• No it is not necessary to have it for that but can make you feel like the infant is more secure. Very much like the back and headrest padding in a car seat.

• I didn’t for either of my infants they were both 7+ pounds though and fairly chunky

• You can but for our baby it was not required she has been using it since 1 month old and doesn’t slide around or anything like that
