Great Versatile Microphone with Minor Quirks

I’ve been using the RØDE VideoMic NTG for a while now, and it delivers excellent sound quality for a compact shotgun mic. The directional pickup pattern helps isolate vocals, reducing background noise effectively, and the USB-C connectivity is a great feature for versatility. The built-in rechargeable battery is another plus, lasting long enough for extended shoots without issues. However, I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because the auto-power feature can be a bit inconsistent, occasionally staying on when unplugged. Also, while the shock mount is decent, it could be sturdier, especially for handheld or mobile use. Overall, this is a solid choice for content creators, offering pro-level sound in a portable form factor. Highly recommended, just keep in mind the minor quirks!

The only microphone you'll ever need to buy

I just want to start by saying this is probably the most versatile microphone I've ever used. I am probably 15 different microphones ranging from Dynamics, condensers, lavaliers, short shotgun microphones and USB microphones. I can confidently say that I would choose the rode videomic NTG every time for most everyday uses even over my more expensive ones. The reason why is this microphone is just so versatile with its features. It can record in two channels stereo to avoid clipping, it has a high pass filter and has a very easy to use gain knob. The Rode videomic NTG can be used as a USB microphone or can be hooked up to your phone and can be used on your mirrorless camera. This microphone could be used out of frame when you're talking or can use it up close for voice over. The microphone has a solid built and using the windscreen attachment it can be used outdoors like a charm. I cannot think of any other microphone that can be used with my DSLR camera my phone and my laptop. This microphone can do all that. If you are a vlogger on your phone or using a DSL camera this is your microphone I would say this is the gold standard for vlogging microphones. If you use discord, zoom or Microsoft teams on your phone this is one of the only microphones you can plug your headphones into and be able to hear people talking while you're talking to them to get great audio quality through your phone. The final icing on the cake for this particular microphone is it also comes with a 10-year warranty. I have had other microphones from rode break in the past and they're a great company that replaces their product immediately if it is defective. It is a great microphone and I'd suggested to just about anyone.

    Versatile Mic with Excellent Sound

The quality of the NTG is the best you can buy for less than $1,000. Picks up every sound your ears can hear, without static room noise. It even heard water flowing through the pipes on the opposite side of my house while I was playing the piano. It's so versatile. I love that it has a USB-C connection on the side, because I can plug it into my smart phone or computer and use it to film and record with this external mic as the source. You can also use it with an Apple product when you buy a USB-C to Lightning cable made by Rode. It does everything you want a mic to do, it sounds great, and it's more affordable than mics at four times or higher the cost. So it's the best way to get broadcast audio on a budget. I spent weeks researching which mic to buy, and I'm happy with my purchase of the NTG.

What a great sounding and versatile microphone. I tend to over research every purchase to get the best value. After hours of reading and watching reviews on the best mics for all around use, like podcasting, voiceovers, video, and even teams meetings, this mic stood out. Just last week, I used it to record an audio commentary for a college course and then slapped it on my Sony A7III for some video. Audio is crisp and clean, doing a great job keeping the noise to a minimum, even in my echo chamber of an office/bedroom. The best part (for me) is I didn’t have to buy an audio input for an XLR cable as this is a USB mic… technically. Meaning it sounds just as good as an XLR mic IMO. Literally plug and play. Another standout feature is the gain wheel on the rear. What a convenient addition for on-the-fly adjustment. Overall, I’m very happy I spent the money for the Rode VideoMic NTG. I only docked it a point due to its price. But honestly, the features and value justifies it.

Great sounding audio from this mic. Works really well with the Sony a7siii. I would recommend bringing down the audio levels in-camera to about 2 (for the a7siii) A lot of people have complained about the hissing sound, and bringing down the audio levels in camera is exactly how you fix the issue. I love the fact you can run it through your computer or phone. The back-up audio track is a life saver. The only two negatives I have is the fact it doesn’t come with a dead cat (wind screen), and no carrying case. You’ll have to get the windscreen WS-11 from Rode for about 30 bucks. It does come with a normal foam cover.

This is a decent (short) shotgun microphone. The slef-noise is pretty low and the sound quality is good, though not as good as a longer, true shotgun microphone. The main reason I got this was flexibility. It'll take phantom power through the XLR Pro adapter (and will auto power-on/off). i can use it with my MacBook via USB-C, my iPhone with a USB-C/Lightning cable and with a normal 3.5mm input.

