning is not mentioned, although automatic duplex printing is.

It prints .... (usually) ... wasting as much paper as possible. The paper is wrinkled 85% of the time. I've bought HP printers exclusively since the mid-1980's and while the last two identical printers had identical problems after a couple years of use, this one has disappointed straight from the box, and will probably be my last HP. Having to restart it after every paper jam (a frequent event) is annoying and time-consuming. I've given up trying to feed half pages through. I suspect most of my problems relate to the flimsy, closed system paper tray, If I hadn't just replaced all the ink cartridges (after a couple weeks of use) I would have returned it, despite anxiety attacks when there is no functioning printer in the house. The best thing I can say about it is that it is quiet (probably because it is so slow).

Fast printing! Great copies! But thats about all I can positively say about this very overpriced crappy printer. I thought from the reviews that this was a decent purchase but I regret my decision. I have had problems from day 1 when I first installed this printer.....I thought maybe it was user error but after removing and installing the print drivers (a few times) it still never worked correctly. I try to change the scanner from the glass scan to the paper feeder scan option but it still scans from the glass. I also tried scanning from my computer and it shows the scan went through successfully but when I go to view the document it states that the document is blank.... I haven't had this thing for a month yet and Best Buy refuses to exchange it. Horrible experience from start to finish....I do not recommend purchasing this product.

      Hi there.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review and describe your experience thus far. While I’m glad you like certain aspects of your printer, including print speed and copy quality, I’m sorry to hear the scan function has given you so much trouble. I can easily understand why the difficult functionality you report and the unexplained blank documents after scanning would be a dreadful start to owning the device. I would love to help you remedy this situation, so I’ll provide some resources aimed at making that happen.

You can also visit a page on our support site that has diagnostic tools for various problems, including scanner issues. If you use Windows, the tool will help identify and guide you through solutions to a wide range of common scanning as well as printing issues. Visit that page here:

Set-up was easy and the printer worked great until the manufacturer supplied ink cartridges needed replacing. I opted out of HP's instant ink refill subscription plan and instead purchased a set of cartridges at Office Depot the same day I purchased the printer. After 2 months of light use, the printer would not print because 2 of the manufacturer supplied cartridges needed replacement. I opened the set of cartridges I had purchased at Office Depot and replaced all of the cartridges that had come with the printer. I got a message that the cartridges were "incompatible" with the printer, even though they were official HP cartridges and were the exact recommended number. After 2 days of HP support searches, HP support chats and recommended work-a-rounds & advice from other HP printer users (found on google searches), I returned the cartridges to Office Depot. They told me that 2 of the HP color cartridges had been recalled months ago and to this day, they could not be obtained either singly or in sets. Therefore I had a printer that would not and could not print. I returned the printer. Not sure how this plays out for instant ink subscription holders, but if you are not wanting to subscribe to the instant ink program and instead wanting to purchase replacement ink off the shelf, do not purchase this printer!

THIS PRINTER IS AWFUL, AS IS HP CUSTOMER SERVICE AND BEST BUY'S CUSTOMER SERVICE, BECAUSE NO HUMAN BEING AT BEST BUY EVEN PICKS UP THE PHONE. THE FAX FUNCTION DOES. NOT. WORK. ON THIS PRINTER. HP'S CUSTOMER SERVICE IS IN INDIA, AND IT TOOK ME LITERALLY 2 WEEKS, AND HUNDREDS OF PHONE CALLS TO FINALLY FIND ONE DECENT MAN IN INDIA TO HELP ME. WE WERE ON THE PHONE FOR 6 HOURS TODAY, AND HE SUPPOSEDLY SET ME UP WIRELESSLY. HOWEVER, HE STILL TOLD ME TO USE A PHONE CORD. I PLUGGED THE PHONE CORD AT THE BACK OF THE PRINTER IN THE PORT, AND TRIED TO SEND HIM A FAX. IT. NEVER. TRANSMITTED. AFTER TRYING TO FAX HIM FOR 4 HOURS, HE THEN TOLD ME, "WELL, WE REALLY DONT HAVE A FAX MACHINE HERE. BUT, IT'S A FAX NUMBER". I, OF COURSE, HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT MEANS. I HAVE NO ONE TO TEST THE FAX WITH, BECAUSE NO ONE I KNOW HAS A JOB AT THIS POINT. AND, VARIOUS STORES AND DOCTORS OFFICES AND THE HEALTH CLUB WILL NOT EVEN LET ME SEND A FAX TO THEM TO TEST IT. SO, ALL IN ALL, BETWEEN A TERRIBLE PRODUCT AND EVEN WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM HP, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING HP AND ALL THEIR GARBAGE PRODUCTS LIKE THE PLAGUE. BEST BUY IS JUST AS GUILTY AND BAD AS HP AS WELL, SINCE THEY OFFER NO GEEK SQUAD SUPPORT FOR ANY PRINTERS. AND, THE STORE NEVER PICKS UP THE PHONE.

DO NOT PURCHASE - HP Ink Recall

Do NOT purchase this product. I purchased this printer in August of 2020 and it has been impossible to find the ink cartridges ANYWHERE. After searching endlessly for replacement ink (not to mention how quickly each ink cartridge was drained and how expensive the cartridges are), I discovered that there has been a recall on the yellow and cyan ink cartridges. I have attempted to contact HP regarding the issue via the messenger option and the virtual assistant, both of which were completely not helpful or informative. They have "higher than normal call volume" when you get their phone number. This was the biggest waste of money and I'm very dissatisfied with this product and HP. As a company, they should offer replacement of the printer because it's pretty much worthless without being able to print color.
