i bought this as a deal of the day $20 plus got more off with my BB rewards ... so price was a pretty good deal that BB made me buy this , ha ... i originally had another brand ,, and it worked and didn't work ... but then i didn't read up on why ,, i just hooked it up .... and then left it .. so you see in my photo now both audio converters that i have .. and this time as of now ,, i spent the time and effort to play and test and see how this is and researched how these things work .. and now i found that both converters that i have ,,, each work just fine and as designed ... which really just connects the audio with different connectors all together as a pass-thru ... now if you continue to read my review here ,, i will now give you tips ,, first ,, new tv and new bluray players and 4k players ,,, etc. can give you great sound with digital w/surround ... and of course your old audio receiver can't play that ... so you need to reset your tv or player to put out PCM audio ,,,, which is just 2 channel audio and not the multi-channel audio ... and these converters will work great ...when you switch to PCM ,, it just takes all the multi 5.1 7.1 etc .. and pass all channels combined into just 2 channels left and right for your old receiver .. i can go into more on audio quality and types ,, but you now need to research that yourself ...so my next tip is to help all you who may think it does not work with your system .. so this is what i easily see or hear when i first just hooked it up .... and what i describe will be very basic simple ,,, if you are getting static and noise out of your stereo system with the converter ,, it will likely be your tv output or player is putting out a digital audio signal ,, thus the noise static and not audio ... if you then reset your tv-player to output PCM audio ,,, i bet it will then work ... and if you donna hear anything ,, that means there is no audio signal being passed by the converter ..

I did some research on how to connect my TV that didn't have the access to connect to speaker using the out coaxial port. This converter made it possible for my family and I to enjoy surround sound in a matter of minutes (it was so easy to connect this device to my TV and the surround sound bar) in the comforts of our own home. I was searching so hard and Bestbuy had what I was looking for at a decent price. Thank you

Marrying the optical output of our new television with my trusted analog amp was exactly what I wanted. This device was super easy to set up and we now enjoy television audio through some great, classic speakers! This is an ideal solution to take digital audio to analog output devices. I used a Rewards Certificate that basically covered the tax on the purchase.

Be sure audio source is set to PCM!

Took one star away because the instructions don't mention the fact this DOESN'T work on all optical audio settings. You have to manually go into your TV (or wherever the audio is coming from, and in my case a TV) and be sure to set the optical audio to PCM. Mine was on auto and that wasn't working. All I was hearing was a super fast ticking noise. Everything is working good now that I set it to PCM. I have an LG tv & wasn't able to find the PCM setting under 'sound'. I had to scroll down to 'all settings' then click on 'sound' once again... Just a long drawn way to get to where I needed to be.

I got this so I could take the digital audio from my TV and feed it into my old analog stereo receiver which only had RCA analog inputs. It was an inexpensive way to improve the tv sound without having to get a soundbar or update to an AVR. All inclusive kit makes it easy.

The Insignia Optical/ Coaxial Digital to Analog Converter saved me over $300+. Here’s how: I own an older 5.1 audio system and recently bought a new 4K HDTV which doesn’t have / support RCA red & white audio without going optical cable out from tv through this device to the stereo. I researched this product online and bought it along with a 4 ft optical cable. Everything works great. Only reason I give it four stars instead of five is due to using multiple remotes to switch sources for audio to work.

For newer digital TVs with no Headphone jack

Use this for the newer TVs that don't have an analog audio out jack (headphone jack) - has to connect to an AV receiver or some other source, but this truly works. A bit if popping noise from time to time; that's the only reason for a 4-star vs 5-star. Great item overall - I highly recommend it.

I got a new Samsung 4k TV and as many have pointed out it does not have an analog audio out jack. I never use the TV speakers since I have a vintage Denon amp and very good JBL speakers. I do not use or care about surround sound since music is my main concern. I bought this to convert from Digital output on tv to analog input on the Denon. Works great and provides improved sound over analog. Only complaint is that I too have the occasion when I have to pull the power cord from it and reinsert to get it going which is an annoyance, but happens rarely. Have not figured out why. This unit costs considerably more than the ones you can get from the famous online competitor. I also own one of those and it works but the popping noise it creates when re-synching (change of channel for instance) is really annoying. This one pops at most once and only occasionally as opposed to at least 3 pops every time on the cheapie. I determined that you get what you pay for and will order another of these for my cd player. Only other complaint is that I wish it had a usb power cord instead of plug-in so that I could power it from a usb port on the tv, which might alleviate the occasional failure to launch. But overall a quality product that does what it is supposed to.

    Optical to RCA Converter

Purchased this to convert audio output from Samsung TV to RCA for input to old stereo tuner. Took awhile to mess with Samsung settings and finally fooled it to realize that there was going to be external audio. This is TV's fault. Once set up it works well EXCEPT now and then it doesn't and to get it going again I unplug it's power and plug power back in and all is well (not removing any of the other optic and audio cables or messing with side switch. To get around this I plan to place it on a switched power output on the old stereo amp which will also save a little power when I'm not using the amplifier (which I mostly use for movies). I did not see any way of changing the volume of the tv output, so I have to use the amplifier volume control for that. I do not know much about optical audio (I am PhD Electrical Engineer but that doesn't help much with a black box) but it does not distort so guessing there's some sort of specification guidelines for these things. So in short, it works but have to buy a cable and sometimes I have to reset power (about once every hundred times I watch TV, so maybe 4 or 5 times since I purchased this). I did not see anything better and it was convenient to purchase this and the cable at Best Buy where I purchased the tv. BTW, 2 out of 3 staff there did not know anything about how to do this. I upgraded their knowledge :-)
