What was Scary in '58 Is Campy Fun Now

"The Blob" was considered quite scary in 1958, but even then it was more fun than anything else. The plot is thin, the story line is predictable, the acting is average at best. However, there is a sense that Steve McQueen in the lead role was going to be heard from again, and his girlfriend--Anita Corseaut--had potential. Both would move on to bigger success--McQueen to Superstardom, and Corseaut to "The Andy Griffith Show". This is a movie that was never designed for awards or critical praise, and it is still the same today as in 1958. It is, most of all, a fun science fiction romp in small town America and a Coke and popcorn film to watch on Saturday night.

This is the classic blob you remember, Steve McQueen is young, the story kinda hokey, little to no plot, but hey its a fun movie for Saturday. This is a clean transfer. Colors are bright and vivid. The sound is great for a movie of its age. Would highly recommend to any one who wants to stroll drown memory lane or has an open saturday afternoon.

This is my first horror film with my father. Steve McQueen, The Blob. No other film deserved an upgrade than this one. You watch one of Hollywood’s greatest actors. Picture fantastic, sound mind blowing for how old it is.

My wife and I enjoyed watching this sci-fi classic from our childhoods. It was especially enjoyable because of the high def remastering of this film and even more to see "Steven" McQueen in the movie that started him on his road to an illustrious career.

I saw this movie when it first came out and I was about 10. I had nightmares for quite some time. Now that I am an adult and watch the movie it is very enjoyable to watch. I find it a classic movie to own.

I couldn’t resist buying this old sci fi movie with Steve McQueen. He said it was a stinker, but who knew? It’s considered a classic.

A bona fide B-movie gem in a great package!

Criterion Collection has finally upgraded "The Blob" for Blu-ray disc. And while the upgrade adds no additional special features from the previous DVD version except for an essay in the included booklet, the HD transfer makes this film look more beautiful than ever. Shot outside the Hollywood system with a star-making performance from Steve McQueen, "The Blob" rightfully was a smash at the box office, quite a feat for an independently-made, low-budget genre pic. The blob itself is not even close to menacing, but that -- along with a catchy theme song from a young Burt Bacharach -- is part of what makes this B-movie gem one of the quirkiest and most fun flicks of its ilk. Highly recommended -- includes an excellent audio commentary among the special features.

It creeps and leaps and glides and slides onto blu

Irvin S. Yeaworth's 1958 drive-in classic 'The Blob' makes it way to blu-ray for the first time ever, receiving the royal treatment from The Criterion Collection. The film looks and sounds fantastic on blu-ray. The supplements are good, but a little lacking for a Criterion release. The film itself, of course, is a real treat. A cheesy, gloriously fun treat. It stars Steve McQueen in his first leading role and features a giant gelatinous alien creature that rolls around absorbing people. If that's not enough to make you add it to your cart right now, then I don't know what is.

Another gem from Criterion! The Blob is a classic sci-fi film about a small town overrun by a seemingly mindless blob who consumes inanimate and animate objects while growing in size as it does! A teenage Steve McQueen (of Bullitt fame) stars as the young punk who muct warn others and stop The Blob from destroying the entire town!

    Another Criterion Blu-ray

Criterion's been re-releasing a lot of the old spine #'s on blu-ray at the rate of 1-2 per month. As the reviewer before said, the transfer's not mind-blowing, but I still feel like it's a good improvement.
