The bad, the good, and the stupid

I’m a smart home junkie. Everything from the lights to the sound system is automated, but the Yale lock isn’t my favorite purchase. Our prior lock was August. I thought this would be an upgrade, with the keypad built in. I actually purchased 2, but haven’t installed the 2nd one because the 1st isn’t fully functional. I accomplished the Master Code setup, but inspire of taking it apart to reset it several times, I can’t get it to let me program other codes or access the lock remotely or use it as I used August to set up an Auto Unlock when I come home. The lock is attractive. For punching in the 1 code I could program, it works. We are using other smart products in our home from Nest, Hue, Ring, Ecobee, etc. The primary deficit of the product is the lack of the ability to use both Google and Alexa. I get it that Nest is trying to corner the market, but this is sort of like the Apple/Windows battle of the 90’s. Stupid. For that simple reason, I can’t recommend this product.

The lock itself works great when at the door. Makes life so much easier than carrying a key around. So...I'm pretty good with computers, etc. This should have been so much easier to set up! Have a Nest thermostat so figured it would be easy to add. It had a tough time communicating with the Nest Connect and I had to reset numerous times. Had the Connect less than 5 feet from the door. Would always show connected but lock wouldn't communicate through it. Not sure how... but after about 5 tries, it started working. Now... the problem is if power goes out or need to reset router, the lock continues to work at the door but not through the app. Have to reset the lock...(oh my) which means taking the batteries out to get to the reset button. Can't believe how poorly they designed this! Not sure why it won't reconnect once router resets but.. it doesn't. Guess I will pray power doesn't go out.

The lock itself is decent quality and does the job. Out of the box installation was about 20 minutes and the instructions walk you through. The reason I give it 3 stars versus 5 is because of the issues I’ve had with the nest adapter dropping connection with the lock within 48 hours of the installation. I originally had the nest adapter about 4 feet from the lock and after removing the lock completely and resetting it, I started fresh again with a new install with the adapter relocated about 20 feet away in front of the door. I had issues with the app not recognizing the lock and then with the lock not communicating with the adapter. After about an hour of trying, I finally got it set up again. Aside from that, it works a smart lock should and seems to be working better now. I also think the lock is a little pricey.

Installation was relatively for the physical portion. Struggled to get the lock to pair and connect to the wifi for some reason. Had the bridge plugged in next to it and still had trouble connecting. Overall its decent but dont know if its worth the price. Also doesnt work with alexa so keep that in mind if you use that. Need to use google home instead.

Hi there, Chaoz. We appreciate your feedback, and we're sorry to hear about the difficult experience you had while setting up and connecting your Nest x Yale Lock.

Please note that the Nest x Yale Lock cannot connect directly to your Wi-Fi network. It needs to connect to the Nest Connect first, which comes with your Nest lock. The Nest Connect acts as a border router to your Wi-Fi network. To ensure a stable connection, please consider the following steps:
      - Check the proximity: Make sure your Nest x Yale Lock and Wi-Fi router are within range of the Nest Connect, ideally within 50 feet in direct line of sight. Keep in mind that this range could be shorter if there are potential sources of interference, such as physical obstacles like thick walls, mirrors, windows, and competing signals from other wireless devices, baby monitors, microwaves, etc.
      - Restart your devices: Try restarting the Nest x Yale Lock, Nest Connect, and your Wi-Fi router to refresh the connections.
      - Adjust device placement: If necessary, consider moving the devices closer together to establish a stable connection.

Additionally, you may want to check your current setup and see if some of the recommended items below can prove to be helpful:
      - Disable cellular/mobile data for your mobile device where the Nest app or Home app is installed. Ensure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your lock. To ensure cellular data is off, turn on Airplane mode and then turn on Wi-Fi.
      - Check the OS version of your mobile phone device. We recommend using Android 8.0 or later for Android phones or tablets, and iOS 14.0 or later versions for iPhones or iPads when using the Nest app or Home app.
      - Try updating the Home app.
      - Consider installing the Home app, using the same account, on another mobile phone or tablet device, and see if the issue persists.
      - If you don't experience the same issue with another device, we recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the Nest app or Home app on the main mobile phone device.

