• This is a Smart Cover not a smart case. It only offers protection for the iPad screen when closed. It also serves as a stand while using the iPad.

• No. It covers only the screen when is not used. When you use it, it folds to the back, and might protect the iPad 's back. It is not a shell for the iPad, it is rather a screen protector which becomes an iPad stand when you use the iPad. If you want to protect the iPad 's back all the time, look for another product.
