My Denon AVR-X2100W was having issues working with my modern TV, so I moved it to a strictly audio setup. I bought this one and hooked up some Klipsch bookshelf speakers and my Sony Bravia tv via eArc hdmi. Everything was plug and play and the setup was a BREEZE. Especially compared to something like the Denon. Yes, it is very limited in features, but for ease-of-use and using bookshelf speakers for a tv you don’t need anything more than this. Very handy having auto turn on/off and an eArc connection so I only use my TV remote to operate it. The receiver remote just sits in a cabinet untouched. Great little simple receiver. My Denon receiver would overheat being inside a cabinet, but this one runs nice and cool with zero issues being in an essentially wooden box with no airflow.

I wanted to upgrade my home theatre system. Looked around and decided on the Sony DH 590. I got it open box excellent and saved $75. This reciever is perfect for our medium size living room. Without breaking the bank. I also added a powered sub. This thing rocks. You can definetly spend more and get more options. But at this price point you can’t spend less and get more than this Sony.

Having moved my Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver and Sony Core speakers to my bedroom, I needed a new receiver and speakers for my home office (man cave by night). For a mid-range receiver, the STR-DH590 is quite nice. I'll point out a few things I like about this receiver. Like the Sony STR-DH190, it has built-in Bluetooth. As such I can easily pair it with my iPhone and stream music. It also has plenty of audio inputs. I connected my three computers to it via RCA cables. It’s easy to switch between them using the handy Sony remote. The DH590 also has an optical audio TV input to which I connected my Sony Full Array LED 4K TV for amazing theater sound. I paired my Sony receiver to a pair of Polk Monitor XT-20 bookshelf speakers for a straight 2-channel setup. For a budget bookshelf speaker, the XT-20 rocks! Having 6.5” woofers, the Polk XT-20 pumps out impressively clean bass you can feel. The XT-20 is Hi-Res Audio certified. Detail and imaging from this model of speaker are truly remarkable. On my Sony DH590 receiver, Music “Enhancer” sound mode equalization help balance the sound, boosting the mid-range and treble. Overall, I’m loving my Sony STR-DH590 receiver!

Knocking off 1 star for not having a phono input, but my turntable has a switch for line-level output, so it wasn't really an issue. All the other features are great. It includes a calibration mic for proper surround sound setup. Built-in Bluetooth for streaming music from phones or tablets. I highly recommend using HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) on your TV. This allows the TV to turn the receiver on and off and control the volume using the TV's remote. i had to change HDMI ports on my TV, as only HDMI 3 supported the ARC function. Also had to change some settings on the TV and the receiver.
The receiver also included a simple FM antenna which worked fine, so don't let the sales folk talk you into buying an FM antenna (it requires a special connector, anyway). This replaced a Sony receiver I bought when I was in High School (audio-only). That was in the late 70s, LOL. My TV is only 4k, so I saw no reason to spring for an 8K receiver. 5.2 surround is also fine. I mean, geeze, how many speakers do you need? I already had a pair of old school Technics speakers for front L & R, so I only had to buy center channel, sub and rear L & R speakers. Sounds great!

Hi JosephE, Thank you for sharing this detailed review of your STR-DH590 5.2ch Home Theater AV Receiver. We're really happy to hear you appreciate the features, superb sound quality and it works with your 4K TV and speakers. Your feedback is extremely important to us and is very much appreciated. To connect a turntable to directly to the receiver, the stereo system should have a PHONO input. Since the receiver doesn't have a PHONO input, the turntable must have a built-in amplifier or an in-line amplifier must be used to connect the turntable to another input on the stereo system. The Sony STR-DH190 receiver has a dedicated PHONO input for connecting a turntable directly to the receiver. Good to know for pointing out the HDMI ARC function for connecting your TV and audio system with a single High Speed HDMI cable and eliminating the need for an additional composite audio or optical cable. Thank you for choosing Sony! -Jess

This is a really nice receiver for the price. On my last theater receiver I had to manually power off the unit after use. This unit, if you used HDMI cables from all your input components (highly recommend) and to the tv. It will automatically turn the receiver On/Off with the TV. The audio menu is a little clunky to get through but easier through the remote control. The sound quality is really good. I use it to boost the sound of my TV in a large room, but it does so much more. A single button on the remote switches different inputs including Bluetooth sync to your tablet or phone. Still much to learn but happy with it so far.

This receiver sounds amazing. Now watching movies just got a whole lot better, and music sounds full. The bluetooth is great cause I dont have to have my phone plugged into the auxiliary jack, and setup was so easy! Folks read the quick setup guide, and then refer to the owner's manual to fine tune the settings to your liking. This was not just a birthday gift, but a replacement for my old Sony Receiver from 1986 that finally died.