If the connection issue persists, we recommend reaching out to our support team for further assistance through this link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Easy set up, connects to nest. The battery life seems good, easy to use through neat app. The one thing I am having some issues with is the response when you press the numbers manually could be improved. Sometimes you press and the response delayed you press it again and the code is wrong. Also, I am having difficulty to add another user in the app. In our case we can only use one app other have to manually key in the code.

Purchased this product about 2 years ago. Initial set up was pretty easy. I did have an issue with the app where my lock would unlock by itself several times throughout the day so I had to uninstall the app. After that, it worked fine but I was not able to unlock from my phone due to no longer having the app. Here we are as mentioned about 2 years later and the lock is started to malfunction. It drains batteries in about a day. I already reset the device and it is stillnnot working. I would not recommend this product due to the life span which came out to be abput 2 years.

The overall look and feel of the device is great. But it has an apparently known issue with c7000 nighthawk modem wireless issues, it also has no IFTTT integration or echo integration for locking the door. The forethought of adding a 9 bolt power terminal to the exterior in case of battery failure is awesome. I want to really like it, but not being able to pair to wifi since I have a high end modem seems bad. I'm sure it's some form of addressing or packet issue since it completely corrupts the wifi and forces a reboot of the router to regain networking.

I’m conflicted on this review because the lock seems like it works well but getting it setup I ran into problems. Initially it worked great but then for some reason the door would not open. I called Yale but they referred me to Google to solve the problem. It turns out if you reset the lock and it’s still not working you need to update the master code in the app and not on the lock. I also had to buy a Wi-Fi extender because my router was too far away. My router is downstairs, only about 50 feet away. Heads up if the door shows disconnected on the nest app.

It's just the deadbolt. No door knob included. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a smart deadbolt if you still need a key to unlock the knob. Of course you could always have the knob unlocked and just use the deadbolt, but the idea seems strange to me (having an extra security feature you wouldn't use). Also, in following the instructions, the lock was not connecting to my phone. Everything was connected to the wifi. The egg (or whatever it's called) was working. It was connecting to my phone, but the lock itself wasn't. Not sure what the issue was. I returned it, but its probably worth having for someone else.

This lock is the most beautiful one available and for a while was working perfectly. I love nest. For some reason after about 5 months the lock kept loosing connection and it is a painful journey to re-adding the lock. I eventually couldnt trust it and used my geek squad protection to trade it in for a different model. Online research there are some known issues like mine in the nest community but not much has been done to address it. Also because the lock is a joint venture between yale and nest I had to troubleshoot with both companies which was incredibly annoying.

It works well and looks great. But I cannot stand the buttons. The sound effects indicating that you’ve pressed a button don’t always come through. So it’s unclear if the button has been pressed. I regularly have to re-enter the code, simply because I repeat a number because I’m not sure if I’ve pressed a button. And you can’t enter the numbers fast, because again, the sound doesn’t keep up with the buttons.

The lock itself is great. The ability to unlock the door from the Nest app on my phone is excellent. The areas where this device fails are twofold. 1) Installation was much more difficult than I anticipated. Took several hours. Granted, I had to drill a larger hole in my door to accommodate the deadbolt since my previous deadbolt was smaller, but the entire installation lasted about 6 hours. This time was due to unexpected difficulty, trips to the hardware store and cleanup of sawdust. Once installed, the lock sits slightly crooked. 2) Network Connectivity is unstable. The lock connects to your wifi through the separate Nest Connect bridge device. This device lost wifi connectivity twice in the first week. After much research, I found this has issues with mesh networks, even Google Wifi (Nest is owned by Google.) I finally moved the Nest Connect to the guest network, all by itself to resolve the issue. Side note, if you ever have to perform a reset of the lock, you have to unscrew the panel and remove the 4 batteries to access the reset button. What a pain. All in all, when it works, it works well but double check your existing deadbolt size, triple the amount of time you plan on installing and expect network issues. I sincerely hope the second generation of this lock fixes the issues. This device is not in the same user experience league as the Nest Thermostat and Google Wifi.

