Stunning! - Worth the cost.

I've upgraded my DirecTv to 4K viewing when available - didn't realize my older dvr receiver couldn't pass through 4K. The picture on the 83" Sony Bravia A90J is simply amazing. I mounted the the TV using the Sanus - Premium Series Advanced Full-Motion TV Wall Mount for Most 42"-90" TVs up to 125 lbs - Black Brushed Metal Model:BLF328-B1 SKU:6331611. It too is awesome allowing me to easily move the TV about 2 feet closer to my seating area when viewing some content for a more immersive experience. Just make sure you catch the centers of the wall studs! If not, the TV will end up on the floor. A friend and I did the mounting of the TV. I do recommend having the Geek Squad do the TV mounting unless you're a DIY kind of person and comfortable with the task. The A90J is bright even during the day in our living room with 6 windows, (3) ~8-10 feet to the left, and (3) more just behind my seating area 10-12 feet from the screen depending how far out the TV is positioned using the wall mount. It was a bit pricey at $4999 but considering how much time you spend sitting in front of it I still see it as a good value. I will be purchasing the Geek Squad 5 year extended warranty as it includes all TV services in my home which is MUCH preferred to having to remove the TV from the wall and deliver the the massive TV to a Sony service center hours away. It is worth noting the in home Geek Squad insurance kicks in after the Sony 1 year warranty expires meaning the in home service is for years 2-5. The insurance can be purchased in the first 60 days after purchase, and paid all at once or buy the month. I still need to hook up my Yamaha reliever and Polk speakers to the TV. Once completed I'll have a Dolby Atmos speaker system which will greatly enhance my viewing experience. Today I purchased the Sonance - MAG Series 8" 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers (Pair) - Paintable White Model:MAG8R SKU:6342750 - which will complete my Dolby Atmos speaker setup. The Sonance speakers, regularly $999, were $700 off! I can't wait to enjoy the visual and audio experience together. As for now, the TV speakers are very good on their own. If you want the best, I definitely recommend the Sony - 83" Class A90J Series OLED 4K UHD Smart Google TV.

If You Like the A90J, You're Going to Love the 83"

Owned for 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The quality of this tv is opulent - both visually and audibly, and it lives up to the legendary status critics have been saying in recent months since its release. The black levels are the deepest I've ever seen on any device, and the brightness can light up an entire room. Movies are crisp and sharp with good motion, and PS5 games play just fine without the VRR (for now). I've attached 1tb hard drives and USB flashdrives, and the media file formats work just fine. Although it does take a while for the tv to learn the various file formats you feed it, it does so without a problem. The sound quality is by far the best I've heard from a television right out of the box and needs no tweaking (in my opinion), however if your wondering if it needs a supplemental soundbar to add depth and layers to the sound, it does not. And although the Google interface is "different", its not to be under-estimated in its versatility and ease of use. The 83 inch version does give the viewer an unbelievable cinematic experience and stimulates the senses to captivate and envelop you, so if you're going to buy a television in 2021, or a "Forever TV" as I call mine, this is the one to buy.

After purchasing this 83 inch Sony tv, I gave my dad our 10 year old 55 inch Sony tv. As you can see I am a fan of Sony. Why? Well Sony makes quality tvs. None of my Sony tvs ever broke down. If I had to use only one word to describe this 83 inch Sony tv I would say AMAZING! You won't be disappointed.

