This is my second Samsung external SSD. My first also being a 1TB T7 but the non shield version, which I also wrote a separate review on almost 2 years ago. In just about every way the T7 Shield is the same as the regular T7, outside of the obvious exterior casing. Most importantly though, it's still just as great. In fact I still use my original T7 to this day, but I needed more storage, so that's where this new T7 Shield comes in. My main reason and use for having this external SSD is for storing video footage used on my youtube channel, so this SSD sees a LOT of use with a LOT of reading and writing. As I said initially, I already have one T7 that's doing a great job for me still, but I'm always concerned about the abuse it sometimes takes as it travels quite a bit with me. This new T7 Shield puts my mind at ease with all the extra protection it has. As much as my original T7 has held up all this time, this one may be near indestructible! It's not a lot of extra cost either over the non-shield so it's definitely worth it when you use it the way I do. Back to performance though, this SSD easily keeps up with my demands. The typical cycle starts with me transferring footage from my various SD cards to the SSD. In cases where I'm at an event doing a lot of filming I'll clear out my SD cards nightly and then go back into the SSD later on to organize all the files. I then edit my videos on my MacBook using Final Cut Pro, which uses a lot of storage space for each project. Since space on my MacBook is limited, I keep all the source files on this SSD for Final Cut Pro to read from. Once edited I write the final videos to this SSD and then when it comes time to upload to YouTube, my videos again are being uploaded directly from the SSD. Finally once I'm done with a given video I move all the files to another hard drive I keep solely for archiving. Then rinse and repeat all over again for the next video project. Of all the bottlenecks in transferring data this SSD is never one of them. Whether writing to it, organizing files, reading files, etc., it handles it all easily. I've never had any type of data corruption issues with my first T7 or this new T7 Shield and they've become absolutely essential to me. I honestly can't say enough good things about the T7 SSD. If you need a storage solution that's durable and can take a lot of use, and abuse, I highly recommend this Samsung T7 SSD.

I have been on the lookout for an external drive and this one is just what I needed. It’s small, fast and durable. The setup is literally plug and play on my HP Spectre x360 Windows laptop running Windows 10. The drive comes with Samsung software right at the root of the drive, for enabling encryption and firmware updates. I don’t care to encrypt it at this point and there weren’t any updates, but the software interface is simple and intuitive. I performed some speed tests on the drive and on my internal SSD (HP Spectre x360). My internal SSD was the fastest at 1550 MB/s sequential reads. With USB-C the T7 did 1057 MB/s sequential reads and with USB-A it did 460 MB/s sequential reads (see attached screenshots). Pros: -Small -Fast -Durable -Comes with two cables, one for USB-A and one forUSB-C Cons: -None that I found Final Thoughts: The Samsung T7 Shield is an excellent external USB drive. It is rugged and fast. The compatability across Windows, Mac and Android is great and the fact the drive comes with the software embedded is a plus. I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone.

A small, rugged, and fast external storage device. Fits in the palm of your hand, lightweight, and has a rubberized coating. Comes with a USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cables. The device has one USB-C port, and a status light. The Blue is a nice deep color. In the pictures attach are speed from connecting to a USB3-C Gen2, USB3-C Gen 1, USB3-A, and USB 2 ports. On a USB3 Gen 2, 2.4GB took ~5 seconds, about 600MB per second. USB3 Gen 1 took ~10 seconds for the same file. Tried it with multiple files and it never got hot. Samsung Magician recognized the device and provided the speeds with various connections. It also comes with Samsung Portable SSD Software which allows you to password protect the drive. No password, no access, so your protected on the go with AES 256-bit hardware encryption. Small, fast, and reliable. 1TB is a good size for carrying a lot of files, or music, whatever you need. Samsung SSD's have are usually reliable and with no moving parts, I'd expect this to last a while, even with drops and getting water on it as it's IP65 rated.

