Short answer, it's lousy. White keys, with white LED lighting means that when the lighting is turned on you can't really even see the keys. To make matters worse, the light leaking from the front of each key is actually brighter then the light shining through, making it even harder to see the actual character on the key. The keys actually sit a fraction of a mm above the base, so there is constant light leak. That said, the keyboard is fully readable with the lighting disabled (Even in a pitch black room). The light from the monitor, combined with the black lettering/silver keys gives you plenty of illumination and contrast to easily use the keyboard with the lighting turned off.. They keyboard itself is also fantastic too use. I personally prefer to type on an MX Brown mechanical switch and normally hate chiclet styled keyboards. This one isn't bad though. The travel is good, with a satisfying (Non-audible) click and very little mushiness. I have almost exclusively purchased ThinkPad laptops in the past because the feel of a keyboard is very important to me and very few manufacturers have come close to what ThinkPads offer. This laptops comes very close, and is great for both typing and gaming. I just turn the keyboard lighting off.
