A fun, fast, and ferocious sci-fi horror movie. Wastes no time getting the action going. Great aesthetics. Solid performances from all the actors. A vicious little piece of genre fare.

A great movie that kinda came out of nowhere. With the pandemic in full swing some movies were coming out straight to Blu-ray. This movie is really scary and suspenseful and Kristen Stewart gives a great performance. There is always something lurking around the corner. A definite must have and the slipcover was a nice bonus.

Loved the movie, kept me interested the whole time. I'm afraid of enclosed spaces and being under the water, so also added that element of fear for me. If you love monster movies, watch this. If you find tj Miller funny, watch this. Kristen Stewart also did a great job :).

I personally loved this movie. The story was great and it had a phenomenal soundtrack as well. I enjoy these type of movies while others don't. Id recommend it to everyone tho. Kind of sucks its not available in 4K.

This movie feels like a callback to the horror/adventure movies of the 80's. It starts right when the action does, and doesn't hold your hand narrative-wise. Monster designs are great, character deaths are well done and interesting, and the final monster design is a great for cosmic horror fans.

    UNDERWATER Blu Review

LOVECRAFTIAN HORROR THAT BLEW ME AWAY!!! TOTAL ANXIETY DRIVEN SCARES!! PICTURE: 4.5 / 5 While the nature of some of the photography holds Underwater from being reference quality, it looks overall excellent, with some scenes actually do looking demo-worthy for standard blu-ray (sadly, there is no sign of a 4K disc being released anywhere anytime soon). Contrast is perhaps the picture’s strongest asset, with suit lights, flashlights, interior sources, and other devices piercing the darkness in the depths of the ocean to great effect. Fine detail on ‘dry’ scenes (i.e. not outside in the water) is exceptional, with the various imperfections on the suits, like scratches and chipped paint, looking very real and worn. Close-ups on faces also reveal a high level of detail such as pores and individual strands of hair, facial or otherwise. Outside in the depths of the ocean things do look a bit murky and more monochromatic due to how the light plays with the darkness in the water as well as with fine particles such as silt and debris that are floating around, with everything having a strong push towards dark green and blue tones. Objects in these scenes still look detailed but not to the same level as the stuff that takes place in dry places. Contrast does stay strong though, allowing the picture to stay punchy. The picture does not pop in terms of colors, but that is intentional and true to the source. Most of it stays within shades of murky green, grey, and white, which, given the setting, I am not surprised about, and it does reinforce the look and feel of the story, making it feel appropriate. In terms of compression, I noticed a few instances of mild banding in the harshest of shots which take place in the water with various objects and varying degrees of light and gradations inside the frame. These are infrequent, however, with the rest of the codec looking superb. Digitally shot, there is no film grain of any kind, but the picture does look very cinematic. Overall, not perfect but excellent. I do wish this had gotten a 4K/HDR transfer on disc as I’m sure the contrast and fine detail would have improved. Maybe an indie label will pick it up to release it on 4K disc down the line. AUDIO: 5 / 5 The lossless 7.1 DTS-HD MA mix on the disc is quite impressive. As mentioned above, the film takes a mere couple of minutes to get the action started, and from then on the audio stays in practically reference-quality mode throughout. As soon as the first shakes and implosions occur, you can feel the high quality of dynamic range, immersiveness, and bass of the track. The walls around Kristen Stewart (who plays Nora) explode with high intensity, with both the mid-range, likes voices, and the lower-end frequencies, like the debris flying and crashing around, staying crystal clear, with the bass giving out a hefty amount of tactile effects. The four surrounds channels are also used to great effect. A few seconds before things go crazy, you can hear the groans and other sounds of the facility struggling to keep itself together, with the surrounds and back speakers making sure you hear them around you. Afterwards, you can hear pieces of metal, concrete and other matter flying next to you. Other things like the score and screaming also manage to come through clear and well defined despite the chaos. In quieter moments, the mix stays impressive as well, with more subtle things like machinery and computer devices giving the setting a very realistic feel.

I am a sucker for underwater films, sci fi films, and horror films so this one checked off the box on all three categories. I didn't watch many of the trailers so as not to spoil anything. In the end that was a great move as this film is quite a ride. Now let me get this out of the way upfront. Is there amazing character development? Nope. Is there a lot of subtext and interweaving plot points? Nope. Is there a lot of sex and violence? Nope. So what exactly are you in for with this film? This is like the Abyss meets....(I won't say). I can't say. I'll just say this film had such a pay off for horror fans, it would be horrible to come out and say what that pay off is. if you were to make a film based on a video game which mixed Alien, and the Abyss, you would get into the right territory. Kristen Stewart is great in the film and all of the actors do well, but they aren't really the story. This film takes off from minute one and you are in it. You are running with them, trying to figure out what the heck is going on and how you will survive. You pretty much get so focused on the survival part of this that you forgot...there might be something in the water out there with other ideas. I'll say this is a great popcorn, entertainment film for just about everyone. The film is not slow, it is not really deep, but even though I really dislike action films, and prefer the darker, more art house type of drama/thriller/sci fi/horror fare, I found myself really enjoying this. I saw it in the theaters and bought it when it came out I enjoyed it so much. Worth your time for some enjoyable entertainment.

