Needed some advanced features without breaking the bank. This Uniden radar detector will does not disappoint. Used it while on a 630 miles road trip that include a very spirited i must say jaunt at the Tail of the Dragon and without out this hidden gem i would have been busted for over 70 in a 30. Great job Uniden.

So far, so good. It definitely has a lot of “false” alerts. The GPS would be a great feature to have, but definitely not worth an extra $100!! The unit itself is an acceptable size and the display is nice. I also purchased the rear view mirror mount for it.

    Top performing radar detector

This radar detector has outstanding performance (better than anything else out there besides the Uniden R3 which is an R1 with GPS), excellent false alert filtering, is undetectable by radar detector detectors, has a color OLED display that can be set to many different colors, and is receiving regular firmware updates and improvements from Uniden, making the detector even better and better over time. I consider this to be the best highway & backroad radar detector under $300. It will do a great job of giving you plenty of advanced warning while also filtering out those annoying radar based blind spot monitoring systems in many modern cars. (Hondas, Acuras, and GM vehicles will punch through the filters as they do with every other radar detector.) However, it offers one of the best filters around, plus the ability to control the sensitivity if you're getting too much performance, heh. If you do a lot of driving on not only the highway but also in the city, I would recommend you take a look at its big brother the R3. The R3 does everything the R1 can do, but it also adds a GPS chip which is extremely helpful. You can teach it what's a false alert (just double press the mute button) when you're near a speed sign or a drugstore's automatic door opener and it will learn and filter those false alerts for you in the future. It can automatically mute the detector at low speeds when you're stuck in traffic or sitting at a stop light. The R1 can't do that so you'll be busy hitting the mute button a lot in town. The R3 can also alert you to redlight camera and speedcameras as well, thanks to the GPS chip. However, if you don't need these extra features or you don't mind hitting the mute button when you're in urban areas, save the $100 and go for the R1. If you drive primarily on the highway, if you're often in rural areas where you don't care as much about stationary falses and you want to focus on performance, or you love spirited drive down backroads and again are looking for the highest level of protection to keep your driver's license safe, pick up an R1.

    Uniden R-1 Rocks! Scores Near-Perfect 10

Uniden R-1 Extreme Long-Range Laser/Radar Detector. Most powerful and effective radar detector I have ever owned. Stealth, high performance, and easy to deploy. Has alerted to both laser and radar with plenty of advance notice to check speed. There is nothing that I don't love about the Uniden R-1. Sticky mount dash mat keeps detector where it's placed on dash. (Extra $5 appx.) Also added four (4) silicone/rubber feet by Shepherd to elevate the unit slightly in order to not muffle the speaker which is located on the underside of the unit. Works great, keeps the R-1 in place. Buy it NOW, without regrets. Live it, love it, own it. The Road is Yours!