For two reasons: 1. They did not offer any television in their 2023 lineup that made it worth buying a new model year TV (why spend $1,000 more on an A80L when it represents absolutely no new technology) 2. The quality control of their products. To start the review: When you pull the trigger on buying an expensive 80+” television you want it to be perfect on several levels. This has been one of the most annoying experiences of purchasing a television I’ve ever had. Thankfully Best Buy has a great return/exchange policy. In all fairness I don’t know if some of the problems have arisen from Best Buy’s poor storage of their televisions. Also when you’re talking about an 80+” television it’s not as simple as just throwing it in your car and swapping it at the store. I’m on my 3rd A90J in as many weeks. Each has had major panel problems and defects. Sadly the 2nd was the best of the three and now I think I’m stuck with the third as I’m too tired to swap out yet another. All have had pretty serious dse/banding, and no I didn’t go looking for it. I noticed it within 1 day of getting the television watching bright movie content. 2 A90Js in a row have had a hard vertical line in the middle of the screen and the right side is noticeably darker. I don’t know if this is a byproduct of Sony’s manufacturing process of large TVs, but the 3rd tv also has a prominent vertical band on the left side of the screen. Again you only really notice it watching bright video content. And overall it’s less “hard” on the new TV Buuut the picture quality is worse on the new tv. I mean shockingly so. The overall quality is worse, motion clarity is waaay worse, and there is noticeably more dot noise, but it doesn’t seem to be content related, it’s like the pixels are having issues. The best way I can describe it would be to say despite the TVs all being A90Js, the third seems like it’s running a processor with a few less cores. The TV software is archaic and doesn’t support easy access to VRR. Now on to the positives: inky beautiful blacks, bright colors, truly great playback of native 4k+ content. Great video resolution and performance. It’s a phenomenal TV, if you play the panel and processor lottery and get a good one. In my experience with this purchase no two A90Js look or perform quite the same. So be aware you are gambling a bit with the panel and performance. Sadly I’ve been a loyal Sony customer for 20+ years, but this may mark the last Sony TV that I purchase unless they start stepping up to the competition and either introducing new technology, refining the user interface, and/or giving their customers some reason to not leave the brand.

Image The range of colors and their accuracy is stunning. I’ve never seen such lifelike flesh tones before. The image is both brighter and darker. I thought my plasma TV had great blacks, but these blacks are much darker. In addition to darker darks, the highlights are brighter than my plasma TV, they sparkle. The images show more detail (hair, fabric) and at the same time the color gamut and range of brightness makes the scenes seem more real. HDR and 4K (UHD) work. The size of the screen helps tremendously. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE ) recommends sitting at a distance where the screen fills up a minimum of 40° of your field of vision for a good experience watching movies. We sit 8-feet from the screen. To get 40° requires a screen around 83-inches wide. Picture Settings One issue that I haven’t been able to resolve is that some HDR movies have deep shadows that are too dark. All the reviews that I’ve read online say to use “Custom” for picture settings to get the best image. I’ve played with “Custom” setting a lot, and have concluded that for me (all I watch is movies) the best preset seems to be “Cinema”. Conclusion: The best image I’ve ever seen. Note: I didn't rate sound quality because I'm using an AV Receiver and a full surround sound system for sound, not the TV.

I never liked the muddy, washed-out pictures on LED-LCD sets, so when I upgraded from my old plasma I definitely wanted an OLED. Blacks are absolutely BLACK, not dark grey. Since it's installed in a darkened room, highlights are plenty bright, and with it's integral heatsink, it's supposed to be one of the brightest OLEDs out there. I surprised how much 4K content is available online. Upscaled HD looks good, too. I'm eager to try out using the screen as a center channel speaker once I get my AV receiver set up. There have been reports of some problems with the LG-supplied panels on the online forums, but mine is fine, and people are reporting that Sony is swapping in new TVs no problem.

The new Sony XR processor combined with the addition of the aluminum heatsink on the A90J utilized by Panasonic in their flagship OLEDs and this large 83” size makes for quite the TV experience. The depth of image, brightness and highlights are amazing. The shadow detail handling is great with very little noise or flashing with near blacks. This is also the first time an OLED of this size is offered at an “affordable” price. The only other OLED that’s larger than 77” before 2021 is the 88” LG 8K OLED and that’s $30,000! I know the price is high but to put it in perspective, just a few years ago, a 77” OLED with inferior picture processing cost 10k. Now you have the best and brightest OLED ever made in a large size for less and it’ll only drop in price as the year goes on. I’ve been through a lot of TVs and burned a lot of money being an A/V enthusiast. And this set right here is a long term keeper. My pockets will be happy for the next few years. My wife….. not so happy about the purchase but hey, you only live once lol.

