The box will connect the lights to the picture on your TV and mimic those colors to your background of the wall. Checkout Phillips website for a demo preview or search Phillips hue sync box demo on YouTube for a visual.

For example, say you’re watching a movie, and a firey explosion happens. Your lights will flash the same red orange colors. Say you’re watching something with a sky and a field in the scene, your lights will project a blue and green on your wall to match the sky and grass. It’s hard to describe, I suggest going on YouTube and watching some hue play sync videos. It just makes what you’re watching a bit more immersive and cohesive. You can certainly use these lights without this box, this just allows for the color syncing to tv, movies, and video games.