A story about a high tech underwater drilling complex which unearths something which causes a devastating underwater earthquake which damages and kills most of the workers. The movie follows the survivors and their attempt to rescue themselves from the crushing undersea pressure and alien creatures. Since this is science fiction, a certain amount of suspension of disbelief is required to enjoy this film. I was never really a fan of Kristen Stewart, but she did a good job here. Lots of CGI, but production values are very good which helps sell the story. An enjoyable diversion during the COVID lockdown.

I'm a big fan of horror / sci-fi in space and underwater, so this was on my radar since I watched the trailer. I didn't go into it with overly high expectations but it actually turned out to be a great film. I'm not really a big Kristen Stewart fan but she did very well in this role. It was a little strange seeing TJ Miller in something other than comedy, but he did a great job as well. The visuals and effects were great, and even though we've seen these deep sea thrillers before, this one didn't feel like it was just a re-hash of something from the 80s or 90s. Original story, great pacing and a constant sense of "dread", fantastic visuals and audio, and great performances turned in by all. Definitely recommend if you enjoy films in the genre like Deepstar 6, Leviathan, and The Abyss.

This movie was not anything groundbreaking but at the same time I didn't feel like I was really reliving any other movies out there. If you are claustrophobic this story will help you get in touch with that fear by having you really put in a worse case scenario. I enjoyed the interesting "discoveries" that they found deep underwater but found myself really wanting more information about these "discoveries". No idea if a sequel will be a thing but that was my only complaint. If you want a little scifi fix to hold you over until the next big thing, Underwater should do the trick.

I really like this movie but it is hard to recommend. I love the sound design, the atmosphere and I think all the actors involved do a good job. It does however feel like a movie where they are missing an act 1. Spend time with the characters in a day in the life of before it all goes wrong. There's still some cool stuff in here though.

Surprisingly good. If I had one complaint it would be the setup is far too rushed to get to the action. The film would have benefited from a more thoughtful beginning that introduces you to the characters without spoiling what is to come. So big failure on the filmmakers there. However the acting is very good, the characters are interesting and each have personality. The action and suspense is solid with unique set pieces.

I wasn't going to buy this movie until I read a read a few recommendations. The cover is boring and I hadn't heard much about it when it was in the theaters. A couple of comments on a movie site made me take a chance on it and I'm glad I did. The effects are very well done and the action/suspense/horror is pretty much relentless from the start. I could see where some people could say that parts are generic and done before, but that doesn't change the fact that this was an entertaining movie.

Wanted to buy a new blu-ray to watch so we searched Best Buy's website, selecting our local store for same day pick up. Found a movie we were interested in and purchased it online Received notification very quickly that it was ready for the curbside pickup. Pulled up to the curbside pickup area, held up my ID, popped the trunk and the Best Buy person put the product in the back and away we went for movie night at home. Also this movie was way better than the reviews reported.

Another blind buy and it blew me away. This is not your typical sci-fi movie.Kristen Stewart really hit it out of the park ,Vincent Cassel shows why he's a great actor There are hints of the Abyss and other sci-fi movie we already seen , yet this movie stands on it's own. The studio chose not to do a 4K disc .This is a dark movie better viewed at night or a darken room during the day. Dolby Vision would have helped here or any HDR 10 format. But the 1080P transfer was well done. The audio is DTS 7.1 and is also well done. There's also a lot of nerve racking moments in this one. I enjoyed it.

We've seen films like this before. A team of miners trapped deep beneath the surface and tasked to save themselves only to discover something else is down there with them. Basic premise has worked a few times before. What makes "Underwater" work is the way it's filmed, utilizing special effects to really provide the atmosphere and claustrophobic nature of the deep dark. Plus a subtle Lovecraftian nod that adds a delightfully darker dimension

Don't look for any deep meaning or plot. This is simply a fun popcorn movie that will definitely make you jump in some scenes. The only thing I would have liked better is if it was released in 4k HDR. The lower bit rate for color caused some visible banding even on a high end projector with the underwater scenes. The same projector on The Meg in 4K would show no banding at all and that content will easily expose a poor projector.
