The difference is in the equipment and functionality your system is set up to perform. If your TV is not 4K, there is virtually no difference. With compatible equipment you will get a better picture quality and greater functionality offered by the video source.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The current Apple TV will stream movies purchased through iTunes and purchased Blu-ray movies with and iTunes code in 4K HDR. Well worth the upgrade if you have movies in your iTunes account. You must have an 4K TV with HDR support as well.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hi, The difference between them is the current Apple TV is 4K with HDR, the 4th generation is not. There are other minor differences such as the speed etc. which are slight improvements from the 4th generation but are not earth-shattering. The 4K and the HDR are big improvements, and especially if you have a 4K tv. In addition, Apple is offering all of its movie content an upgrade to 4k at no additional cost. It may not be for all content, but it is for many. They are charging the sd cost and giving you 4k for many movies. I hope this helps.
