Is this product ideal for cleaning the carpet on the steps? null

I'd say no. It's because it doesn't have a hose and separate attachment so it would be very clunky to do steps.

No because you cannot run the machine sideways and there is no hose or handheld attachment. It does the top side of the stairs fine however, with a bit of maneuvering.

Top of stairs okay but it is a little large for stairs and you can't do the edge. If you find something that works on stairs let me know. 
Otherwise it works very well on carpeting

No. While PowerDash is a powerful carpet cleaner it is not intended for use on stairs. I would recommend the Hoover SmartWash+ which includes upholstery and stair tools or a portable cleaner like Spotless GO for your stairs. Thanks, Joseph - The Hoover Team
