A:Answer One year manufacturer warranty is almost always a "defect of workmanship" type warranty. They do not cover power surges, normal wear and tear and accidental breakage from children or pets, etc. Geek Squad Protection (GSP) plans are not extended warranties. Geek Squad and Best Buy know things happen and will replace the item with a new one as stated in the terms and conditions which will include just about any issue you may have. Be sure to bring in all the parts and accessories of the item into the store when you plan to make a claim under the plan. The plan starts on the day you purchase the item and runs concurrently with the manufacturer warranty. If the item doesn't work because the manufacture of the item included a defect, then the manufacturer's warranty will cover it. If the item doesn't work because the dog chewed the optic cable or your house experienced a lightning strike or surge in the grid, GSP will cover it. GSP will also cover manufacture defects and you will need to read the coverage details on any GSP you plan to buy because they can vary from product to product. Or, you can ask the sales consultant what the plan covers. Best Buy Customer Service can replace it on the spot if it is in stock and within the dates of your plan. Once it is replaced the original GSP plan is fulfilled meaning you will need to purchase another GSP plan if you want coverage on the new item. I rely on my GSP plans to cover my items regardless of the problems because it is easier to deal with Best Buy than most manufacturer customer service organizations.