INTRO The Samsung T7 Shield is the newest 1TB external SSD from Samsung. It is an NVME drive inside an external enclosure and wrapped in a rubberized sleeve. It is shock rated for drops and is IP65 rated against moisture and dust intrusion. The drive includes a USB-A to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-C cable. Samsung claims a theoretical throughput capability of up to 1000MB/s. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION My test rig is the Asus ROG Zephyrus. It has a 12th generation Core i9 processor, 16GB of DDR-5 RAM, and Windows 11, with all the latest updates and drivers installed. The Asus sports the latest generation Thunderbolt 4 port, capable of transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s, which is more than enough to test the limits of the T7. Windows 11 immediately recognized the drive after connecting it and no further interactions were required to get the drive up and running. I downloaded the latest version of the Samsung Magician software and CrystalDiskMark to get the information from the drive. I am happy to report this external SSD is equipped with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. While not as fast as Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 is still very fast and supports speeds up to 10Gb/s or 1250 MB/s. TEST RESULTS AND SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE How did the T7 Shield perform? Speed are listed below: Sequential Read: 763 MB/s Sequential Write: 866 MB/s Both results are with Queues of 1 and Thread Counts of 1. Excellent performance. The drive is speedy and responsive. While it doesn’t live up to Samsung’s 1000MB/s claim, it comes very close. Closer than most drives do with manufacturer’s advertised speeds. For comparison, I included a screen shot of the speeds from the latest Western Digital Black 2TB Game Drive. I know it is an apples to oranges comparison, putting an SSD up against a HDD, but the differences in performance are phenomenal. If anyone is still using an external HDD for storage and is on the fence of whether they should upgrade, the performance improvement should answer your questions. The Samsung Magician software, as always, is polished and very refined. The software allows you to manage nearly every aspect of the T7 and is user-friendly and intuitive. Samsung wisely includes the option to password protect the T7 which is a great feature for travel. NEGATIVES This is one of the very few times I am at a loss for words. FINAL THOUGHTS The Samsung T7 Shield is an excellent external USB SSD. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android. It is small, light, and is rated against dust and water intrusion. The rubberized covering helps to protect it from the inevitable drops. Samsung has long been a standout in the world of solid-state drives. Their drives always boast some of the best performance and warranties in the business. I see the T7 Shield fully living up to Samsung’s well-deserved reputation. Easily Recommended.

The main selling point is that this is supposed to be tough. You can drop it. It can handle a bit of rain and dust. If that appeals to you, then this might be the right portable SSD for you. On the other hand, that durability comes at a price, so if you don't need it, there are other, cheaper solutions out there. The two end caps appear to be solid aluminum, and the outer surface is coated in soft rubber (presumably there is aluminum under this, but I am not taking mine apart to verify this). This rubber extends past the edges of the end caps, so even if you drop this and it lands on a corner, it should survive. Other than maybe the USB-C port, there is no visible place for water or dust to ingress. But just looking into the port, it appears to be sealed with a red rubber gasket between the port and the end cap. As to performance, my PC only has 5Gb/s USB ports, so I was able to get nowhere near the advertised maximum. But I still found the performance to be very acceptable. Note that this unit advertised 256-bit hardware encryption, but that must be enabled using the included software. The Windows version is actually an installer! This baffles me. For a portable device that you might want to use on multiple computers, the software should be stand-alone and just run by itself. However, I don’t really see myself using the on-board encryption. If I need encryption, I could easily install the open-source VeraCrypt. That software can make an encrypted partition and run off of the drive itself, (no installation required). VeraSrypt is also available on Linux, something that the Samsung encryption software can’t claim. So, if you are going on safari and need something reliable to hold your photos, this seems like it might be a great option. Or if you travel a lot and need something to survive bangs in your carry-on luggage, then this would also be a good choice. But, of course, even rugged devices fail, so don’t forget to have another backup!

    Great Performance Rugged Protection

Samsung makes high quality, high performance storage products and I’ve used their internal SSD drives for several years so I really looked forward to trying a Samsung external SSD. The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB external SSD comes boxed with 2 usb cables and some paperwork. The cables are a usb C to usb C cable and a usb A to usb C cable so you’re covered regardless of your system’s usb configuration. The drive itself is usb 3.2 interface so this to some extent dictates the performance you’ll get with the T7. More on that in a bit. Spec wise the T7 is capable of sequential read/write speeds of up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s. Inside is a 1gb NVMe. It’s wrapped in a rugged rubbery feeling case designed to provide IP65 protection against water and dust. The case is also rated to protect the drive from nearly a 10 foot drop. Great peace of mind if you like me intend to take this drive on the road for work. The drive size is a perfect portable size measuring .5 inches tall by 2.3 inches wide by 3.47 inches long. The T7 has a grippy rubbery feel and has ridges for greater hold in your hand. While the case design makes for great protection and great grip, the rubbery material is a bit of a dust magnet. Upon connecting the drive to usb you’re prompted to install the software which allows you to password protect your drive. I was ready to check out the drive performance. The Samsung T7 drive is a usb 3.2 generation 2 drive so I benchmarked the drive using a generation 2 usb C port and I got 1,060 MB/s read and 1,027 MB/s write speeds. I then benchmarked using a generation 2 usb A port and got very similar performance with 1,082 MB/s read and 1,019 MB/s write speeds. These speeds are right in line with the drives specifications and offers impressive performance which is perfect for transferring large files quickly and editing right on the drive. I would point out that you can still use the drive with usb 3.2 generation 1 ports but at a performance hit. Here speeds drop by about half but honestly that’s not horrible if you only have generation 1 ports on your system. The Samsung T7 Shield does not disappoint. Great performance in a rugged package. Highly recommended.

