These JVC ANC true wireless earbuds pleasantly surprised me by turning out to be a simply great value for the level of performance they provided. Of course, there isn't much here you haven't seen before in other offerings, and there's nothing particularly inspired here either, but the whole package is ALMOST without flaw, and many of you may not even care about my misgivings owing to the truly bargain-basement price being asked here. The case is pleasantly rounded and easily pocketable with a 3-segment LED charge gauge on the front and USB-C port at the back. It's a little "chunkier" than some other smaller, more svelte cases, but I suppose that also fits in with the playful sort of "gumy" vibe and styling cues. The cover is slightly translucent which is a little stylish/different I suppose, but it's a snap-shut cover rather than a more substantial-feeling magnetic closure. There is also a helpful key chain loop/lanyard strap attached to the case to it's easy to clip onto a bag, purse, duffel, etc...it's a nice design feature that actually makes it a little harder to lose than some other completely smooth and featureless charging cases. The buds themselves sport a comma-shaped form factor that worked better in my ear than I expected them to--I am one of those who simply cannot wear Apple's buds because they are ALWAYS falling out. The JVC buds sat securely in my ear and the downward curved wings helped keep them securely in place. I did not notice any appreciable movement or loss of seal while using them during a jog and light workout. They are only IPX4 rated so they should be fine for regular gym use, but I wouldn't take them swimming or head into the shower with them. JVC helpfully included 4 different sets of eartips in the package: XS, S, M & L so you should probably be able to find a comfortable fit, but the pack-in USB-C cable is almost insultingly short...unless you're charging from a battery pack or a laptop USB port already sitting on a desk or tabletop, I'm guessing your charger/charging port are going to be WAY out of reach. In terms of features and performance, there's actually a lot to like here. There is no companion app to adjust ANC level or create a customized EQ, but you do get to choose between normal operation, ANC, and hear-through, as well as three EQ settings--flat, clear, and bass. The 'Bass' setting had the most noticeable effect of the three, but honestly, these little buds cranked out a very engaging low end regardless of which setting I selected. Mids and highs did not sound strained or muffled at all, imaging was on the *slightly* wide side which was unexpected but welcome, and fully 3D-enabled signals like Amazon's Dolby Atmos tracks were rendered with aplomb as were its higher-def sound sources. You can even activate a low-latency mode which slightly improves BT delay for gaming or reduced A/V sync issues when watching videos. Each bud can be used independently which effectively doubles the active battery life if you are in need of some LONG distance audio entertainment. Speaking of which, I loved the quick-charge feature that gives you a good hour's audio from just a 10-minute charge, even on a fully-depleted battery. Count on anywhere between 7-10 hours of playback depending on ANC/hear-through settings before you'll need to juice them up again in the case. They handled calls just fine though I wouldn't want to work all day long in a call center wearing them--call quality wasn't THAT great though those on the other end of my calls said they could hear me just fine. Finally, the small touch panels seemed to be dialed in just right as I didn't experience any mishits or extra presses when I was working the controls. There were just a few niggles with these JVC buds that left me a little flat. First, the ANC is just...okay. Yes, it somewhat attenuated the din of my noisy office, but they really didn't do much to drown out the engine noise of my cross-country flight last week, despite the marketing materials claiming that low-frequency sounds like engine noise are what should be MOST effectively blocked by the ANC function. Playback is also not interrupted when removing the buds...not a deal-killer, but it would have been nice. Still...that price...gotta keep that low in mind! But the biggest problems I had with these buds were the absurdly complex and unconventional tap/hold sequences that were required to operate them...a companion app that would allow function remapping would have gone a LONG way to improving the situation. There are 4 functions on the left bud: play/pause, volume down, and volume up (1, 2, and 3 taps respectively), and a 1-second hold to toggle the EQ mode. But the right bud has 5 functions to offer (or to be remembered): ANC mode toggle, track forward, and track back (1, 2, and 3 taps again), plus 4 taps to switch on/off the low-latency mode, and a 1-second hold for activating Touch & Talk. This last one especially baffled me as it simply lowers the playback volume to nearly a whisper, ostensibly so you can talk to someone else while...still listening to barely audible music? It seems like a simple play/pause toggle would be more effective (and less rude). It's probably just a matter of unlearning some habits I've picked up from using other earbuds, but having only one playback control on one bud (play/pause) while all the others are on the other bud just felt a little non-intuitive to me. I ended up using the playback controls on my phone and PC more often than trying to recall which of the tap/hold patterns were necessary to do what I wanted on the buds themselves--YMMV. In the end, no, these buds do not produce sublime, ultra-detailed, audiophile-grade music that goes squirting down your ear canals to create audio nirvana...but I have heard MUCH worse from buds commanding much higher prices, and for what the JVCs DO get done (and it's actually quite a lot), they do it VERY well. Recommended!
