The impeller? It rotates a partial turn, stops, backs a tiny bit, rotates a partial turn, stops, backs a tiny bit and keeps doing that over and over. IT DOES ROTATE FULL 360 DEGREE TURNS. Below that top impeller is a wider vane impeller that runs at a different speed (faster) to pull the clothing down around the center post impeller. It runs the same way, but just a little bit faster than the center post impeller. This action circulates the clothing down around the middle impeller and then back up around the sides of the drum tub better than the old impeller designs. It is a NEW type of impeller system, and it seems to work really well for cleaning, however, it is new and it is a LOT more complicated than a single piece impeller. An agitator pumps and jumps up and down, and up and down. Some washing machines still use that type of an "agitator", but most washing machines use a rotating type of impeller system. The new Whirlpool impeller design is almost brand new, so no one really knows how long it will work reliably before requiring any repairs or replacement of parts like the transmission or the seals on the drum. I hope it works out GREAT, because it is a very good impeller design for cleaning clothes. How bad does it wear the clothing out? Again, it is a new design. We don't know yet. Washing machines just do wear out the stuff like clothing, bed linens, towels, blankets, and anything else that they wash.
