• Yes, you will need a modem if you have a tyical internet connection, like cable or satellite. If you have fiber optic internet you will need a small box that is a little different than a standard modem. But yes, this router is only a router, another device will be required.

• Yes, you will need to purchase a separate modem that is approved by your Internet service provider. I bought a modem from Best Buy when I bought this router and have been satisfied with both. With the savings of not leasing from my ISP, both units will be paid off within the course of my service contract. Both units are better than anything the ISP offered to lease. This router easily found the modem and was easy to set up.
