A "woofer" usually refers to the bass speaker of a sound system. It is distinguished from the "tweeter" which is much smaller and handles treble passages. In your Vizio system you have a "sub-woofer" (the large squarish box) which is particularly limited to handling low frequency sound waves and nothing higher. These tend to rumble around the room and do not need to be located in a particular place to be effective. You will only hear from it if these low-frequency wave are present. The long sound bar contains the "tweeters'' which are set up to handle both treble and upper level bass sound waves which are more directional. These you want coming from near the TV. The terms go back to the start of the "High Fidelity" movement of the 50's and are basically a joking reference to a dog's low "woofs" and a bird's high-pitched "tweets". In those days most speakers consisted of one large speaker (the woofer) and one or more smaller-sized speakers, each handling a particular part of the frequency range. Speaker design has now progressed so that most of the spectrum can be covered by pairing smaller speakers to mimic a larger one (which is how your sound bar functions). Only the lowest waves are not easily duplicated this way; hence the development of the "subwoofer" to cover only these difficult to mimic wave.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.A sub woofer provides bass for the system... Sound doesn't really come out of it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The subwoofer is that box that comes with your unit. It plays the lower or bass notes. This one is wireless, a nice feature and it does a very nice job!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The subwoofer provides lower rumbles for sounds like explosions or bass in music.
