Good for Home Theater and Music

When finally ready to equip my media room, I found myself challenged to find speakers that would give me good sound for both movies and music, as well as fit a relatively tight space around my screen. I had initially looked at bookshelf speakers, thinking any tower speakers would be too big. I listened to the Martin Logan Motion 15's and really liked the sound, especially the folded ribbon tweeters. They are bright (after hearing these, I finally understand what that means) but without the harshness that I found with other speakers. Then, I noticed the Motion 40's nearby. The top is essentially a Motion 15 with the additional woofers, cabinet space, and enhanced crossovers. Even without a subwoofer, I appreciated the full range sound they offered on several demo tracks. I brought them home to put them head to head against a few other speakers I considered. I had them all hooked up to a selector switch, so I could quickly cycle between them. I found that, as I listened to the others, the sound was good...until I switched to the Motion 40's and realized all that I wasn't even hearing with the other speakers. These were the most expensive speakers in my test set and I do think they stood out enough to justify the expense. I went ahead and stretched my budget to get these as I wanted a speaker system that I could be happy with for a long long time.

Better than $4,000 speakers and I heard 10+ brands

Dollar for dollar you are going to have a hard time beating the MartinLogan Motion 40. I auditioned over 10 different speakers in the $2,000-$5,000 price range and I'll be honest, these worked extremely well for every single genre of music. Some speakers sound great with acoustic or orchestral or vocal tracks, while some sound great with rock but very few are forgiving and pleasing when it comes to all genres and compressed music. The reason I mentioned compressed music that they play nice to mp3 files (192kbps and higher) but they're not overly critical of them either. However if you can feed it high res tracks (CD quality 44.1khz/16-bit or higher), you'll be rewarded in spades. I found a pair of open box ML M40 for $1200 at Best Buy. Basically at that price nothing came close. I auditioned B&W CM10 S2, B&W CM9, Focal Aria 926, Revel F206, GoldenEar Triton 5, Paradigm 75F, Klipsch Reference R-26F, Sonus Faber Chameleon, Sonus Faber Venere 2.5 and Polk Audio LSiM705. I ended up loving the ML 40 over all. A very close second I could go with either of these B&W CM10 S2, Revel F206 or Focal Aria 926. But the ribbon tweeter on the ML40 is just so smooth. Not a hint of harshness, not overly bright and this is a speaker you can pair with pretty much any receiver. They're easy to drive and sound equally great no matter where they're plugged in. I run them through a Harman Kardon HK 3490 (but I did test them with Yamaha stereo integrated and the Peachtree Nova 150). It sounded wonderful with all of them. The speaker doesn't have the widest or deepest of soundstages compared to the few that do, and it has enough, but the imaging is superb though. It's hard to isolate the sound to one speaker. Bass is plenty although for the EDM, Rap, Hip-hop genre a sub is essential and I do plan to add two to my setup down the line. But for most everything else you'll make an easy emotional connection with your music. This is a speaker I can live with for a long time, WAF is high and the listening experience never gets fatiguing. And the price was too hard to pass up. What's not to like?

I was comparing the B&W CM-9 to the ML Motion 40 and found the ML to be a better sounding speaker. Side-by-side in the Magnolia center the Motion 40 sounded tighter in the mids and highs then the CM-9 and cost about a grand less. Now the 40s compliment my Motion 15s (surround), Motion 30 (center), ML ATMOS and two ML Dynamo 500 subs. Fantastic sound. You may need a high quality 4 ohm amp, 100 watts per channel or above, the likes of Marantz, Rotel or Anthem receivers needed to push these 4 ohm speakers.

    Outstanding Speaker

First I'd like to say that I've owned many speakers in my life from Energy, JBL, B&W, Bose, PSB, to name a few. I popped into a Best Buy/Magnolia to listen to various speakers and as I was about done the sales rep said "take a listen to these Martin's"...I was instantly hooked. They had the clearest highs, articulate mid-range and perfectly rounded bass of the speakers in the listening room. They're beautifully finished in a high-gloss black and are simply an outstanding value. I'm driving mine with a Parasound Pre-Amp and Amp, AudioQuest Dragonfly and various uncompressed music formats and the sound couldn't be any sweeter. Give them a listen, you won't be sorry.

I've been eyeing these speakers for years and the wait was worth it. Every time during this period when I stopped into the Magnolia section I would audition them, along with other brands and were always blown away by the clarity they provided for both the changing movie and music selection they would have. The only speaker that came close in this price range was the B&W 683's however the non conventional design, and the softer sound of the folded tweeter always won me over time and time again on the Martin Logans. The sound really brings you in, and if you need to really crank them you will feel like you are at a concert. Just amazing non pretentious chest thumping sound. The Motion 40s to me sounded similar to the 60s, so I opted to save the extra few bucks. The 40s also physically fit better into my setup, but please take you time and listen to these speakers on different days and different moods.. You will see how amazing they are