Quick thoughts: This is one of the most sensitive radar detectors on the market. It outperforms detectors that cost twice as much. The radar unit itself is compact and super lightweight. The case is made from plastic but feel tough enough to last for years. The only thing missing is a rear facing antennae which is useful if a cop is coming up behind you with his radar on. However, the sensitivity is still strong enough to warn of radar from behind you when that occurs. It just won't do so as quickly as a dedicated rear facing antennae would. Even missing this component I still chose this radar over one's with it. The forward sensitivity is incredible and will warn you long before other detectors will. Review: In the box are a few mounting options to use including the usual suction cups. I would replace the suction cups with better ones though as mine kept falling off the windshield. This wasn't an issue when I used different suction cups. Also included is a carrying case, mounting hardware for windshield mount, and the 12v plug. The 12v plug also has a usb input so you can charge your phone with it. Nice touch. Custom options: You can program this detector to work how you want it to. You can choose different display colors, different sounds for each radar and laser band (x, k, ka, laser...etc) and choose what bands you want the detector to alert to. For example I turned off X band because no agency in my area uses it. This helps minimize false alerts. Blind Spot Monitor Sensitivity and filtering: This is one of most influential areas when choosing a detector today. The issue lies in the blind spot monitoring systems in new cars. They use K band on the same frequency range as police radar. This can cause a lot of false alerts as a car passing you with blind spot monitors may set off the detector. Uniden has done an amazing job with filtering out blind spot monitors so your detector won't be confused by them. It isn't perfect and from time to time you may still have a false alert from one. However, compared to my previous detector (Beltronics STI) it's like night and day. I use to get false alerts from every car that passed with blind spot monitors. With the Uniden I may a handful on a several hour highway trip. It's amazing how well it works. Uniden also provides updated software for this radar somewhat frequently to provide even better filtering. You download it from their website. Software / firmware updates: Yes, this radar detector is capable of being updated by you, the user, at home. Uniden listens to their customers and regularly provides enhancements to their radar detectors. Beyond this they also update how their detectors work so you don't have to buy a new one every year just to stay current. Just download the most recent software when it is released and it'll keep you as current as possible withing the limitations of the hardware. There are videos online that outline how to update the detector. It isn't difficult. Do I need a radar detector when I use Waze: Yep. My last trip down I-95 had 3 separate speed traps that set off my radar detector before I could even see the cop cars. None of these were marked on Waze yet. The cars just ahead of me were stopped but not me, I slowed down well in advance thanks to this detector. Waze isn't always reliable. Who needs this and final thoughts: Everyone that travels in a state where radar detectors are legal. It's not crazy expensive and it works quite well. Do keep in mind that the sensitivity of this unit is extreme and it may give you a warning a mile or so in advance. This is great but can be confusing in town as you don't know where the radar is coming from, as in which direction. Only a few detectors provide arrows to indicate radar direction but they aren't as sensitive as this unit. The extra warning from the sensitivity on the R1 and R3 are worth losing the arrows in my opinion. I would highly recommend this radar to anyone looking for one. It's the only one I would purchase right now regardless of price range.

This radar detector is very reliable. Long range detection is long range! It gives you plenty of warning. This is the first Uniden i have owned, its very comparable to a beltronics in its range. I thought it was cool that you have a lot of choices in colors of display. You can turn on and off alk the different bands . I wish they made a USB charging cable instead of just a cigarette lighter adapter.

I have had the Uniden-R1 for over a year now. It's a good detector, though can really be annoying. It picks up a lot of false signals. I noticed that if there is an actual police present, the system would voice out in addition to the type of signal, the frequency number. With a lot of false signals, the system would only voice out the type of signal and not the frequency number. Be careful though. It is not always the case.

Had an older escort x50 before this and it was getting false signals from every newer vehicle I passed so figured I’d get a new one. After doing research for awhile I went with the R1 and couldn’t be happier. I though it was getting false signals a few time, but turns out it reads really far away. Still reads auto doors and stuff like that, but this thing does great on weeding out blind spot signals.

Had many detectors in the past but this one picked up radar 3/4 of a mile away and when i went by the polce car i found that he had radar facing away from me. Also, it kept my detector going off for another 1/4 mile from behind me! Recommend to shut off X & K bands and only leave the KA & Laser bands turned on. The windshield suction cup mount is perfect!

Toyed with this for awhile before pulling the trigger. Suddenly my drive to work has increased tremendously and wanted alittle security while making the drive. Excellent filtering system and excellent range, moderate price but from my research ranks up there with the best. Certainly saved me several times with only a month in use. Worth it

Uniden R1. Picks up super long range and cannot be detected by radar detector detectors.. Great deal for the money.. I use the WAZE app in conjunction so I do not need to spend the extra money for the R3 with GPS. It is a great tool.

I purchased this detector after using the escort for many years. The Uniden seems to have better range than the Escort. The only negative I see is the strange sounds it makes for the different radar bands.

I bought this because I was taking a driving trip to Seattle and knew I would be driving in unfamiliar areas. This saved me from getting so many tickets, because I do love to drive over the speed limit. I love that you can change the color of the text, mute the volume quickly, and change it from city to highway driving, along with many other features.

It’s a good radar, however it sometimes gives false signals. Yet, when there is a patrol vehicle it does a good job.
