Basically size and speakers. The dot sound is good for every day tasks, but you'll probably want to use external speakers for music. It comes with 3.5 mm sound out jack and cord, or you can use a Bluetooth speaker

Other than that, the Dot will do everything the Echo does. This is what we've been told, and so far it is true.

If you are looking for something smaller and more portable, then the Echo Dot should be your choice. I have both, one Echo in my home office, and Echo Dots throughout the house and a travel Dot as well.

The main difference between the echo and Echo Dot is the speaker: The Echo Dot is essentially the top portion of the regular Amazon Echo, without the beefy speaker underneath it. Instead, The Echo Dot is designed to be hooked up to a set of external speakers. all of the features and commands that work with the Amazon Echo work with the Echo Dot
