I chose the Polar Loop as I wanted an activity monitoring bracelet that had connectivity with a Heart Rate monitor. FitBits, Jawbones did not have that capability. Also, Polar is known for the quality of their HRMs. It's also stylish and comfortable. People always ask me what it is/what it does and comment how cool it looks. I've recommended this to my friends and they ended up buying it themselves and loving it too! Polar should pay me. LOL.

I'd read great things about the Polar Loop, and decided to give it a try. Upon purchasing and taking home, I was sure to read the instructions - several times - as one has to cut the band to make it fit. Polar does have a replacement policy, but who wants to use those? Needless to say, instructions and wrist measurement were simple. The device is easy to use once fitted, and provides accurate detail. Especially with the heart monitor (I've a separate review for the H7), every detail is tracked. With the H7, battery life goes down to 2~3 days. Without the H7, the device lasts for 5. I like how the band is waterproof, so I can wake up and shower and not be bothered. Readouts on active and inactive times were pretty much on the mark, with occasional exceptions - which were few. Oh, do not fit this band on your arm that you intend to use a computer mouse with. Or swap wrists and remember to update the program you're using it on the other wrist. Yup, the application (Windows, Mac OS X for desktops, iOS and Android mobile devices) will ask which arm your band is on. Accuracy is a nice touch. The app shows how often you're lying down, sitting, standing, moving, rapidly moving. The results are definitely solid, though using a recumbent bike isn't going to get you anywhere - in terms of seeing activity, unless you are wearing a heart monitor. There is no sensor for stair-climbing, but it's a minor nitpick. Overall, I am impressed by the unit and its accuracy, especially with the heart monitor.

Polar Loop - feedback from a fitness professional

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I am a 22 year experienced personal trainer and a technology fanatic. I've researched many other activity trackers but the only device that caught my attention was the Polar Loop. Today everybody wants to expend calories but it seems consumers are being misled by features lacking true merit. As a fitness expert, I see that caloric expenditure cannot be accurately measured by a motion sensor alone nor can it be determined by the type of exercises you perform. There are too many variables to consider such as resistance and speed of the movement thus the fitness level of the user. Although a few activity trackers utilize the measurement of skin temperature and skin moisture that may seem interesting,I still think it's still a matter of years before any company can develop a feasible working formula. But, I know there are at least three scientifically proven methods that will work. One method is done by measuring your oxygen uptake OR carbon dioxide out-take. The other is by measuring heart rate. Unfortunately today you can only find oxygen measuring masks at a specialized physician,a high profile athlete facility or cardiologist. But with the Polar Loop; it is currently the only activity tracker compatible with a chest heart rate monitor. I've had my Loop for about a week and I'm testing the Loop through many variations of exercise routines and applications. Keep in mind that the Polar Loop will function and track without the optional chest heart rate strap, but it will function similar to many of the other activity trackers such as the Nike Fuel Band, Jawbone Up, Fitbit Force etc. If you pair it with the Polar H7 heart rate strap it improves calorie expenditure tracking significantly. I really mean SIGNIFICANTLY. I don't intend to wear both pieces all the time because that would be such an inconvenience but wearing the strap during workouts and recreation is ideal and clearly you can see a difference in your activity reports. Attached is a screen shot of one of the graph reports that was mocked up. I added the workout information just to reflect how the heart rate monitor makes a difference from exercise to exercise. Remember if you purchase an activity tracker that detects motion alone, it will count activity based on repetitions. As you can see, I performed very minimal reps in this workout. So, using a motion sensor alone; If I wave at someone for 50 minutes in duration, it would probably show more calories expended than my intense heavy workout. right? Also, I've included a VIDEO TIP for swimmers that wish to use the loop in the water.

A step up from the Fitbit Flex

I purchased this to replace a Fitbit Flex that has stopped on me 3 times. Things I like about this tracker: easy to read display, tracks your sleep without having to put into a "sleep"mode, sets goals based upon your activity level, will track your heart rate with a HRM, the band is so much better than the Fitbit Flex, and the charger is so much better than the Flex.

