    More Ink, Less Printer

The trend with printer makers nowadays is to give more ink, but that doesn't come without a cost or tradeoffs. With the HP Smart Tank 651 its immediately obvious that the tradeoff in more ink = less printer and lower quality. I'd say for the price you're getting $300 or 2 years worth of ink with a $150 printer that may not even last that full 2 years. The 651 is disappointing in almost all aspects for anyone who has used HP's extremely durable and easy to use Officejet line of printers. -Build quality is subpar, its extremely light and flimsy right out of the box. -It has a BLACK AND WHITE and NOT color LCD display and it is TINY overall. -The top scanner and doc feeder tray is super flimsy -All capacities from the built-in paper feeder to the copy feeder on top of the scan tray are vastly reduced. Literally the ONLY positive of this printer I can find is that it comes with a TON of ink. Overall it is very easy to use and set-up, the HP Smart app is very good and makes set up and printing a breeze. It also functions fine, I just don't know how durable it is given how cheap it looks and feels. This is a decent printer for those who want low maintenance printing and easy set-up without worrying about ink for a few years. However, for the price, I still prefer my much more robust Officejet printers, the latest of which the HP Officejet Pro 9020 makes this look like a toy.

Great machine plugged it in (hardwire) and it prints like a champ. A lot of ink! Remember it spills. That's where it stops. Won't connect bluetooth or any other way. Won't scan won't do anything but print! Requests for assistance were not of help but each request involved a $29.95 subscription totaling $129.00 so far; I can't get one HP service TURNED OFF. I have a PhD in Technology and this is bad. Printers are an after thought and None connect with the customer in mind. I love the precision printing! Replacement Printer cartridges can NOT be purchased! 5 years into production spares are not available; Buy a whole new printer like I did!

Colors are not vibrant or crisp. Does not print double sided unless manually fed. Has color tanks v. Cartridges but until you set it up you don’t know that in addition to the color tanks there are printer cartridges too. Which are in a pretty cramped spot. Twice now I had to “reinstall” the cartridges. So although the ink is supposed to last up to two years not sure about these extra cartridges. . We wanted a fairly small printer for counter top but we’ll see.

The printer takes too long for it to print a invoice. You tap print on computer seems and it seems to take forever before it starts to print. Once it starts printing the invoice it's okay but the command to takes forever.

It's OK. Sounds terrible every time it prints, like gears are grinding. Two disappointments I have are that it doen't have automatic 2 sided printing which I thought it did when I purchased it and also many times when it prints a page it will grab 3-4 pages at the same time.

The product sucks. If you’re a once in awhile type of user then it will be suffice. However, if you use this printer for daily use I give you 2-3 months tops. If you do buy it get the warranty so at least you’re covered

The setup was troubling as the App could not find the printer on my network. Once connected, it lost the connection many times, even though it is sitting two feet from my router. I had to contact HP support and worked with them for awhile. The only solution was to turn off the printer and shut down my router. After restart, it worked. I put in about three hours on this. My son bought a Canon printer and that was plug and play.

Incredible print quality. It's been struggling with "jammed" pages lately, but no jam. Maybe the paper is a bit cheap, but I don't think it wasn't the cheapest paper. Anyway, generally good, will have to see if the phantom jams become a repeated problem.

Printer prints slow and takes up too much space with the back page tray. It has trouble picking up my laptop. Also it starts to beep non stop if you exceed the amount of paper, which holds very little.

The set up instructions were not clear. I am not sure yet about the quality of printing because I just bought it and have made very few copies. I am concerned about moving it now because the information sheet says it has to be level when moving it because of the ink tanks.

Unfortunately, this printer did not work well for me, The ink would have been so much less, I really wanted it to work out. It was a little more complicated to set up than other HP printers I have owned. But not too complicated by any stretch. The printer does not automatically print on both sides of the paper which was a bit disappointing for a printer that cost this much. The problem I ran into with mine was after waking from sleep then either scanning or copying, the printer would start to scan and then go into neverland. Only unplugging and plugging in would fix. Returned and got a more traditional HP printer and it works great -- at much greater ink cost of course.

It does a good job of printing for my needs, however it seems to be cheaply made. I feel you have to be very careful with the trays or they could brake easily.

I don't like that I need to manually flip the paper to print on both sides. The scanner doesn't always work properly and will display the scanned pages as blank. The scan feeder doesn't always work and HP support doesn't give a simple solution for a paper jam when printing. I had to figure it out for myself and was concerned that the ink could create a mess if I jostled it around too much.

This prints and scans great...but you cannot copy great. It is harder to do double sided copies. You have to flip the paper around instead of the printer taking the paper back in. Like the idea of being able to refill the ink tanks instead of buy new cartridges. I would recommend only if some one does not need to make many copies.
