Bedroom Music Producer Found His Joy

These are shockingly good. The sound they put out is absolutely crystal clear the bass is nice and deep. I originally bought them for music production in my room, but have also ended up using them for watching movies. I was planning on buying a sound bar for movies but now I don't need to with these incredible bookshelf speakers. These are a must have in my opinion for anybody dabbling in creating their own music. Not only could they be considered a great introduction pair of bookshelf speakers at a very cheap price, but my plans to buy an even more expensive pair are now on hold since these are just as good as the more expensive speakers. My room is only 15' x 20' and these speakers completely fill it with beautiful sound. My other favorite part is you can have multiple inputs playing through them at the same time. They have a really unique shape compared to other boring ol' square speakers and have nice rubberized bases to keep them stable on whatever surface they reside on. Lastly, you can use your own speaker wire (not that you will need it as they give you some with the pair) to add as much distance as you want between them so you are in no way limited by permanent wires. I highly suggest you stop searching around for any other more expensive, not as high quality pair as these two little towers if joy.

I was excited to receive JBL’s newest desktop speakers, JBL has always been known to have good quality products, but overall the speakers are just good, not great. My first impression taking the speakers out of the box was a good one, each one with a unique shape, and a good amount of weight to them, connecting everything is very simple, and all the cables come included in the box, they even feel to be of decent quality. They are 2.0 which means they are stereo speakers, no surroundsound here. My sole purpose for these speakers was for me to connect them to my computer monitor to either have audio for surfing the web, listening to music, or watching a few movies online etc, or to have audio when playing my video game system when I don’t feel like wearing my gaming headphones. You can connect the speakers in a few different ways. First the speakers have Bluetooth functionality, meaning you can connect them to any compatible device wirelessly using Bluetooth, you can use in auxiliary cable which connects to the front, or you can you see included RCA cable, which comes included, basically what that is is a 3.5mm jack that you would connect to a monitor, laptop, or any device that has this output, and the other side of the cable is that old school white and red plug. These speakers also support TRS cables. Basically what that is is like really big 3.5mm that were once really popular a long time ago, they might still be popular in the audio industry but I don’t really see them anymore. Overall the speakers sound pretty good, not great. They can get loud but nothing earth shattering, and the bass is just ok at best. In my opinion they’re a little too big to be used on a desk, they just kind of take up a lot of room, so be mindful of that if you like space in your desk, and cannot be hung on stands or wall mounted. I did experience some hissing sounds when connecting the speakers via the auxiliary cable or via the RCA cables, but otherwise sounded just fine connecting them through Bluetooth.

I've had alot of different speakers throughout my lifetime and certain brands make and keep a reputation for excellent sound and great quality and JBL is one of those brands. I've used their speakers in my car, have had their portable Bluetooth speakers which sound many times better than their size. These monitor speakers had the same effect. They were much bigger than I expected. The appearance and materials used gives them a premium look and feel. Be careful handling them the outer housing is smooth and slick so be sure to have a firm grip or they'll slip right through your hands. They have a really night weight to them, all of the buttons, input selector, and headphone and aux jack are all setup conveniently on the one master speaker. It comes with the speaker wire to connect the slave speaker to the master speaker. Comes with the power cord and RCA cord to connect an auxiliary. Everything from out of the box to setup and listening is super simple. The volume knob is right on the front for convenience. The sound quality was excellent.Nice crisp highs and a good mid tone. Not a crazy amount of bass but with these being ported it does carry the sound well. Over all I'm extremely happy with these and would highly recommend them to others

I have a bunch of speakers at home as well as a killer setup on my desk for work and whatnot, but I didn't have speakers attached to my computer. Laptop speakers weren't cutting it and a plug in speakerphone was no help at all. It was time for real speakers and these JBL's are exactly what I was missing. They sound great, were super easy to set up and they look great on my desk on either side of my monitors. There are some minor tweaks that I would make to these; the speaker wire to connect the left speaker should be longer, the bluetooth can only connect to one device at a time and I would love the option to have these sit horizontally on my desk. The speaker wire wasn't a big deal, I had some lying around and used that so I could hide easily hide the wires under my desk. The bluetooth switching can be annoying; I have my work pc and my personal pc and I have to manually disconnect and connect each one to pair. It was easier for me to use the included RCA cable to hook up right to my monitors external speaker output. The sound on these is pretty amazing for desktop speakers. I've had lots of fun listening to music and watching videos and the extra oomph is great for the many Zoom/Teams calls that I have daily. A dedicated EQ to adjust the bass and treble would be nice, but I can download an EQ app for that. I love these speakers and anyone that relies on great audio for work or home should feel the same way.