Fantastic waterproof fitness band perfectly priced

This is a fantastic, completely waterproof fitness band. Although it is lacking some of the bells and whistles of other brands, it is perfect for my needs and was a great price point. It tracks more info than I really need. My mom has a different brand and she gets so frustrated when she realizes she she forgot to put hers back on after doing dishes. Not a problem for this band. It flawlessly handles swimming 2-3 times per week, showers, washing dishes, and weeks worth of snorkeling in salt water. I highly recommend this brand. I used price matching to get it for even less than the in-store list price. I consider it a fantastic investment. The one thing I would change would be for the watch display to stay on all the time although this would increase how often it would need charged. The charging is super fast and never takes very long, which amazes me. With iPhone updates, it synches much more easily with my phone.

I originally had went in with the intention to buy a Fitbit, having never heard of the Loop. I ended up buying this because of the option to add a heartrate monitor. It is significantly cheaper than the Fitbit HR and I love that my HR monitor connects at the gym. The unit does seem to lose charge fairly quickly and if you let it die completely you will need to re-sync it with your computer. Which is not a problem if you are at home, but inconvenient if you are charging it out and about. The charger is specific to this product so if you lose it you can't just easily go and pick one up. Overall it does exactly what I need it to do and I feel like the price is great.

    Decent activity tracker

I think this is a pretty decent activity tracker. I was more interested in the Polar H7 heart rate monitor and decided to go ahead and get an activity tracker as well. I ultimately returned the product, but that doesn't mean I didn't like the product. It does the same stuff as Fitbits and other activity trackers, so I will talk about the things that mattered most to me. 1) The Look (5/5): I really, really like the look of this band. In my opinion, it is the best looking activity tracker on the market. A lot of people complain about cutting the band, but it's pretty easy. I didn't mind having to cut it because the clasp gives it such an awesome look and it fills very secure on the wrist. You don't have to worry about it like other trackers out there where fastening eventually stops working and you return home to find your wrist empty. The clasp and the chrome accents make it look much more expensive than all the other trackers on the market. You could wear this with you to most places and not feel like its clunky and clashes with your fashion choices ;-) 2) The Display (4/5): I feel the display is okay...The LED display shows up really well in both sunlight and nighttime, but the display is kind of clunky to me. You don't have all the information displayed on the screen that you get on say the Garmin VivoSmart which is OLED which doesn't show up as well outside. I personally would prefer to see more information. I didn't like having to wait for steps to scroll and then the number of steps. This is minor, but I like other trackers having fewer screens to scroll through. 3) Inactivity Alerts (4/5): Most of the time I didn't notice the inactivity alerts. I see that the Polar Loop 2 has added vibration for this which is nice. It works with your phone though, so if you have your bluetooth on and it's connected to your phone, your phone will vibrate which is how I usually noticed them. It's still a nice idea though. 4) Activity vs Steps (4/5): I love that this activity tracker is ACTIVITY based rather than steps based. There is an activity bar that you must fill up to meet your goal that day. You can do an hour of something high intensity like jogging or two hours of something moderate like walking. I really like that. I tried a fitbit before and felt bad because I couldn't get in my 10,000 steps even when I did other workouts. There is a downside to the activity bar though IMO. I think that there should be more activity levels for people who are just trying to move from being a couch potato to someone who is more active. Going from being a couch potato to two hours of walking or one hour of jogging is hard. I felt it was very difficult to fill the bar. I don't have two hours after work on Tuesday to walk. There was a day when I did an hour of strength training (moderate), walked (moderate), AND did yoga (low-moderate) and I still didn't get to 100% activity. For the average person who is not an athlete or a fitness person in the gym everyday, I think 1 hour of moderate intensity activity (not high) should be a good amount of exercise. I feel that the bar should adjust based on your previous activity levels. This is more encouraging than everyday failing to meet your activity level. So while I much prefer the activity level approach of Polar to the steps based approach of Fitbit and all the other bands, I feel that Fitbit is more in step (get it :-) with casual users who want to be a little more active whereas Polar is aimed at people who are really active or workout hard everyday. Hard is a keyword there. If you don't do something high intensity like running, you have to workout for two hours! 