You can flip the keyboard behind the iPad and still use it just as a tablet. The keys are deactivated when in this mode.

Unlike the previous Smart Keyboard Case, though, the keys face backward, so you can feel them with your fingers when your hand is holding the device. They keys do not accept input in this mode.
