It’ll always tell you where they are but I don’t think it’ll show you where they were.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My daughter-in-law hangs the air tag around her dog’s neck using the luggage accessory. I don’t know the range of the air tag. I assume it locates through the internet because it’s connected to your email address.

I’m assuming you’re asking about the range from your Apple device to the AirTag, but that doesn’t matter because it uses Apple’s Find My ecosystem. The AirTag does not have GPS built-in; instead, it discretely pings other Apple devices to find its general location. So that means the AirTag uses the location of the Apple devices that it pinged to triangulate its general location. From the Find My app, you can see a pin drop of the AirTag’s general location and then use the Precision Finding feature to locate the AirTag when your compatible iPhone is within range of the AirTag. (Precision Finding only works with iPhone 11 and newer.) If you’re going to use it on your cat, you’ll need something like the Belkin secure holder with key ring to attach it to the collar. If your cat is continuously moving fast, I’m not sure how often the AirTag updates its location. The AirTag will not record or trace your cat’s route; it’ll only show its current general location. On YouTube, a guy mailed AirTags to other countries, and he was able to track its location because it was within range of other iPhones and Apple devices. So as long as it is within range of another Apple device, you’ll be able to find your AirTag’s general location.

These work differently than Tile in that they are a part of the “Find My” function on all Macs. So that means that the location is updated with much greater precision any time the AirTag gets near an iPhone, iPad, MacBook, etc. that has it’s Bluetooth on (which is pretty much everyone). I don’t know exactly how close it has to be, but the huge advantage that these have over Tile products is that there are millions upon millions of Mac products that people are using. In my reply to a similar question from about two months ago, I stated that I didn’t think it would be too long before collars with some kind of attachment system will come out. I tried hanging one on my dachshund where the rabies tag goes, but it was a little too big and made too much noise cleaning together. I am going to try and jerry rig some type of way to secure it to another location of the collar. Hope this helps.
