You place the wifi extender close to your router during the one-time setup process. I used WPS which did everything over wifi. No wired connection from extender to router. After setup was complete, I moved the extender to the middle of my house. It works great for me. See my 5 star review entitled: Some Clarification for You.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No. The unit does not have to hardwired to the router. My extender is several rooms away from the router, and extends the signal all over the house. It does have extension slots that allows you to hardwire equipment such as TV, Blu-ray player, or security camera to the extender.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No it does not have to be 'hardwired'. It is an extender that uses the wireless router's signal and provides a larger coverage area for your Wi-Fi network. Other devices can be hardwired to it, though.