Exceptional Audio & Build Quality for Work & Play

I am honestly delighted with the audio and the build quality of these JBL Monitor Speakers. They are the perfect balance of power, clarity, and size. Though they are designed to sit at about an arms length away and pointed towards a single listener - they can easily fill a room with crisp and beautiful audio. Both Podcast and Musical recordings sound excellent - although a subwoofer will be a helpful addition for those using the speakers for media consumption. They are not the best option for portability as each speaker weighs 4lbs and because they are not particularly small. They will nearly fill a backpack all by themselves. After 20 minutes of inactivity, they enter a power saving sleep mode. At first I appreciated the feature as the power switch is out of reach on the back of the master (right speaker), but this means that I am often required to press a button or wiggle the knob to wake them back up. I appreciate that they not only have all of the input options I could want (Bluetooth, Aux, RCA, TRS), but they allow all to be selected at the same time. Meaning that I can listen to audio from my phone as I work or play games. The feature is surprisingly handy and eliminates the need to switch inputs. Simply set it and forget it. Audio remains crisp and precise even at higher volume, and the thick rubber base ensures that there is no rattle even when the speakers sit on a hard surface. The 60 watts of power (30 in each speaker) truly shines and I am exceptionally pleased with their performance.

These monitors are very nicely made. The oval shape is solid and made of very good plastic. I know a lot of speakers nowadays come in some soft of fabric or soft feel mesh—but these are monitors so good quality plastic works and they actually look nice on my desk. Installation is very easy and simple. It comes with extension wires out to the other monitor and an RCA jack if you want to connect a 3.5 to RCAs. But It also has Bluetooth connectivity. Now for the sound—dude, the sound is VERY IMPRESSIVE. The range of the sound is so wide, I can hear every instrument in songs. It makes it so easy to edit tracks. Each phase, high, mids, lows are so well-balanced. The amplification is great too. I can max the source and tried maxing the monitors without hearing any crack or break in the speakers. It has jacks in front too so 3.5s can easily be connected in front while you can leave RCAs or TRS cables connected. And the button to switch between sources is very simple to operate. So be it quarter jacks from my audio interface, a 3.5 through RCAs or at the front, or Bluetooth, it is very very easy and versatile. I recommend this to any creative music / content creator. The sound is huge and the quality is superb for its compact sleek design. Especially with all those audio peripherals on your desks—these small monsters are a clear winner!

I bought these to replace Razer Nommo speakers (without the sub), and wow, do they blow Razer away. For about the same price too. If you're looking at "gaming" speakers, I would avoid them since they seem to be more flash than function. These JBLs hit the mark perfectly. They get loud, have decent bass, and have crispy clear highs. I am truly impressed by what these two, relatively small, speakers can do. If you can pick these up on sale, definitely go for it. They are a little harder to swallow at full retail price, but again they are very good for their size. I also have a pair of Kanto Living YU2 and the JBLs are far better than those too! Those speakers are more expensive than the JBLs and they lose easily at higher volumes.

I picked the JBL’s because they offer the convenience of BT connectivity, are compact in size and ruggedly constructed. Years ago I worked in both the audio and computer retail fields. So, I’m very familiar with both types of products. Connecting the JBL’s to my Mac via BT is a snap, and the sound for their size is excellent. With speakers of this size you obviously don’t expect deep bass, but in all other respects the sound quality is exemplary.

