The difference is this one has the SD card for expanded memory. It also was a bigger screen. You can play games on it just as you would on the 6" just with a bigger picture. I own both and prefer this one. I haven't used my 6" at all since I bought this one.

You are right it does not have a micro-SD card slot, so you cannot increase storage like you can on the HD 8. The HD 8 also has the latest version of the Fire OS, which will allow you to access the Alexa application on it. The HD 6 does not at this time. The HD 8 also has a longer batter life, and of course a larger screen. It also has better audio with dual speakers, the HD 6 has only a single speaker.

I think the six-inch has an SD slot as well, but the 8 inch one has 1.5 ram in that little bit makes a difference in the speed. I had the 6 inch long before, and it's not nearly as sleek as this one, it was kind of brick-ish.
