You would only need the App for the set up process, not for the continued use of the device. Once it is set up and on WiFi, you can talk to the device and use it as often as you would like. It is only required for the initial setup, though. If there is a power outage and it cannot reconnect to the wifi automatically, you will need the app/PC again.
