The single 2.5Gb port is either/or configurable, so you can use it either to connect the router to your desktop NIC or to your WAN interface, but not both. The router also has the ability to link-aggregate two of the 1Gb ports (WAN port and LAN port #4) as your WAN interface for an effective 2Gb link if your ISP-facing device supports that type of connection.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Connecting your computer to the 2.5gb port will not give you faster than 1gb Internet speeds (minus overhead) since the WAN port would be 1gb. If you have a 2.5gb port on your modem and you connect the 2.5gb port from the router to the modem you can get what your ISP provides to you to about 2gb or so. Most ISPs providing gigabit service at 1.2gb overprovision to about 1.4gb but you won't be able to get that from a single computer since all the other ports on the router are 1gb. If you are using multiple devices then you could get close to the 1.4gb of bandwidth from the Internet. You would need a router with 2 or more 2.5gb ports (1 WAN and 1 LAN) to get more than 1gb from a single computer.