5) Heart Rate Monitor Pairing(2/5): This is ultimately what led me to return this device. I was mostly interested in a heart rate monitor. After getting the heart rate monitor, I went a little fitness gadget crazy and decided to get an activity tracker to go with it. I bought the Polar H7 heart rate monitor. I thought that the loop would work similar to the Polar FT4 watch and be able to start and stop a training session. The clunkiness of the loop working with the HRM is why I decided to return it. It didn't have as much control as I expected, and it drained the battery. You can start a session with the polar loop just fine. As a matter of fact starting sessions happens too easily. Sometimes I would start sessions without meaning to. If you have the HRM on and press the button, it starts a new training session. There's no confirmation. It just starts. That's not really that big of a deal, but the most annoying thing to me was that you could not stop a training session with your loop. There's no button to press or hold. You have to take the chest strap off right after you finish working out. What if I'm at the gym and I do a class, but then I want to run back and I want to have a training session for each activity? Well you have to take it off after the class and then put it on before your run.... and then take it off when you get back to stop it. Not very convenient. A lot of people don't seem to mind this because I've never seen complaints about it, but that was one of the main reasons I got the loop. I though I would be able to start and stop training sessions just like you can with the Polar FT4 and also have a daily activity tracker. This is inconvenient, but using the loop with the HRM drains the battery. You will have to recharge your loop everyday if you pair it with the HRM while you workout. I eventually chose to only use the loop for activity tracking and to use my phone for starting and stopping training sessions. The Polar Beat app is very good about that. 6) The App (3/5): I felt that the app was lacking as someone coming from having a Fitbit. I love being able to see all my activity. I think automatic sleep tracking, good looking visualizations, and historical data are the main reasons people are buying activity trackers rather than just using their phones or basic pedometers. These are three things that the Polar Flow app is not that good at. The app just doesn't show much data when it comes to daily activity. If you use the H7 heart rate monitor, you will have really awesome data in your activity log, but when it comes to daily activity like steps, sleep, calories burned and so on, the app is not as nice as other apps out there like Fitbit and Jawbone Up. It shows that you walked 3000 steps and that's it. In other activity tracking apps, you would have a column chart showing how many steps you walked per hour or so. It tells you how many hours you slept and how many calories you burned, but it just shows the numbers. Also the app is not as visually appealing as the Fitbit app. There's an activity dial that shows a clock and your activity levels throughout the day which is nice. I really like that approach which other apps don't do, but the different shades of blue kind of run together. Why not use completely different colors? So basically the app shows all the data you care about just not in depth, but if you pair this with a HRM the workout activity log is pretty nice. I also felt the sleep tracking was way off. It would usually only record 3-4 hours of sleep and lots of the times at night when I was asleep would appear as I were sitting down so it was not counted towards my sleep. tl;dr Most of my gripes are not really that big of a deal. I would still recommend this product. It's just for me I didn't really need an activity tracker. I just figured it would be nice to have something that gets my daily activity and logs my sleep that could also control my HRM, but the inability to stop training sessions, the sleep tracking being off, and the app not really having nice visualizations kind of helped me decide that while this device was okay, it wasn't nice enough to keep considering I only needed a heart rate monitor and my phone already counts my steps.

I purchased this fitness band because it stated it is waterproof. I swim everyday and so far so good....works like a charm! Also logs steps, calories and shows the time. Fairly easy to size, although I needed to make it smaller that the size guide showed (I cut little pieces off at a time as to not make a mistake). I charge it every 2-3 days, and it holds about a week of memory before you need to download info to your computer. I am very happy with this purchased!

The Polar loop has a great band that won't fall off as easy as other activity trackers on the market and it's waterproof. The display is great and shows your calories, steps, activity percentage, and the time! I have no trouble seeing the display in low or bright light. The only downside is that because the app is so new, it is not the most user friendly. Also, the iphone app will sync with MyFitnessPal but the android app will not. Overall, great product.

