The best way to create/edit/store Microsoft-Office files like Word, PPT, etc is to use Google docs (which does not require any additional software installation). This is the default in chromebooks. If the use wants to create/edit/store the Word docs on the chromebook (not on google drive), free Word app can be downloaded from Playstore. But, that will have limited capability to edit. In conclusion -- yes, your teenager can use this chromebook to create, edit Word docs without any additional software.