Versatile and easy to use microphone for DSLRs and iPhones. This is the 2nd Rode mic I've owned and it is a big improvement over the older videomic I own. I really like that it has an internal battery that lasts all day and can also be used as a USB mic for your computer. I highly recommend also buying the SC15 Lightning to USB-C Cable that Rode makes as it allows you to plug the microphone into your iPhone.

This mic is awesome. I had been using a shure mic and just decided to give this new rode a shot. So far we love it. The volume gain is in the perfect spot and the mic does a great job with nice and clear tones. I love having the rechargeable batteries and being able to use it as a pc mic using usb is a huge bonus.

This is one of the most versatile mics anyone looking for a mic can get. Great at being a shotgun mic, can also be a computer mic via usb or even console mic because it has a built in audio jack to plug in headphones. Step less gain control so if you need to adjust audio while shooting it won’t make a noise in the end video.

Fantastic multi-purpose piece of equipment: shotgun mic, remote mic (when I connect to a Wireless Go II transmitter), USB-C audio interface, and duster when dead cat is on it (I kid). Sound quality is excellent. For the price, I wish it came with a protective case for mic and it's accompanying accessories) though.

I ended up selling this for a more compact solution for my sony camera and ultimately ended up on the ECM-B1M due to its easy integration and no charging needed. For the 6 months or so that i had this mic and used it i was very pleased with the quality. Rode makes some great products.

The Most Versatile Mic to Date

Rode's Videomics have long been somewhat of an entry level standard. The newer NTG model pics up where they left off with the Videomic Pro and adds some new incredibly valuable features. I bought this mic to use as the new audio source for YouTube videos. It replaced a very good Sennheiser lav mic setup. The sound quality that you get from the NTG is extremely impressive. The mic is well built, with an all aluminum shell. The buttons and knobs are all quality as well. The thing that really separates this mic from the pack (aside from sound quality) is its ability to be used as a computer mic with a USB-C cable. This allows you to have an incredible sounding mic for podcasts or zoom meetings. Or in my case use the same mic for voice overs and talking head shots in my videos. The NTG crushes mics like the Blue Yeti, and similarly priced USB condenser mics in terms of sound quality, while also sounding even better as a typical boom mic. Its really an incredible value.

love this mic, I use it as a boom mic for a cooking show or vlogging, streaming, this has a-lot of great features and for the price this is probably the best one, this is a must have ..is it for music? not really but say you are doing a live sevice or something outside, I have no problems, my other go to mic is the shure mv88 plus, its more money so if you are looking for a reliable mic to run and gun these two are the best I think.. Rode ngt, Great mic worth the money

The sound quality at this price point is spectacular. From here on up pricing for audio equipment starts to increase exponentially with only marginal gains. For how versatile, detachable, mountable it is, I don't think anything comes close. The quick features paired with the manual dial really let you key in on what you want to get picked up without everything you dont.

So i was alittle skeptical but excited to deal with this microphone. Skeptical because i was always questioning if i really needed this much quality when i have a Rode video micro, amazon basics on camera microphone, two lavalier mics and the Rode wireless GO to use and all gives me good audio quality in their own right. So i took to the internet and some some due diligence like you are and looked up this microphone and specs and read review after review after review and decided to pull the trigger. Boy am i glad i did. Other then the professional look of it and it giving people the idea that i am performing something professional like when using it, it really does sound good. Something i've noticed in Post production is that most all of the time this microphone records two channels. It records a higher one and then a regular volume. It could be a setting maybe but im pretty sure i record my audio with every extra option off to ensure it doesnt do that but it seems to do it anyway. So ill usually have to adjust the left and right channels to balance out in the middle so that anyone watching my videos can hear me evenly from left and right channels. This microphone delivers everything advertised. If you guys want to hear actual sampling and any comparisons vs other microphones, feel free to check out my videos. This is a good microphone guys, just make sure its the microphone for YOU! This is a comparison video of three of all the microphones i own with the Rode NTG as a competitor.

I have multiple purchases from Rode and each has been a great buy and quality all the way through. Well built and easy to use. No fuss or complicated set up. I was on the fence initially but glad that I made the purchase. Sound quality is a 10 plus. Took my video quality to another level.

AWESOME mic! Hands down a great multi-use mic that can hang out with the big boi shotguns. Not nearly the same quality but still... a serious option for many pros out there. Some notes tho... WISH it had a longer cable and an extension for booming **included** and seriously the red shock mount trend needs to end. Looks so dumb. Other than that the quality and functionality is B+ to A- ish. The value is good and the ability to use it stand-alone is a huge plus!
