Great premium media player that I wish I was willing to keep.
This product has a great interface and their movie store is awesome. The quality that you get from this is the same if not sometimes better than 4K/Blu-ray discs. But… the price is not at a sweet spot enough for me to keep it. If this was priced around $2500 (for the 1tb of storage it comes with) I would keep it without questioning my purchase.
I decided to just go all in on my NAS server. I hate collecting disc (they take up too much room and time ripping) this is why I purchased this device, but I can’t convince myself to keep it at the current price. Maybe if I had a lot of money to just blow… then maybe…
Hopefully they’re able to make the price more convincing in the future.

Couldn’t be easier to set up. The Strato V comes well-packaged — even covered by a logo’d fabric bag, which gives it a nice, high-end unboxing touch. Kaleidescape even includes all of the cables you’ll need to connect the Strato V to your system — including a THX-certified HDMI cable! The most complicated setup step is getting a Kaleidescape account and activating your Strato V, but even that was dead-simple! The most disappointing part of the Strato V experience is that the software and UI/UX feels dated and in need of some love. The well-known Kaleidescape wall of box art looks great — even though you only see it when you browse the Kaleidescape store. The screens that especially look dated and like an afterthought are the controls you see when you go to start a title or while a title is playing. It honestly looks like something from Windows95! I’m also underwhelmed by the mobile app-based remote control options. The mobile app-based controls for AppleTV are significantly better and more elegantly designed than the mobile app-based remote from Kaleidescape — I really miss the AppleTV buttons to jump 10 seconds forward or backward in the playing content. The closest similar option in Kaleidescape is to go back to the start of the current “chapter” which is often a jump back of 5-10 minutes rather than a quick 10 seconds. On a positive note, the Kaleidescape team seems very open to feature requests and feedback, and I’ve already shared all of these observations with them to hopefully fix/improve in future software updates. But all of these complaints are pretty minor. In general, I’m thrilled with the big step up in movie viewing experience of the Strato V over the AppleTV 4K. In particular, the lossless, uncompressed audio from the Strato V makes all other streaming options — AppleTV 4K, Netflix, Roku, etc — seem pretty awful by comparison. I especially notice much more bass and LFE audio details that must be dropped out entirely on streamers that use compressed audio. One other note — if you don’t have a 1Gbps download speed home network, you’ll probably be pretty frustrated with the Strato V experience because it may take you up to an hour or even more to download any titles. My network is 1Gbps and it takes ~10-15 minutes to download any title, which is quick enough for me to go get some snacks and have the title downloaded when I get back. That reminds me of one final gripe — the Strato V ships with a 1Gbps network card, so, even if you were willing to pay for a faster home network, it will be capped at 1Gbps. At this price point and in this day and age, the Strato V should have a 10Gbps netork card (or support later upgrading to that speed by the owner). I’m fairly certain that both the Strato V’s 1Tb drive size and the 1Gbps network speed limit are deliberate decisions to make the Strato V user experience frustrating enough to encourage upgrading to a Terra Prime server, which has more space and a faster 2.5 Gbps network speed.

This product not only met, it exceeded my expectations. The quality of the video and audio, the ease of use, and the easy integration made it the best audio/visual piece of equipment that I’ve ever bought for my home theater. I have had many high end pieces of home theater equipment and been disappointed in a good number of them. Bravo and well done on making a premium product that actually lives up to the hype.

New user. Honest first impression. I have a decent theater with large speakers quad subs, parasound amps, etc. It’s a good amount of money wrapped up in sound and projector. I was using only my Apple tv, trying to hold out for Apple to do better with audio, or so I was hoping? Was I getting good sound with Apple? How about surround decoders, with Apple I was limited to some basic version of atmos. Told it was all compressed and “some” people might hear a difference. What about 4K blue ray? Was I going to go back to physical media and buy the player and such? I decided to buy the V from Best Buy and hear for myself. First, it’s not a streamer, I knew that but wanted to make note. Second the gui works, it’s not flashy but the info on the movies is good, still I think some aspects of the software “feel” old and out of touch. Ok the movies and the sound. Wow! I’m not an audiophile, I was just looking to get a more theatrical movie experience. The V delivers! If you have a sound system that is atmos or dtsx, not a sound bar, you will love the sound. Streaming is flat and limited separation with weak clarity. The V addresses all of that! It turned my theater into a much better audio experience! If you want better sound than streaming, buy and try. If you have a capable sound system this will be a great investment! Picture, I have a decent projector but the image on my projector did not gain a lot. It is better than Apple TV, but not the wow I reveived from my audio. I expected this. My goal was better sound and a way to have digital movies. This fit my situation perfectly. Is it expensive still, yes. But for me it was time to hear what my much bigger investment in my theater could deliver. Perfect! The app is OK, the remote is ok. I hope they work on the app and phone controls to enhance the user experience.

The player is incredible. The UI is really good. Set up was incredibly simple and it’s definitely the best quality of video and audio for 4K movies. It only takes about 10 minutes to download a movie and you can do it with the player directly or through the app. The app can also be used as the remote and works perfect. Definitely worth the money if you have a home theater.

Held off on this for a long time, always reading the reviews that said its not worth it. Ignore those reviews. Picture quality is amazing. My 14 year old walked into the basement when we were watching “Den of Thieves 2” and asked if we had changed the TV to something ‘expensive’. We are using a 2024 98” TCL QM8 and a sonos surround, fwiw, not a slouchy system but not a 97” OLED either. Picture was good, but Kaleidescape made it great. Makes me want to watch more movies, even so-so ones, if they have 4k and Dolby Vision. It gets even better when you hear the sound. This is what Atmos is supposed to sound like. Swore to myself I’d live with the Strato V by itself and not by storage, but had to break that vow a day later. Get the Strato V: you won’t be disappointed.

Set up is very simple. Video quality is amazing but the realtreat for me is the audio quality, which will blow you away. Its what your home theater setup is sitting and waiting for: More information to display and send out to you.

This product is excellent. For those who are new to Kaleidescape, there are some key considerations for this product that must be understood.
If you have a basic 55" or smaller 4K TV using only integrated speakers or a sound bar, I am not sure you will find this product of much value based on the cost.
The benefits of this product align more for those that have a larger display and home theater that includes a multitude of speakers (5.4.2, 7.1, 5.1.2, 7.4.2, etc.) A/V receiver, etc.
The reason is that the selling point on the product is its ability to output hi fidelity sound and picture quality, equal to or better than what you would get from a 4K disc.
When streaming movies or content from applications such as Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime you get compressed audio and sometimes limited video reproduction. If you are only using the integrated speakers from your TV, I am not sure you will be able to tell the difference.
Another benefit of this platform is the ability to attain 4K disc content, months before the physical disc are available. This differs from AppleTV, Amazon Prime, etc., giving you the opportunity to buy 4K content from their services in that you will not get the full lossless audio copy of the content. You will get the compressed audio version. So if you have a multitude of speakers, high end A/V receiver, larger than 55" screen, your copy of a movie will not match what you see or hear on the same movie from your Kaleidescape download.
The strato V has been a game changer for my home theater. Previously I had to buy 4K discs in order to get the best sound and picture out of my system. It is costly, but depending on your setup, it can be very well worth it.