This technology is just starting, polar is a guarantee i have watches and they still work after years, polar loop Works. The battery can last a week depending on ur activity. Easy to pair with polar band, iphone and LA-fitness equipment. Under water battery drains really fast. I would like to be able to wear it on my ankle or pocket some days, but polar says the programming codes are not ready for that.. They want you to be seen wearing it i guess.. Plastic quality is great still after 3 months wearing it and swimming on salty watter and pool. This item will get obsolete soon with all the smart watches coming soon and all the promises they claim their products will have

Easy to use. Great app for iPhone. I ended up buying the heart monitor which is a great addition. The actual website is not that easy to use but I love the app on the phone. It would be nice if it had an area to add in the calories that you intake because it shows how much you have burned. It keeps me motivated throughout the day and very comfortable to wear...even at night. Great product and well worth the money.

This is really a good product. I have a Fitbit as well which I like but I really like seeing my status without having to get on an app via my phone or computer every time I want to see how many steps I took. I also love that it has a time feature for when i don't want to wear a watch. There is a big difference in how this records steps and such and I feel it might be more accurate than the Fitbit but that is just an opinion. The one thing I do not like is that it says the battery is good for around 5-6 days but not for me. Mine lasts about 3-4 tops. There was a little work to be done to get it to fit my wrist by having to cut the strap but it wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be. The only other thing there is that the sizing chart they give you isn't accurate and I had to cut more than what the chart said I should. All in all a great product with a decent app to sync to and really good looks. I choose this over my Fitbit even though I do like the Fitbit a lot.

Pros: Waterproof, can wear while swimming or diving through mud puddles. Watch-type clasp made of metal. Gives an in depth summary of your daily activity: hours lying down, standing, sitting, walking, running. You can journal on the website: weight, mood, workouts, etc. It alerts you when it thinks you need to move around and get some activity. It displays the time which is huge if you are going to be wearing this instead of a watch. Less stuff to wear on your wrist. Around the same pricing as competitors. It's fun to see how your sleep is going. Cons: A little bulky. No vibration functions. The app is okay. Syncing with the USB cord is more dependable than the Bluetooth function. Cutting with scissors is required for a custom fit. A little bit of watch-repair-like work. Summary: Everyone talks about FitBit a lot, likes it's the only sports band out there. The Polar Loop is a quality product. The waterproof alone may be the selling factor for you.

I love this tracker because of the LED display. I simply look down at my wrist and I know my activity level, calories burned, steps, time and heart rate if my HR monitor is on. That feature helps keep you motivated throughout the day. My husband and I compete daily to see who has more steps and who has more activity for the day. I lost 5 lbs in the 1st 3 weeks of having the loop.

Bought this particular fitness band based on online reviews that showed this band to be waterproof. I've used it in the water just fine. No problems there. But after a few weeks. I get about a day if that out of battery. No reviews mentioned short battery life like other brands, but I expected at least a week or more battery life. Bluetooth connection to iPhone is spotty. Does not always work, and says it may need a firmware update. So connection to computer is required, then no update is needed. I also expected more details on sleep habit, but only shows inactivity period, which could be any period of the day just sitting or resting. Also does not show any information about the inactivity. I read it showed sleep habits and quality of sleep. Neither is the case. You have to cut the band to fit your wrist, so hopefully your wrist will stay the same size for the life of the product and not get any bigger. Last thing, if I didn't expect better battery life and more info on sleep habit, it might be worth it. Should have bought the other band that's waterproof and can be worn during swimming.

I bought this because my wife had used one during a 10 week metabolic study and she liked it. In fact after the study was over, we each bought one. Provides basic info and the web site tracking is very nice. Does seem to be a motivator to do better ... Walk more, eat less, etc. charge lasts a good two days at least. Seems water tight and is comfortable to wear. I did need to return the first one for a defect, but Best Buy was very nice about it, and the second one seems to be fine. Good purchase.

Bought this to start tracking steps/sleep and because it's waterproof. When swimming or wearing in the shower I noticed that the display is almost always on (pressure from the water?). Device works great but the application was a little "clunky" for me. I used it for a month or so and switched to the FitBit Force, then the Jawbone UP24, and now using the FitBit Charge HR. Good starter device.
