Hi -, You do not need to be an amazon prime member to use the echo dot. You will need a smart phone or tablet to download the Alexa app to complete set up. From there you will also need an amazon account which is free to create if you don't have already! The device is powered by plugging into an outlet so you will need a working outlet not too close to the wall for Alexa to help with requests. Hope that helps!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.They say it does not. But there is a catch. You need an Amazon Account (not Prime) to use Alexa. I have a Prime account so I linked it. Like all the other similar competitors such as Siri, Google, etc, Alexa is always in a 'hearing mode' therefore it is definitely listening in on what is taking place in the room. We have it in our child's room. It is convenient especially due to the small footprint and clock. Most use is as an intercomm service and alarm clock.
