• Depend on what you're trying to do. The smart plug is a bridge between Alexa and your lighting components if you are not using a Home device. For example C by GE comes with a 4 light and smart plug package. With the bulbs by themselves you can not use Alexa. The smart plug creates the connection between Alexa and the lights.

• If you want it to turn a device on and off that is "dumb" you will need a smart plug or switch. You dint need it though it has other features that will work right out of the box

• You dont need a smart plug only internet connection is required. If you havea smart plug or bulb you can control it with the echo dot but its not needed to operate in any way.

• No, a Smart Plug is not needed. You just need to plug it into a normal power outlet. A smart plug is used for when you have a device that is not smart (i.e. an old lamp with a regular bulb) that you want to turn off and on using a device like this Echo Dot.
