It can be up to 40 GB. Obviously, because 8 GB is soldered onto the board, you can only upgrade the second slot. Instead of the 8 GB there, you can swap in a stick of 32 GB memory at the same speed and expect 40 GB ram in single channel memory mode. Some websites that say that you can get up to 48 GB of combined memory are referring to the 32 GB variant, in which 16 GB is soldered onto the board. You can then add another 32 which makes for 48.
