You could “cut your cable” (or satellite) and receive content via streaming to your TV. Cable or satellite not required to watch programming on the device. But understand streaming content is not the same as receiving live channels from cable or satellite. But much of that content, such as HBO, etc, is available without cable of satellite. It works with WiFi as its input for content (also accepts Ethernet input). It requires its output to connect to your TV via HDMI Cable. You must have internet service to stream the content.
