The sensor will trigger the alarm if a window is open during your security modes "Arm Away" or "Arm Home". If your security mode is set to "Standby" then the sensor will just trigger a chime. Overall, you can set up or change the rules as to when you want the alarm to be triggered vs when you just want a notification or a chime.