I originally went into BB Magnolia to purchase a pair of B&W 683 S2's for my home theater setup. My budget was in the $2k range so I knew I could get a great pair of floor standing speakers that would last me for years. Now keep in mind that before I settled for a pair, I stopped by Magnolia during lunch break for an entire week before making my decision. I started off with the B&W 683 S2's paired with a Pioneer Elite SC-81, the B&W 683 S2's sounded warm (which is my preference), full and powerful as expected. I then thought to myself, why not try the Motion 40's? I've heard nothing but the best from reviewers online who actually them paid with a more than capable receiver. So what did I do? Switched the setup over to the Martin Logan Motion 40's and my ears were blown away! The sound reproduction coming from the Martin Logan Motion 40's were just insane and out of this world, I couldn't believe what I was hearing! What I loved the most about the Martin Logan Motion 40's were the high crisp details that I didn't even know existed until I heard the sound reproduction straight from these awesome speakers, compared to the B&W 683 S2's it was a no competition, the Motion 40's wiped the floor and it wasn't even close in my honest opinion. With that said, I bought a pair, hooked them up to my Pioneer Elite SC-71 AV Receiver and couldn't be happier with my purchase. I initially thought I'd need my subwoofer but with these babies bi-amped there was no need for a subwoofer at all. The Pioneer Elite SC-71 provides more than enough juice with it's Class-D amp. Go buy these speakers, Martin Logan outdid themselves on this one, truly one of the best speakers that I've ever heard in my life!

I originally came into my local Best Buy Magnolia HiFi center to listen to another pair of speakers. These little gems were not even on my radar. The look of the speakers lead me to believe they were several times more expensive than what the actually price was. A beautiful piano gloss black finish and speaker grills that dictate there is something sinister underneath. Needless to say I was shocked when these were fired up and played sound that was just amazing. I did not believe that the bass response from these and even looked for a subwoofer that my have been on at that time, but these little gems were the only speakers playing. The Highs, Mids, and Lows from this speaker seem to defy what should be allowed to be produced from a loud speaker this size and at this price point. I took them home and now am a proud owner of a pay of ML Motion 40. They complement my system well and I still cannot stop staring at these beautiful works of art. Amazing accurate bass, solid Mids, and High frequency response that will amaze you, all from one sexy package.

Word of caution with these speakers

I have these hooked up to a Marantz 5008 receiver, which is a pretty respectable piece of equipment. After about a month it started shutting down into protection mode while using these speakers. What I found out was (by Marantz) that these speakers, in fact all ML's are, truly 4 ohm speakers even though they say they are compatible with 8 ohm receivers. In short they are power hungry and your receiver will try to push them at 4 ohms eventually causing clipping, overheating, etc. One solution, Bi-amping, Ive never been a fan of that but in this case it worked. I immediately noticed a difference, it was a WOW moment for me, they outperform my B&W's and Def Tech super towers and this point. My Marantz seems to be running cooler now as well.

These are the best looking speakers on the market but that's not why I bought them. I bought them because of their clarity. I actually listen to movies and music at a lower volume because these speakers sound so clean. Well worth the purchase. I bought at Best Buy with a Best Buy Credit card and a 10% off coupon off of one item. Best Buy has these for 949 and online they are going for 999 but no tax. If you use. The Best Buy CC you get at least 4% back, and easy returns. I went with Best Buy because they were about the same price after all said but I didn't have to worry about shipping damage or return hassles. Ohh and instant gratification.

Went to the Magnolia room to compare between the Bowers Wilkins and Definitive Technology. BB representative asked me to give a listen to the Martin Logan. I was surprised by how much clearer the ML was compared to the other 2 brands. I sampled several DVDs and the ML wins out every time. I ended up purchasing the entire ML system, Motion 40 fronts, Motion 8 center, Motion 6 rears and the Dynamo 500. I am hearing sounds that I could not hear before from the Bose Acoustimass 16 that I replaced.

I was already the owner of a Martin Logan Motion 12 speaker which I was using as a center speaker. It sounded so much better than my main speakers that I began to check out the Motion 20's and 40,s. I was fortunate to be able to visit a Magnolia Design Studio to audition the Martin Logans and other speakers. I am not a novice to Hi-Fi, and was able to converse with the knowledgeable staff weighing the pros and cons of other speakers on display, some costing much more than the 40's. I already had my mind made up my mind on the Martin Logan 40,s, mostly because I knew how the 12's sounded in my home. After installing the 40',s, it really did take a month for the speakers to shine. I have them hooked up to a Denon AVR-X3000 in the bi-amped mode, as these really are 4 Ohm speakers, and benefited from the extra power bi-amping provided. I was also able to procure the Motion 15's for the completion of a 5.1 system. I won't write that I heard sounds that I never heard before, as my other speakers were also high end. However, the Martin Logan's just had that edge that appealed to me. The system is used 70/30 for music and Home theatre. I use a subwoofer for home theater, not necessary for music. In conclusion, if you are able to get an all Martin Logan Motion system, you will not be disappointed. Regardless, you cannot go wrong with either the 40's, 20's or 15's as main speakers.

My personal favorite for tower speakers. I recently purchased these and absolutely love them!! The clarity, detail and power from the speakers is amazing and I look forward to hearing them everyday. I can hear subtle things in my music like never before and they make me feel like I am at a movie theater when I watch a movie. I do wish the finish was a little different, maybe a slightly lighter color or more of a wood grain.
