It does play local radio stations.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Echo and the Echo Dot Do NOT have radio receivers, nor do they have batteries for portable use. They are completely reliant on an internet connection for ALL functions. That being said, IF you have power and internet 450 miles down the road, it will work the same as it does at your home location once you connect it to the internet. It will pickup radio through the iHeartradio skill, via internet, but not all stations are available on iHeartradio. if the sporting events are available over the internet, likely you could get Alexa to play them for you somehow. There are also batteries you can attach to the Dot to power it away from a wall socket, at an extra cost of course. With the questions you asked, I think you may be better off looking into a small HD radio with battery power available. Of course if your local station broadcast doesn't reach that 450 mile away location even that won't work. If you have a laptop, internet radio may be a better bet.

As for the mobility, the Dot needs to be plugged into electric and connected to your WiFi so it would be bound by the range of your WiFi. In a rural area, that could be a few hundred feet but nothing more. There is a mobile Alexa device that uses cell service, but I have no knowledge of how that device works.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You asked a lot, and I will attempt to unpack it all for you. 1st. your local radio station question is dependent on the specific station. These days a station will usually have a live-stream on their website, and since your Dot is connected to your phone, you'd be able to play on your phone and listen on the Dot via bluetooth. There are also many free apps like iHeartRadio, which may have your local stations on it already. Just check. 2nd. It needs to be plugged in. And if you leave your home WiFi and go 450 miles "down the road", you'd need the Dot to be on the same 'network' as your phone. This means if you're in a hotel and both devices are connected to the same Wifi, fine. If you're in the car, or out in a field, and you have a cell data signal, you'd have to use your phone as a hotspot and let the Dot connect to the cellular network (and have some kind of battery power source to plug it into). 3rd. Sporting events are trickier, because there are often blackout rules. Sorry to say you'll have to research your specific team. If you're talking Packers, NFL partners with TuneIn, another radio app, and offers trials or subscriptions to be able to hear every game all season. There are sometimes free ways though, so check it out. Hope this gives you a start. https://tunein.com/radio/NFL-c1736013/?_branch_match_id=599632676237228749 https://tunein.com/ https://www.iheart.com/
