This device does require you to connect your Amazon account during setup but at Amazon we pride ourselves in protecting our customers' privacy so we have a number of different options to do just that. The best way for you to use it without having Alexa listen for the wake word at all, is to use the physical Mute button on the device which turns off all mic functionality. This way, you can still go into your Alexa app to set all of the features and functionality and connect devices to it via Bluetooth while still maintaining your privacy.