Bought this at BB. Paid them to install it,thinking geek squad would be the ones doing the installation. Wrong they 3rd partied it to OnTech ( which i do recommend) OnTech did tell me they also sale the lock abs offer a better guarantee and warranty than Best Buy. The issues with the lock is it sometimes loses connection with google home And FYI must have the google nest as well. Lock will also up off line periodically. There is no key option either. Hi Coach,

We appreciate your feedback. OnTech is our partner in helping our customers install their Google Nest products and we're glad to hear they were able to help you with your Nest x Yale Lock installation.

We apologize for the connectivity issue with your Nest x Yale Lock as we know it can be inconvenient. Some connectivity issues may be caused by interference from the thickness and type of walls, mirrors, windows and competing signals (other wireless devices, microwaves, etc.) in your home. We suggest making sure your lock, Nest Connect and your Wi-Fi router are within the ideal distance from each other and are clear from any possible interference. Placing them within a clear line of sight will be a preferable setup while Nest Connect is recommended to be placed within about 50ft. from your Wi-Fi router.

Another possible reason for the connectivity issue may also be your Wi-Fi bandwidth availability. Nest Connect may disconnect if there is not enough bandwidth on your network. Decongesting your network by temporarily removing some connected devices can help isolate this further. If there is a bandwidth congestion, you may need to contact your internet service provider for possible solutions.

We can help you further with any other concern about your Nest x Yale Lock if you can visit our support page here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/contactflow Nest

Install is not too difficult if you have a modern or simply new door that you can drill holes into. Geek Squad was unable to install. Once holes are in, it is pretty simple install and set up. Works great but expected a more responsive screen and better app features given the price point.

I've only had the lock for about a week, but I like it so far. The only difficulty is getting it set up and getting it to connect to the Nest Connect that comes in the box. Follow the instructions online and the app won't connect to the Connect to get it to look for the lock. About an hour on the phone with tech support specialist and nothing. They had me reset the Connect and the lights did not flash in the order that they expected. Another 2 hours on hold waiting for a senior tech specialist before I'm disconnected. While I'm on hold, I do a search for the error code online and find what I would consider a terrible work around. Once the Connect is connected to your Wi-Fi and you're ready to connect the lock, switch the connect to a different Wi-Fi network and then back to the original network and everything worked great. The tech support I talked to didn't seem to be aware of this work around, although they did suspect it was something with the Wi-Fi connection and had me disable the 5 GHz network and make sure IPv6 was enabled. I did not call back to make them aware of the work around, but hopefully they are working on something to get it fixed. Doorbell connected to Connect without any problems. I would recommend, but make sure they know about the work around.

Good quality lock but it should be much better to have a built in hub to communicate third party applications or voice recognition such as alexa or google assitant. You still have to buy $50-$100 hub to maximize its features.. But when it comes to security for lock. Good quality doing it manually.

Hi there, DaisyC. We appreciate your feedback on the Nest x Yale Lock, and we’re sorry to hear it doesn’t work with the app. The first step is to make sure that your border router (Nest Connect) is within range (~50ft direct line of sight) of the Nest x Yale Lock and Wi-Fi router. This range could be shorter if there are potential sources of interference, either physical interference (thickness and type of walls, mirrors, windows, etc.) and competing signals (other wireless devices, baby monitors, microwaves, etc.). If Nest Connect is too far away from your lock, your lock will be offline in the app but Nest Connect will be online. If Nest Connect is too far away from your Wi-Fi router, both Nest Connect and your lock will be offline in the app. Learn how to troubleshoot Nest Connect here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9235363
