I'd suggest using Facebook Messenger to send messages or just Skype.

You need to create an Apple account and turn iMessage on or sign into your Apple account.

You must have access to wifi. You can use WiFi at home, visit a free WiFi area like McDonald’s, or use a hotspot, like an iPhone with that capability.