Water Resistant Samsung SSD – Silicone Coating

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This Samsung T7 Shield SSD is slightly larger than my older Samsung T5 SSD, and it also has a silicone coating, which I had not expected. The older Samsung SSD’s only have an aluminum case. This Samsung SSD is also water and dust resistant, which was not a feature of the older Samsung SSD’s. This Samsung SSD has an external shell that is wavy, which allow air to travel under the SSD when it is sitting on any surface, this allows it to dissipate more heat and stay cooler. This Samsung SSD comes with two connection cables, one USB-C to USB-C cable, and one USB-C to USB-A cable. I did a file transfer test, comparing this T7 SSD to a T5 SSD. I used 10 movies totaling around 20 gigabytes, and I transferred these 10 movies to my desktop, and then back to both SSD’s, and surprisingly, this Samsung T7 SSD had almost exactly the same transfer and read speeds as my Samsung T5 SSD. I had these two SSD’s connected using USB-C to USB-A cables, and so I guess this Samsung T7 must be connected using the USB-C to USB-C cable, in order to achieve the max read and write speeds. This is a very good quality external SSD, and I am rating it at 5 out of 5 stars.

The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB External USB 3.2 Gen 2 is a blazingly fast solid state storage device. Ruggedly encapsulated in a rubberized enclosure, this drive is easy to hold on to and is perfect for on-the-go use. Built to withstand a drop up to 9.8 feet, so throw it in your briefcase or purse, plug it in on the go; it is always ready to overachieve. It has an IP65 rating for protection from water and dust. With USB 3.2 Gen 2 and PCIe NVMe, this speed demon features sequential read/write speeds of up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s. It is built in your choice of 2) enormous capacities: 1TB or 2TB and packaged in 3) colors: Blue, Black or Beige. This solid state drive is compatible with Mac, PC, Android devices, even gaming consoles. I tested it on my Mac Pro and it was instantly recognized & ready for plug and play action. Most impressive to me was how I can edit 4K video on the fly with this drive, thanks to the ridiculously fast speed! CONCLUSION: I love this solid state mega drive! It does not slip out of your pocket or fall off of a portable desk if nudged, because of the rubberized case. It is the fastest, coolest running drive I have ever tested. It earns my Highest Recommendation!

This Samsung 1 TB external hard drive is exactly what I was looking for. I have a larger laptop that I carry for travels and I use at home so a smaller external hard drive is essential for my work. I’m able to save thousands of photos hundreds of videos plenty of music and a couple of movies. Again perfect for travel easy to set up literally just a plug-in locate on your computer and start saving. The color is cool but the texture of the hard drive makes for a good grip and small enough to store anywhere. I use it with a Asus laptop which also has Microsoft software. Other than more storage like a 2 TB or 3 TB there is literally nothing wrong with this device I will probably grab another at some point in time very easy to use and can be formatted for any laptop or a desktop. The charging cord or laptop desktop cord is a little short that is the only thing that I find difficult to use on the system and that it restricts how close the student has to be to your actual computer other than that it’s perfect

Small but mighty. 1 TB - perfect for safe photo storage. Appears rugged and has been easy to use. SSD, not HD - fast, sturdy. Check prices carefully on external drives - lots of variation between models and stores. I think "T7" is a branding name, not specifically and only for this device. It's amusing to think that this tiny drive holds more computer data than existed in the universe - or at least on earth - for perhaps the first 10-20-30 years that computers existed.

This is a nice, small and relatively fast SSD that comes with some pre-loaded software depending on your computer type and a couple of USB cabes (C and A). I connected it to a Mac and installed the software that was preloaded on the SSD. However, I was unable to use the software as it could never detect that the SSD was connected to my Mac. I tried unplugging/replugging, rebooting my Mac, deleting and reinstalling the software but all my efforts were in vein. Regardless, I wasn't going to be using that software (I don't even know what it does since I was never able to run it) so that didn't bother me too much. I reformatted the SSD using the Mac's Disk Utility program to APFS and ran a Black Magic Speed Test on it. I don't really have much to compare, so I'm not sure if those results are good or just okay or bad. I'm guessing it's pretty good because my subjective sense of the speed of the SSD when dragging files onto it is that it's plenty fast for my purposes. I don't have any hesitation in recommending this SSD.
