Tap is smaller, costs less and needs to be "tapped" via a button at the top to answer your questions. Alexa on the Echo is "listening" all the time for the Launch Word, "Alexa." I have no idea if Amazon is recording my conversations or not. Frankly, I can care less. If Amazon is interested in listening to the riveting stories I have with my wife about my ongoing battles with constipation and the trade off is that I can command Alexa to turn off my lights, like I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, I'm coming out WAY ahead.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have an Echo and am considering also buying a Tap. It has a battery so you can take it with you but best of all, you can now enable the ability to use it hands free, without "tapping" it. You just have to go to your Alexa app and enable that feature. This feature was just added in February I think.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have both and the Dot would work for travel.. However the sound quality on the Dot is not that good for music.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Echo is a pretty much stationary device. It has to be plugged in for power. It is the largest in the group of Echo products and intended for being in one room for use. The Tap is chargeable and you can pick it up and move it from room to room. I think it holds an 8 hour charge. You can do all the things with it you can do with the Echo, but more portable. Keep in mind they both need wireless connections to be useful unless you play music from your phone or tablet via bluetooth from it. So it depends on your use case and how mobile you want to be! Good luck!

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.the tap you need a blue tooth speaker which could be an advantage over the echo as you can upgrade the speakers just make sure it is compatible. Alos the tap requires you to touch it in order to activate
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Echo is meant to be a "fixed" speaker. Tab is meant to be a portable speaker, eg. travel. Echo does not have a battery integrated, it alwas has to be pluged in; the Tab does have a decent battery bilt in into it. . Echo speaker is much better than the tab, and if you want to give it a comand "e.g. Alexa play songs by Abba", the Echo will always be listening the Tab, won´t, you neet to press the microphone button. If you want it for travel get the TAB.