This unit overheats. Pairs well with a Honeywell fan placed over top. Warranty replaced defective amplifier within 30 days at 50/74 volume. Now protects at 46/74 volume without fan. With fan withstands full potential. Needs cooling system powers 4 150 watt MTX Thunder floor speakers at full volume and 2 Yamaha Satelites without issue paired with Honeywell fan. Phenomenal sound and multiple sound characters available IE) Stadium reverb, Multi Channel (clear sound) & other Dolby Digital options. Be warned center speaker is unavailable with stadium reverb and surround plays echoes which is impressive but limiting. Set level to 7.5 on FR, FL, SR & SL center to 10 ZERO DISTORTION WITHSTOOD HOURS OF PLAY WITHOUT PROTECTION AT FULL VOLUME WITH HONEY WELL FAN OVER TOP

Purchased the 590 5 years ago in early 2018 (After it was released in late 2017)... Plugged it in and enjoyed it without any complaints... A few months ago in October (Now December of 2023) I thought that I would look for a 5.1 Receiver with bells and whistles Atmos. Not wanting any more speakers I found the brand new off the press Onkyo 5.2 receiver with Atmos for a 5.2 system like mine. I put my 590 in the Onkyo box (was going to put it in the guest house or storage), Plugged in the Onkyo with ATMOS and the sound was... Horribly tinny and thin. I played with the settings and the manual for 2 days on the 2023 Onkyo without the least success for improved sound on the Onkyo. I realized I had been spoiled by the 590 for the last 5 years! When I realized that, I took the 590 out of the box, disconnected the NEW Onkyo, returned it, and reinstalled the 5 year old 590 after reinitializing it. Went through the initial set up on the 590 in 5 minutes, and started listening to it's AWESOME, RICH Sound processed from Apple TV streamed movies and music. (Connect The Apple TV to the TV and let the ARC bring the movie and music sound tract to the 590 for processing and delivering to the speakers... Gives better video than passing through the 590). Only when SONY upgrades the 590 will I even try to replace this dulcet Mother of Very Groovy Sound 590!

This is a beast. This beast can also push 4k 120hz just make sure you read page 29 of the manual and change your hdmi input to enhanced. Other options are really well hidden in the menu, thats the only compliant I have. This stereo shows majority of the menu on your tv however important things like enhanced audio are hidden in a smaller menu only shown on the receiver itself

I bought this Sony 5.2 channel receiver to replace a Pioneer 5.2 that was 5 years old and started popping and squealing through the speakers before it quit completely. I got this at black Friday price of $199.00 it has been great so far. Connects just the same sounds great with plenty of Power for my pioneer old school cs707 front speakers that have 16" woofers a Polk center speaker Bose surround 601s in the rear and a 12" klipsch powered sub. This is better than the pioneer, has more features and everything works as it should. The pioneer had issues with arc return sound not working all the time and didn't have Bluetooth. So I am really satisfied to have my system running again for so little money would definitely recommend.

Excellent receiver for the price. Easy to set up, love the blue-tooth capability and available HDMI ports for my PS4 and Amazon 4k fire TV cube for my streaming media needs. Not a specs person so will not comment on that aspect but it works great for my built in ceiling surround speakers in my family room and it sounds great. Happy with my choice and probably will buy another one for my master bedroom.

I ordered this yesterday Thurs 6/24/2021 around 5-6 pm and it arrived around 2 pm today Frid 6/25/2021. Did not pay extra for next day delivery, it was included.
Took my time setting everything up. Accessed Easy setup once speakers were connected and receiver was powered on. Went to source HDMI ARC and easily calibrated speakers with the included 'mic.' Chose source TV, then went to YouTube on my PC and played 'American Trilogy," and a word I rarely use came out of my mouth - AWESOME! Beautiful full sound with nice base tones.
The receiver I replaced was an almost 30 year old Yamaha that still worked fine but I knew I wasn't getting the full sound that today's technology offers, plus it was silver and stood out behind the glass in my entertainment center. The black is barely visible but for the small power light and source indicator. Everything I wanted and was hoping for this thing is. I highly recommend this unit for anyone looking for a very nice upgrade with similar desires and expectations as I've indicated here. ;-)

Overall, we are satisfied with this receiver. The sound through the speakers is satisfactory. The main feature missing is that there is no usb on the front of receiver. However, I am pleased with the Bluetooth connection. It is easy to connect with our devices.
Our main reason for choosing a new receiver is the ability to switch imputs. Years ago, we bought a separate switch which was a piece of junk.
