No. You would only need the app ,you can add as many Dots as you like. The app needed is the Alexa app.

Plug in your device. 3. Open the Alexa app . 4. Open More and select Add Device. 5. Select Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus and more. 6. Follow the on screen instructions to set up you device. You will use the Alexa app for all 4 of the Echo dots you are wanting to purchase and set up and you will follow the same steps, the only difference is you will name them in different rooms as it prompts through set up.