Extremely Gorgeous Picture

Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Its a wonderful TV and every time I turn on watch movies or TV shows especially HD and Dolby Vision my heart is like “wow” and sings a happy song. This beauty ended up in my house after returning four different high end TVs from most famous brands. I spent 5 grand and I still said money extremely well spent. Picture quality, brightness and sound quality all are superior. The reason I took one star away for two reasons, first the bottom viewing part is almost one inch sans picture (last pic attached)I dont know why but all of these A 90J TVs are like that, not that huge thing but When I paid this much I want picture out of every corner. Second thing that really bothers me is that this TV is hooked up to my Samsung sound bar, woofer and Bluetooth speakers. Everytime I turn it one it doesn't just automatically goes to ARC instead I have to turn the TV off and back on for it to work or I turn sound system on with the Samsung remote. I think someone else did mention this issue too in the past with Sony TVs, but since this TV is extremely marvelous in picture and in sound quality that I can live with this minor nuisance. And in the end I highly recommend this beauty to anyone who can afford and want to have near natural picture quality.

There seemed to be some power issues at install also, so I returned it for another A90J. Was equally underwhelmed, so I returned it for an LG G2. I find the LG to be significantly better. I know it’s only a matter of preference, but colors pop way more, blacks are blacker and I love that about the LG Picture detail is much better in dark scenes as well. Don’t is impressive, but for me, LG is better and more wow factor.

It’s richer, more natural color and the clarity delivered by its superior processor give it the edge over the comparable LG (which is very nice in its own right). The operating system is efficient and convenient as well. The 83 inch size may sound huge but actually fits and looks great in an average sized room. I paired mine with the Sony HT-A7000 7.1.2 soundbar, sub, and rear speakers. Looks and sounds fabulous.

Our initial purchase was the 65 inch Sony AJ 90 TV. Absolute stunning picture quality and you can’t imagine how black the TV can get. We moved the 65 inch to the bedroom and upgrade it to the 83 inch and could not be happier. Matched with a 7.2 surround system, we have a true home theater system.

I was nervous going from 8 k to 4 k but when you watched the two tvs side by side the oled gave that richness in color… and quality to me… I stared at them both for a while cause it was alot to spend 10k all together on a tv… but I’m happy with my purchase… it’s beautiful

I originally purchased the LG 86” 8K QNED and was disappointed with it’s pitch black home theater environment performance. Dirty screen effect, image artifacting, lack of detail in dark areas, blooming, etc. The A90J laughs at these obstacles and delivers the most brilliantly stunning image that has ever graced the inside of my home. But that quality doesn’t come without a pretty hefty premium. If you can afford this TV, you WILL NOT be disappointed. This is the benchmark that all other TVs should be compared against. It’s THAT GOOD. I almost feel guilty for owning a TV this breathtaking - truly spoiled.

The picture - color, contrast, detail and the smooth flow of motion in particular - are truly superb and the build quality seems to be first-rate. I'm very happy with the integration of Google TV and the Bravia Core app which came with a credit for 10 streaming 4K downloads. Using the eARC capability and the on-board Google TV, I've eliminated my Roku device and integrated the unit with our home audio and surround system while going from 4 remotes down to the one remote that came with the unit. In the first several days of use, I've found that I prefer the Google TV system after close to 10 years using some iteration of Roku, which I had been very happy with. It integrates perfectly with all of my preferred streaming apps and is a true home-run if you use YouTube TV which we recently switched to from DirecTV. I installed the unit myself with the help of a neighbor required only to lift the unit into place on a Sanus BLF328-B1 wall mount (also highly recommended).
