Revising my earlier answer of "No" to "Yes, with an additional adapter." I was delighted to find a solution. To use an external microphone to record into iPhone's VoiceMemos or Camera>Video, it eventually did work for my iPhone 7 Plus. I needed a third piece between this lightning cable and the microphone -- and I had an old $12 splitter that resolved my problem. For those interested in the technical answer, with my iPhone 7, you need to plug a TRRS type male end (four conductor) into the 3.5mm "out" of the Apple MMX62AM/A lightning-to-3.5mm adapter (the cord you currently are browsing here on Best Buy). My additional adapter splits the Apple MMX62AM/A cord's TRRS output into two 3.5mm jacks -- one that is designed to be a stereo audio output and a second 3.5mm jack that is labeled "microphone." The splitter I used was the "Rockit Audio Headphone/Microphone Splitter" advertised as 3.5mm Male Jack Plug (4 conductor) to Separate Female Headphone Port & Microphone Port. Thanks to Cult of Mac for giving me the idea for the $14 solution... see that columnist's exposition of a TRRS plug compared to a TRS plug at https://cdn.cultofmac.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/DraggedImage-1.jpeg -- such a simple answer.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No. I bought it simultaneously with a Sony Lavalier (ECMCS3) at Best Buy. When it's plugged in while recording either through the iPhone's VoiceMemos app or alternatively in basic Camera > Video, the phone's internal microphone remains active and nothing is recorded from the external microphone. For people who think it is recording from the external mic, try putting your phone in a drawer or under a pillow while you record (separate it from the external mic) to double-check. Maybe it works with some brands of mics, but not the Sony. Sorry I wasted the money based on the positive answers here.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Not certain because I only use it when playing songs from my phone via Bluetooth.
