If you get the cellular watch, you can add it to your account. If you got the GPS watch, it will still pair perfectly. It just needs his iPhone nearby, in order to be connected . I’ve had both cellular and GPS watches, and since I rarely leave my iPhone behind, I rarely ever needed the cellular