As a video content creator, I spend a lot of time with headphones on my head, but that can get tedious and tiring pretty quickly, so it’s always nice to use reference monitor speakers to help me work more efficiently and give my head and ears a break. These JBL 104-BT Desktop reference monitors are compact, versatile, and have four input options: Bluetooth, RCA, stereo ¼-inch balanced TRS, and Aux. You’ll receive a pair of flat-bottomed capsule speakers, a master monitor (default right channel) and extension (default left channel). Thick rubber pads on the bases of the speakers keep them from sliding around and isolate them from your work surface. You’ll connect the master monitor to the extension using the included 6 foot black and red speaker wires, which can be cut to length. Volume and input controls are located on the front of the master monitor as well as 3.5mm headphone output jack and Aux-in port, while the power switch is on its back. Note that the speakers are automatically muted when headphones are plugged in. Select an input by pressing the toggle button to switch to an individual source or choose “all” which allows you to monitor all inputs simultaneously for mix monitoring. The master houses a 60-Watt amplifier that delivers 30 Watts to each speaker, allowing you to get a lot of volume out of these relatively small speakers. The sound is very clean with crisp detail and a buttery, full midrange. While the balance is neutral and flat, I found that there was excess sibilance in the upper registers, resulting in sizzly cymbals and shushy, lisp-y sounding S’s in both spoken and sung voices. There was also a general lack of punch in the bass despite having a low-frequency port on the back, 4.5-inch main driver and ¾-inch high-frequency tweeter. Bass reproduction was a bit more pronounced at higher volumes, but in general, listening to these at super loud volumes isn’t all that helpful for content creation, so if you’re mixing content where bass reproduction is critical, I highly recommend adding a subwoofer to your setup to round it out. Just be aware that if you use the supplied RCA to 3.5mm cable that this is an unbalanced cable and some interference or white noise will likely be present; I found that when using the RCA to Aux cable, at all volume levels there was audible white noise through the speakers, especially when absent a playback signal, though at lower volumes it was less perceptible. Using the TRS connections with balanced cables and an audio interface that supports balanced output may help eliminate the noise, barring any ground loop issues. Since these are designed to be desktop monitors, placement relative to the listener does have an impact on how they will ultimately sound. The ideal position is at arm’s length angled inward so the speakers are both pointed toward the listener’s ears. This will be the sweet spot where you’ll find the clearest audio and most accurate soundstage for depth and sound placement. This also means that the best sound will usually only be perceived by one person at a time. The Bluetooth 5.0 input option is an interesting feature that’s useful for reviewing your mixes post-production to hear how it’ll sound with BT compression applied. Be aware that this input option isn’t great for watching movies or video since there is a noticeable lag between audio and video streams using Bluetooth, though it’s fine for listening to music. Due to the relatively flat and neutral balance of these speakers, for media and entertainment, they won’t sparkle out-of-the-box; that can be easily remedied on a computer or audio receiver with a few quick EQ adjustments but may be a bit more challenging if you plan to use them with other consumer electronics like a gaming console or movie projector. The speakers enter a low-power standby/sleep mode after a 20-minute period of inactivity, but initiating playback or pressing the toggle button will wake it back up. This feature can also be disabled manually. As for portability, each speaker weighs around 4 lbs, so while they’re not “toss in your backpack” portable, you could still tuck them into a suitcase or pack them in the trunk on a road trip, which is what I did on a recent weeklong vacation to the shore. Overall, I found the sound from these speakers quite suitable for monitoring my recorded creative content, which consists mainly of spoken word narration and voiceover work. If working with musical content, adding a subwoofer will likely be necessary, and for casual consumptive use, they’re fine, but not fully immersive. They’re nicely designed and somewhat portable, though probably are just unnecessary travel weight if you have a decent pair of reference headphones.

These are nice looking somewhat compact Speakers. They stand about 10” Tall, 6” wide and 4.5” deep. 60 watt (30 watt x 2) First impression, I really like all the input options. Having the Bluetooth capability is a real nice feature. You can select from Bluetooth, Aux, RCA, TRS or ALL. Very nice to be able to hear multiple inputs at one time. The right speaker is the main driver, and the left is the slave that simply plugs into the right with speaker wire. The Right speaker has Volume button, Input selector, headphone jack, Aux in and Bluetooth indicator light. I will say the sound wasn't quite what I expected from JBL out of the box. The mid-base is kind of hollow, perhaps the cases could use some padding of some kind? I was able to get a nice sound through an equalizer (See pic for settings). I had to bring down some vocals and a bit of the mid bass frequencies. Maybe I am expecting too much from a 4.5” coaxial speaker per side. I am used to the solid bass thump of a separate sub-woofer. That being said, I definitely can hear every instrument in all channels that was recorded. I have no other ‘Monitor’ speakers to compare too, but if you are looking for small but powerful, you will get that with these. They get very loud and stay clean as you get there. The left and right separation is great. Aim each speaker at your ears and you will hear every detail to the music. So, my pro and con list is as follows: Affordable desktop speakers, nice size, clean sleek look, nice input options and Bluetooth works great. Cons would be a lack of solid bass. It would be nice to have a Sub-woofer option perhaps and maybe some kind of tone controls offered. (Mid, Low, High) which may help the sound straight out of the box.

These speakers sound great. Very full and crisp sound, with rich tones and accurate to me without need for corrections. They are fairly heavy and feel nice, with a unique shape that also makes them very difficult to hold onto when placing on your table or desk. That fact made it so one rolled over and picked up a scrape from my wall when I was putting it down which was very disappointing. I discovered the hard way since they are unmarked that the one with the volume and mode controls is the right speaker, and the satellite is the left. I had initially set them up the other way around. I have them hooked up to my computer via the included RCA to 3.5mm cable and tried out Bluetooth with my iPhone. Both sound great and can be selected with the button that cycles through the various modes. Even at 50% volume they are super loud but free from distortion or feedback issues. The cable used to connect them to each other is more than long enough to get around my 34” ultrawide monitor for placing them on either side as well. Hooking everything up was simple and syncing Bluetooth was a matter of a long press on the Bluetooth mode on the cycle button. They are a substantial step up from the built-in speakers on my monitor and the desktop speakers I had been using before, and I feel are worth the investment for what they can do and how they sound. I am very pleased with them and recommend them for improving your audio experience at your desktop.
